As for the weather, Brits might feel very much at home in Hamburg.

The Times once called Hamburg the most British city outside Great Britain. And it's true: Same weather, same stiff upper lip, same humbleness (especially rich people don't boast here like in other places), same dry humour. Many roofs in the city centre are made from copper, therefore they are green and give the city a unique look from above (climb up the stairs of St. Michael's church - Michel - to have a look!). Most people come here for the harbour or to see a musical as we have several of those. Or of course for a football match. HSV fans are more upper/ middle class and fancy, St Pauli fans are real people from lower middle/ working class. You don't have to take a tourist ferry, the ferries of public transport in the habour go all year round and can be taken with the same ticket as for buses and the tube. You don't get explanations, but a hairful of wind and a noseful of saltwater - worth it! Free seagull droppings on top of it! The concert hall Elbphilharmonie has an observation platform with a great view (for free), the storage buildings of Speicherstadt make great photos, the parks, gardens and even the world's biggest cemetery Ohlsdorf are great places for a stroll in nature. There are canals you can discover by rental rowing boat. The observatory or loads of museums (of spices, of coffee, of Hamburg history, of police history etc.) are great visits for rainy weather. Or go to see a show in one of the three English theatres which call Hamburg their home (one professional, two amateurs - and honestly, The Hamburg Players are the best and yes, I am a member, hehe). In Hamburg you can visit a castle (Bergedorf), the DESY (German electron-synchrotron, sounds complicated, but is fantastic for science fans), walk amongst apple blossoms in the "countryside" amongst old farm houses in Altes Land, go shopping in high class shops, go shopping in alternative shops, go shopping at 5am on the Fish Market on Sundays or get shaken thoroughly in thrilling rides during the DOM (our fairground that pops up three times a year). Hamburg simply has it all!

Good grief, Whats with the town hall? We have niceish churches, we have a beautiful concert hall in the harbour. And the Alster, a river dammed into an artificial lake in the middle ages. It is tree lined, has ducks and swans and sailboats and in more than 60 years of living in the city the beauty of the inner and outer Alster lakes has never failed to move me. There is a nice botanical garden (Planten un Blomen) in the city centre. Altona is the quirkiest quarter, but the Schanze and St. Pauli (thats where the football club gets its name) are good for nightlife and cafés. The more extensive damage was east of the outer Alster (Aussenalster), so in the west there are Eppendorf and Harvestehude with many streets full of late 19th/early 20th century areas with small boutique style shopping and lots of restaurants. There are so many canals off the Alster where you can paddleboard or row in summer. There certainly is no reason to like Hamburg just because you can go somewhere else. The town hall may be one of Hamburgs least noteworthy attractions. Remember to book you Miniaturwunderlandticket in advance!

My personal "must see" in my hometown Hamburg is the "Elbstrand Övelgonne" on a warm summer night. Imagine a beach on one side of the river Elbe and the harbour on the other. Sitting in the sand, sipping a beer and watching huge cruising ships so close is absolutely priceless.

Honestly, I've learnt not to complain about rain anymore. With now 4 or so consecutive years of record drought, I'm thankful for every bit of rain we get. Like right now, actually.

I think the best things about Hamburg are how beautiful a lot of residential areas are, how lovely the green spaces are and how non-judgemental people tend to be.

Hamburg has a lot of modern sights, but also very old buildings. In Hamburg it is a lot about the quarters. Just check Schanzenviertel or Altona... and then e.g. on the other hand Blankenese or Hafen City. So, Hamburg is very diverse, not just modern looking.

Reeperbahn is more mixed than the red light district in Amsterdam. Lots of bars, clubs and discothecs, concerts, normal people. Went there a lot as a student 18+ or at least make it look like .. The big musical theater and two or three smaller theaters are there as well.

There's a saying, that people in Hamburg open their umbrellas when there's rain in London. It's true, we are Germany's gate to the world and there's a close historical connection to the UK.

A few addresses to see old and impressive or romantic buildings in Hamburg are the Speicherstadt (where the miniature wonderland and the Wasserschloss coffee house is), the nearby Deichstraße and Reimerstwiete, the small alleyway Kramer Amtsstuben (shown in the video) next to St. Michaelis church, the Peterstraße which houses the Johannes Brahms museum and the Lower German library (There's a backyard just around the corner which gives you an additional great view on the half timbered houses), Bäckerbreitengang (just some really old worker homes) and a few really old churches like St. Johannis in Eppendorf and the Alt-Rahlstedt church in Rahlstedt (both were founded somewhere in the 12th century).

Hamburg is also known as Germany's musical city; here is one of the largest Airbus factories ever, has the 3 largest port in Europe and is simply a world metropolis.

For me, the best thing about Hamburg is the "Logo". It's a tiny music club where many famous bands have performed. 🎸 It is also called the loudest sauna in the city because it has no air conditioning. 🥵Hamburg is one of the cities in Germany with the most active music scene. It is not for nothing that already in the 60s the Beatles play there.

Nobody mentions the Miniaturwunderland? That's Hamburg, too, and it's a sight worth seeing a whole day at least :)

Lived at the Reeperbahn for 15 years. And actually, it is one of the most sought-after districts with a high cultural and quality of life :-) The district also looks very different during the day and at night. In the summer it mostly feels like a chilled open-air festival vibe. I assume it also feels kind of extreme to some people, but you really get used to it quickly. And after that, most other places tend to feel boring ;-) There is also always a very international vibe. It is near many attractions of the inner city.

Greetings from Hamburg! I'm born in Hamburg, grew up in Hamburg and will probably die one day in Hamburg. I really love my open minded hometown (also the nightlfe at Reeperbahn, there are lots of clubs and concerts, so its not all about strippers and a place a usual woman goes to to party all night).
