Union Monsters - Failed Cards and Mechanics in YuGiOh

  • Union monsters are pretty unique as a failed card mechanic, because they actually had a very competitive deck that was entirely comprised of union monsters. Although that was more, despite, the fact that they were unions, and not really because of how strong union effects could be.

    So many times.... they created monsters that are basically Union monsters, but aren't.
    They just seemingly chose to forget they existed, and didn't really do much to help make them better.... if Kaiba didn't use the XYZ monsters, you can bet they wouldn't have gotten the support they did get, and I am confident in that as the support they did get is both attribute and type locked, so it only applied to the ones Kaiba used (and I guess Chazz as well, since he also used the XYZ monsters).

    • @matthewkuscienko4616
      @matthewkuscienko4616 Před 2 lety +19

      The reason why they kept printing new monsters that could equip themselves that weren't unions is because union monsters usually needed to be summoned before they could equip to a monster you controlled, which always made them kinda clunky to play without extra support to make it easier to get then into play. It's not so much that they forgot about union monsters as it is that they eventually realized that the way they designed the cards made them a bit too difficult to effectively play, since they couldn't equip themselves while in the hand like other monsters that can equip themselves tend to be able to do. I will acknowledge that it's probably true that Kaiba and Chazz both playing union monsters helped to keep the mechanic kinda relevant, but at the same time, it seems to have kind of pigeonholed then into designing them as machine type monsters

      Armory arm stands out as it say a lot of play during early 5ds and was basically an extra deck union monster. One of the dumbest mistakes that they ever made with the OG Unions is that they did not make X-head cannon a union. If it was, it would actually be worth tying to play in the ABCs to try and summon out that ABCXYZ monster that's pretty damn good.

    • @13KuriMaster
      @13KuriMaster Před 2 lety +23

      @@matthewkuscienko4616 There is by no means a requirement for the common traits of Union monsters to be continued for newer support. They could have easily made Union monsters that can equip themselves from the hand for those archetypes.
      For example: Look at toon monsters, the first bunch required Toon World to be summoned, and couldn't attack on the first turn, and self-destructed if Toon World was destroyed. Then they released Toon Dark Magician Girl, who can attack the turn she is summoned... and then came other Toon monsters like Gemini Elf or Goblin Attack force that don't require Toon World to be summoned (only requiring it for direct attacks), and then came Toon monsters like Cyber dragon that don't self destruct when Toon World is destroyed.
      They could have just made the cards be a new-wave set of Union monsters that don't need to be on the field to equip to a monster..... much like how they made Union monsters that aren't limited to only equipping to monsters of a specific name.

      @@13KuriMaster I'm well aware of that. My point was to try to illustrate why union monsters had been by and large a flop in the past, and why they have largely fallen out of favor in lieu of other cards that do similar things, just better. I acknowledge that there could be changes made to allow union monsters to become better in the future, but the problem is that they are already making those changes for other cards, which would kind of make giving these benefits to union monsters as well redundant without having a way to specifically capitalize on the distinction of them being union cards rather than just generic monsters that can equip themselves to other monsters

    One of my favourite simple changes for Union monsters (aside from equipping from places other than the field) is making the equip/unequip dual effect a Quick Effect so they can dodge destruction and potentially targeting while either a monster or equip card - as well as meaning you could unequip and re-equip them during turn phases aside from the Main Phase.

    While it wasn't competitively used the way it was meant to, "Union Carrier" was also a good Union support card, allowing you to equip Unions (or anything) from your deck. In theory, with the way it worked, it could have allowed for mixing and matching the older Unions that had specific targets. Wish it hadn't been abused to the point of being banned

    Union Monsters, a bitter sweet memory from my childhood something I always loved but has been left abandoned by Konami.
    Always liked the original spirit of the Monsters where it was like 2 seperate monsters that worked together to be stronger then they were individually. Though they kind of lost that spirit eventually when Konami started pumping out all the machine type Unions, machines designed to combine together just don't have the same teamwork feel to them as something like Dark Blade and his dragons or Burning Beast and Freezing Beast.
    In my youthfulness I even used to daydream about a Yugioh series where the main character used a Union deck because of that same teamwork spirit which would have worked back in the day. These days though I look back on that idea while I still like tge idea of a ygo mc that uses Unions I have to accept that with how yugioh is these there isn't enough plot armor in the world to justify even a ygo MC winning with a dedicated Union deck.
    I still hold a naive hope that someday we might see a new wave of improved Union Monsters that recapture that feeling or maybe retrains of the OG Union Monsters but it's something I hope for but don't think will ever really happen.
    Kind of like my hopes that my old friend Tri-horned Dragon will someday get some attention. (Poor Guy was once one of the strongest Monsters in the game but now so forgotten.)

    if i were to change union monsters, i woud release a new set of union monsters where they do 3 things:
    1) search a specific monster that can specai summon itself if you control the union monster. if you normal summon specific card it equips the union from the deck or hand to it.
    2) you can equip union monsters from the hand or field to the specific monster
    3) additional effects beyond "i am your shield" such as drawing a card, buffs to attack or defense, giving piecing damage, or preventing your opponent from targetting or giving blanket protection from opponent's card effects.
    you can effectivly make a powerful union archtype around this and still not be overpowered compared to what other decks do. Even with link monsters and xyz monsters, this would not break union monsters. You can even create generic union support within the new union support. a field spell that lets you pop a card when a union is equiped but also searches out any union for a small fee of 800 a turn. You can create union boss monsters akin to large xyz where "if this card is summoned from the extra deck, equip x number of union monsters to this card equal to its xyz materials." or something. like there is a wy to make union great, but i think konami is scared

Some examples are Dragunity Remus, Dragunity Knight Romulus, Dragon Ravine and two who i think are some of the best. Those being Dragunity Knight Gae Dearg and a level 6 Dragunity Arma.
    also heres a strategy i use in this deck :
    I use Remus to get Dragon Ravine from my deck and activate it (if you already have Dragon Ravine in your hand, then you don't have to). I send Dragunity Couse in the GY. Then i normal summon any level 4 dragunity monster and tribute it to special summon Level 6 Arma. I then use his effect to equip Couse to him from the GY which he'll then summon him and then go into Aredbhuir or Ascalon (Couse becomes Level 4 if he's used for a Synchro of a Dragunity monster so you can't go for other level 10 synchros by using his effect).
    It's like a archetypal version of Dino Rabbit and it's always fun to summon.

    - Gives them an effect that allows them to equip themselves from graveyard to one monster on the field. (Same as equid Infernoble noble knight by simply discard them for activated effect)
    - Gives them some specific effect equip or unequip per turn. ***Technically allows them to equip and unequip during the same turn once each.
