- West Coast is a truly remarkable guitar piece. Many CZcams videos show students & guitar teachers completely missing its stylish secrets; (many miss the dynamics & phrasing too!). Bar 20 is played wrongly by most CZcamsrs - the 3rd string "E" is 4 beats, not 2!

Secrets? No. 1 - watch my left hand "2" finger - it never leaves the 3rd string...
Secrets? No. 2 - when the first LH finger plays, it's on the same fret as the "2" (on a lower note), or one fret lower (on a higher note). The 3rd LH finger is on the same fret as the 2. In virtually all bars, only two fingers are down at any one time.
Secrets? No. 3 - in the body of the piece, the B string is played open all the time - an inverted pedal. It will overpower the arpeggios if care isn't taken; that's why I've emphasised the top string part (using apoyando) to give a lovely off-beat melody.

I teach classical guitar full-time; I love pieces like this - easy to play, yet tantalisingly full of music that many people overlook in rushing to play the notes. I enjoy teaching my students the magic that so many players miss.

Thank you - you make it come alive :-)
Lovely guitar composition and fine tone playing!
(Thoughtful of you to explain the 'magical secret' too!)
Thanks for this Derek,

Thanks a lot sir :)
Well done! I love simple and neat sounding songs like this. Does anyone have any recommendations for songs to learn that are similar to this?
