IS HIKING A GOOD WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT?

  • It’s more important to be healthy. However, I have dislocated my knee 5 times now so carrying around extra weight is just painful and dangerous just for my knee alone. So yes I want to continue to lose weight. Not trying to offend anyone who is body positive.

    Great editing and really quality vlog. The insert cuts of the PCT, Canada, and Germany provided great visuals and fully supported your talking points. Your new wife and family must to thrilled to see these videos too. The biggest loss for you seems to not just be physical but your mind seems so clear now too. The Colonel.

    This was a tough one to watch. I have to gain weight. Lost 37 lbs (5'7") down to 92lbs. Cancer. Have a raging appetite and the weight gain is stubborn. You're doing great Cory. High Five to you. May I remind you and your fans to get a colonoscopy! Cancer Sucks.

    I am so happy about the changes you've made in the past few years. I lose weight when I hike as long as I don't go crazy with the food afterwards. People on the trail are so awesome 😊 🤗

    You've done something really relevant, in my opinion: you're living proof that one can live a life with adventures independent of one's weight. You've done hikes, swims, traveling, romance, exotic places, etc. You're living love, nature, different cultures...
    That's the beautiful message, I think: don't wait to live. You can do everything you want right now, before losing weight.
    It's disheartening to see family and friends who postpone things in their lives for when they lose the weight. But that day never comes. And they keep struggling, suffering, feeling frustrated... as if there was something wrong with them. There's nothing wrong with them right now.
    I'm happy for you and everytime I see you doing something nice, I feel like showing the video to people who are waiting to lose weight first, before living things they wish to do.
    As for hiking, I think what helps one lose weight is changing their relationship with food. Who has the time to hike enough to lose as many calories as they consume? It's changing what you eat and the amounts you eat that count. But that's so difficult to do. Is it worth? Perhaps it is easier to learn to love oneself with the extra weight.
    Some people have weight related illness. But many are fine, weight and all.
    The problem is that if one is heavy and has a health problem, everybody will think it's because of the extra weight. Perhaps it isn't.
    Edit: please, listen to the Maintenance phase podcast with Audrey Gordon and Michael Hobbes. Mainly if you're feeling unhappy with your weight. It makes you think about prejudice, about discrimination... it is funny and super well made.

    YOU sir were my inspiration and when I saw you hiking the PCT, I thought to myself, Hmm, can I go on hikes too? So I started in 2019, joined the Hiker Babes 100 Hike challenge, completed that, and then as you know, just walked the Camino. So...while I may not have lost a bunch of weight once I started hiking, my body changed, my mind changed, and both got a lot stronger. Thank you for posting your journey in the beginning and for inspiring so many people to get out there! And I feel like because of you and others, certain outdoor industries have woken up to include plus sizes in their clothing options. THAT is a story that should be written!!

    You look so more healthy now than in your first videos, weight aside.
    Stronger, happier, fresh skin, more active, more psychologically stable.
    This just from how you look and act in your videos.
    I never had problems with my weight, but a few fairly long thru-hikes (but not nearly as long as PCT) have made me stronger mentally, more goal-oriented which in turn have made me able to be much less self-destructive in nearly all areas in life.

    Bicycling has been my thing... weight loss, rehab from an auto collision, mindfulness... and adventuring! Hiking is a smaller but important part of this effort as I need to exercise different parts of my legs and body that cycling doesn't touch. Keep up the journey Cory. I'm rooting for you! Come hike the Catskills with me some time!
    P.S. I've been watching since Dixie gave you a shout out. It's been inspiring!

      Definitely add some other stuff and especially some kind of stretching, I neglected doing that and after 5 years of cycling I caused the muscles in my calves and hams to shorten and I'm way stronger but significantly less flexible!

      @@bunnosaurusaussie For sure you have to mix it up and stretch. I've got 70,000+ miles of cycling behind me and it's probably over 100,000. Cycling was freedom as a kid as my playmate/ next door neighbor was .2 miles up the road and other kids were further. As I've aged it takes longer to warm up and stretching has become more important. Getting rid of my road racing bicycles in the mid-80s was the best thing I did. Non-competitive long distance touring, mountain biking, and cycling country roads proved to be much more satisfying than always pushing for speed and trying not collide with other riders!

    Hiking helped me lose weight. It also opened a gate way for trail running. I'm getting ready to start over. The last 2 years I gained 30lbs due to health issues. Great video Cory. You look happy!

    Great video, Cory! I shared with you the fact that I am a recovered anorexic/bulimic from 40 years ago (I am 59 years old today). In my personal opinion, anyone who has an unhealthy relationship with food shares the same challenges. So I can totally empathize with your challenges. The thing that helped me turn the corner, was getting into exercise at the age of 23 (back then I was a runner). I have had to modify my physical activities as I age, because of injuries, but the key is to keep moving. I used to be a hard cord rock climber for 23 years and it was all I ever did. I was SO fit when I was a climber and it was the best time of my life. I honestly miss it a lot, but I ruined my feet and had to move on. That's when I came up with a strategy to keep moving. I still do shorter hikes, while being mindful about my foot condition, but I also took up mountain biking about 4 years ago after a long sabbatical (and dust collecting on my bike). Part of being active and getting fit is to learn new behaviors about how you approach food, which does take time and it's an ongoing process for all of us. I believe mental fitness and physical fitness are intertwined, so getting outside on a walk, or a hike, or a bike ride is very critical in the entire process. Like you said, getting out in the sunshine helps with Vitamin D. Personally, when getting outside, I like to call it "Nature Therapy." The other strategy that I use is that I do not buy foods that I know I won't be disciplines about. I won't buy a bag of cookies or a gallon of ice cream because I don't trust myself. LOL! But when I do a big mountain bike ride twice a week, I buy myself a candy bar afterward. That becomes my little treat that I know I have earned. By doing it that way, I don't feel the need to binge like I once did so many decades ago. But you know what? If I do binge once in awhile, I know I can get right back on track. Like you said, everything in moderation! Thanks for being you and letting me share my own experience and what works for me. Hugs, Darling!

    I've always enjoyed your content. I don't have a weightloss issue... I struggle in the other direction. I want to weigh 150'ish, but have been unable to get beyond 135, and that took a tremendous amount of planning, eating, and money. Not crying, just stating what my goal is.
    You inspire me to try harder at whatever goals I have. Thank you.

      Aww thank you!!! This reminds me when I was in the Marine Corps I weighed 170 and the navy neurologist told me to gain weight to 220 after DNA testing confirmed I had a rare nerve disorder. He was correct getting fatter improved my quality of life but I went beyond 220 so yikes lol. Finding that healthy balance is key.

    Ok. You asked for our experience also. I am 6 foot tall and 60 years old. Over past 20 years I have ranged 180 to 230 pounds and in general slowly creeping up. Currently down from 230 to 210 in past 12 months. Waistline, neck, height, weight calculators say I could be as low as 165 pounds including 20 pounds body fat, which is where I would like to get to especially at my age. It is hard.
    I enjoy sailing, kayaking, cross-country skiing, walking, hiking, and running - but am increasingly less capable of doing so as I get older.
    It’s not just physical. It’s mostly mental. A lot of it has to do with dopamine distractions like alcohol and the internet but I can’t blame that entirely.
    I think you idea of not being afraid of setting big goals, but allowing yourself to be very pleased with small incremental gains is very true. I have recently, past 8 months, followed a few videos by Dr. Andrew Huberman and understand dopamine and other neurotransmitters/neuromodulators much better now. It’s still hard.

    You know what? Good for you. Whatever works for you. Hiking is "exercise" and a lot of hiking is a lot of exercise, which if you expend more than what you take in (eat), you will lose weight. God bless. I see you are keeping "most" of it off, so that's good enough. Better than most.

    Yes not for all but for sure for some people hiking is a good way to loose weight. Or to loose whatever other addiction or bad habits you want to loose.
    Hiking brings you away from bad places, bad routines, and bad habits (bad not meant absolutely but in a sense of not good for you), and brings you automatically to new perspectives, new impressions, new friends and new influences, and all that is important if you really want to change yourself.
    Yet hiking being a good method for some it might not be the best method for you personally, especially if you have certain health challenges like arthritis or certain joint or spine problems. But never mind, even if it is maybe not the best method it might still help, and you are the living proof that even with huge health problems hiking is working, anyhow.
    And not to forget: there are plenty of alternatives which have similar effects, as for example travelling to and living at strange places far off from anything, staying for a while in a monastery, working some while on an alpine pasture, crossing the oceans alone on a small boat, finding a new love abroad, starting a life in a totally new place and culture, and so on.
    I guess we can walk and hike and go whereever and how long ever we want, we will always carry ourselves with us. But the way and the places and all these struggles and influences change us over the time, and often these changes help us to become somebody we really like to be. And sometimes we might even notice that we aren't stable like a rock but much more fluid and changing like a river, and that if we come into the right flow, nothing is impossible, but everything is possible. ;-)
    You are a great example how this happens and since you documented your travel and struggles you did us all a great favour - we all became witnesses how that works - and that it works.
    And since you are already and very obviously in the right flow, I'm totally positive that for you nothing is impossible. You will surely loose even more weight and win even more wisdom and happiness, and that's for sure a good deal ;-)

    So glad I found your channel. I've struggled with weight all my life. Have lost 125lb over the past few years. Still would like to drop another 90lb. I have been thinking of taking up Backpacking. Of course there are many fears. Can my body take it. What kind of gear would help...I have bad back and knees, so I need to consider boots, walking stick. Going through a lot of your other vids.

    It hasn't had that effect on me. I started at age 21 and 200 lbs., and I still hike now that I'm 57 years old and 310 lbs. It's great fun, and I have very strong legs, and I'm in fairly good cardiovascular condition, but, no, it did not take off any weight.

    Insulin resistance is number ONE! Ben Bikman talks about getting glucagon up, it's chronically low for some people. It's not the calories but the hormones. It's not about "willpower" either...

      If you stop eating you will lose weight, period. The human body doesn't need to eat to survive long periods. At 400 pounds you can go a year plus without eating as long as you stay hydrated and take nutrients. Research Angus Barbieri. Our body's fat storages can be used as fuel. So yes, the amount of calories you consume matters a lot.

      ​@@wideopenthrottl Fasting is a way to do it, sure. Fasting reduces insulin thereby increasing glucagon. They are antagonists. One is the fat storage hormone, the other is the fat burning hormone. If insulin resistance isn’t addressed, glucagon remains low so the fat stores are never tapped into. The insulin is telling your body to store more. People can be stuck in that cycle for years. Increasing glucagon is the key.

    Or…. Get a cheap Planet Fitness membership and work out with weights and aerobic equipment 3-4 times a week. They are everywhere. I do this no matter where I travel, no matter what the weather and the only gear you need is a good pair of athletic shoes. Oh. and I eat anything I want. No diets, no fasting, no food restricting, no recording no calculating calories/exercise. And no weighing. I hike when I can -especially if a waterfall is involved. Works for me. I’m wearing jeans I couldn’t button 9 months ago.

    Alone it is not a good way, because with physial activity you dont burn much calories. To eat in a moderate way (dont starve yourself) an be happy is the right way. So if exercise makes you happy, do it.

      I can agree with this 😊❤️!!! It really helped me break addictions and helped with my depression. Also created a healthy heart rate. It created secondary conditions that made me more healthy.

    It is a great way to exercise... But it only accounts for 10% of weight loss. A calorie a calorie. You can't outrun a bad diet, real weight loss happens in the kitchen.

    Hey Cory, followed you from PCT day 1. You might want to reach out to Gary Jenkin whose CZcams channel is "Too Heavy To Hike" as he attempts to do the Appalachian Trail this year. Very similar story to yours and you can provide perspective that few can.

    I got way too thin on the pct and had to find ways to eat more. Sugary things like bars even tho high calories I got sick of quickly, Classic hiker fare are tortillas and nutbutters, but it wasn't filling enough It helped to carry english muffins instead.They hold together. I can say weight on either end is an issue. I came so close to having to leave the trail because I couldn't keep weight on. The metabolism I think speeds way up and maybe that's why the weight comes off?

    Hiking takes the weight off but you still have to watch what you eat to make sure the fuel you’re taking in is good for you. Too many hikers surviving on bars and pop-tarts for a percentage of their calories.

      Just saw this, thank you! Last I knew Bee is in Germany. we fought a lot. It was a good lesson for me to learn in life. I have been traveling the world and married almost two years to Onuma. It’s been like a dream married to her. Its so weird how in sync we are. so maybe it is a dream lol. We have been feeding lots of hungry people: ophans, victims of Myanmar civil war and just woke up at 5am to drop food off for children monks. So trying to make the world a better place. My sons have their passports and home schooled. All four of us can fly around the world for free so trying to live my best life. I got burnt of all the negativity online so don’t feel like making videos anymore, however living my best life. I hope you are living your best life. Take care. ❤️
