    This dude is a solid dude IRL. Bouncers were being a bunch of meathead d*cks to my buddy at one of their shows and he settled the situation. Good man

    I like his approach on playing, people sometimes think they “need” pedals or extra stuff to sound better but they really don’t. Steve’s a cool dude

      But his pedalboard is definitely a necessary part of shaping his tone. The exact function of his pedalboard is to make the songs sound better. I think what he is getting at when discussing how he learns to play clean before adding pedals is that you can't use pedals to make up for not playing your guitar well. Also, the guitar, amp, pedals, preamp etc... are not the only things that shape the tone. The way someone plays is a huge component of the final outcome. He is saying that one should learn to play well first. Only then should you create the tone that you want with pedals.

    One of my favorite players out there today. His chord voicings are always imaginative.

    • @pedromaiz88
      @pedromaiz88 Před 4 lety +4

      You know, the guys from PUP used to play in a ska band long ago. Many of those chord voicings remind me of ska songs. For example, imagine Steve's parts during the verse in DVP. Now imagine the same chord voicings being played using upstrokes on the upbeat. 23 years ago, during the 3rd wave/ american ska revival, that would have been one hell of a song.

      @@elliotskunk I don't have a source I can link you to, sorry; but this is something they mentioned (while playing ska beats) when I saw them live a couple years back, so I can vouch for it.

    Saw a band called "Max" at the legendary Horshoe Tavern years ago, its Dave Monks of Tokyo Police club and some other members too, I think, but I forget, anyways...I didn't know Pup as well then but I had seen them play recently too. I was sitting next to Steve at the bar pretty much all night and I was like I think that's Pup's guitar player but I wasn't sure, was able to confirm when I got back home.
    Side note about Horshe Tavern, its referenced in Bobycageon by The Tragically Hip, when Gord sings "that night in Toronto, with its checkerboard floors" he's referring to the black and white tiling at the Horshoe Tavern.

      It’s Polish i think, so it probably is supposed to be pronounced that way, but the way he said it is probably easier for normal people to pronounce or spell. People butcher it too much

    how does one buy 39,000 worth of stuff to sound so cool

    • @pedromaiz88
      @pedromaiz88 Před 4 lety +2

      you don't. Buy a kemper profiling amp for $1600. Then, learn how to use a soldering iron. Find schematics for all of your favorite pedals, order some PCBs and electrical components online, and... bam. You now have every single guitar rig you could ever dream of (minus the guitars). However, this may not make you sound cool. You gotta learn how to play first, bruh.
