The Peter Pan Problem

- This was said to be one of the biggest mistakes WED made when creating Peter Pan’s Flight 🙈
Though the Fantasyland dark rides were a hit from the beginning of Disneyland in 1955, they realized immediately that they didn’t have enough capacity. It wasn’t until the 1964 New York World’s Fair (and the prodding of Nunis, aka “Hop-a-long Capacity”) that Disney finally found methods for moving more people through an attraction per hour.
But even with many upgrades in the 1983 Fantasyland remodel, Peter Pan’s flight in Disneyland (as well as the one in Walt Disney World) still suffers from extremely low capacity. That is why the line is always so long, because it’s a slow loading, low-capacity attraction. Some have said the wait is not worth it to a 2.25-3min ride (depending on the version you are on), but for many this attraction is a must-do in the Disney parks.
There’s a significance there, in the wait. We continue to join the queue, though this ride is one of the shortest rides in duration of all the Disney attractions. Maybe it’s because the idea that we don’t have to grow up is a hope we hold close, even for two and a half minutes at a time. Or maybe we all just want to be able to fly, even for a moment, away to our own Neverlands 💜
“We were talking about what things we could use for Fantasyland in some of the rides. And we kidded about Peter Pan. ‘We could do a Peter Pan fly-through.’ While Walt was gone, Bill made a little schematic birds-eye view of where you would go, and that became the ride.” - Richard Irvine

This ride is so popular I don’t know why Disney doesn’t make an other ride with the same ride system. Theme it to Mary Poppins. There are 2 dumbos, as well as Magic Carpet so two similar rides wouldn’t be a problem.
@@chrishubbard5073 that would be fun. An Up ride would work too. And personally I want a Monster's Inc door warehouse roller coaster esque ride.
I remember in 2011 that I waited only 10-5 minutes to get on a bunch of dark rides is fantasyland and space mountain in tomorrowland right before the fireworks and after the fireworks. Since at that time all the people not staying on property left and the parks didn’t have as many people.
The Paris park has this ride too, is there a difference in its capacity?
@@chrishubbard5073 omg a magic carpet ride would be AMAZING!
Peter Pan is a timeless Disney gem due to its story of retaining and keeping your inner child's imagination alive as you grow up.
I love Peter Pan 🥰
@@disneycicerone Peter Pan has always been my favorite Disney character.
The most important thing you can ever do.
@@Elliemaeggles Indeed. If any of us wants to maintain and have a happy life, we need to keep-hold of our childlike innocence, wonder and fun.

My husband proposed to me on this ride! He had us wait while they fixed the ride for over four hours, then he slipped a ring on my finger and whispered ‘think a wonderful thought’. It was so romantic, back in 1989 at Disneyland. OMGosh, haven’t thought of that in years.
So romantic! You are lucky to have gotten such a wonderful proposal 🤍
Omg that’s so cute!! So happy for you two🥹
The dedication!!
That's amazing ❤ I hope to find someone who loves me that much one day
I'm crying. That is so romantic ♡
That ride is weirdly one of the most memorable moments I have from all park visits I had as a child, even though I only rode it maybe once. I leaned over the edge and looked down, and I remember thinking "We're so high up! Wait, no we're not, but it looks like we are, so maybe we really are?" It's also a memory of my Mom and Dad having a good day together.
Peter Pan is simply a must-ride attraction at the Disney Parks.
💯 agree. It was Walt’s favorite ride 😊
I agree, I really love it , it’s magical .
I like the statement that attractions were viewed as temporary until something better came along. I feel like it's relevant to remember for today with all of the changes that go on through the parks all the time 😊
I will still hate it when matterhorn is eventually replaced with a frozen retheme
I doubt that will happen. They are pretty protective of Walt’s mountain, even making all the other mountains in the park sunk into the ground so they won’t be taller than it.
Yeah Walt never meant for it to be a museum, more like a living organism that changes and grows with time. I have no doubt he would have ripped many things out and replaced them several times over by now had he lived longer. He once said the storybookland canal boats was just a temporary little ride until they could get something better.
I keep reminding myself of that when I mourn Maelstrom but I will never forgive The Great Movie Ride being replaced with what, in my view, is a lack-luster ride (though it has a great story). It isn't a roller coaster unless it can go up and down inclines. And honestly, it was such a unique attraction that was replaced with a common attraction.
@@jillyapple1 I agree honestly. Runaway Railway isn't bad if course, but the uniqueness of The Great Movie Ride and the entertainment is the true spirit of Hollywood Studios. 😔
“We’ll still wait for our chance to fly” gave me chills❤it’s so true
🥰🥰
My sister and I use to watch Peter Pan the night before going to Disneyland when we were little. I vividly remember being about 7 or 8 sitting in a fort with my sister watching it as we ate some candy we got at Sanrio earlier that day. Those are some precious memories.
I am saddened for those who have never experienced that true Disney magic as a child, particularly on this ride, and at a short wait time to where one could ride again within the hour. I was blessed with so many magical years. Thanks Grandparents, Parents, Walt, and all those who designed and built Disneyland.
The problem here is greed. They could allow less people in, and instead have witing lists for the tickets. Then people would complain about the tickets not being available.
Or they could just raise ticket prices to compensate, as they are already doing with "express passes".
It’s my favorite ride. It’s the most detailed and you can tell so much love went into it
It's one of my all time favourite rides as a kid and now, still is. 63 and I still go on that ride every time I visit Disneyland.
Love that 😊 it’s a must-do for me
I love hearing that.
Same for me, I just turned 76, My first visit was 1958 =:-O
I’m nearing 50 and I STILL remember my first time on Peter Pan. 🥰
I’ve forgotten most of my childhood, but I’ve never lost the moment I looked down at london so far away and truly believed.
@@nightvalebunny137 Right???
The first year Disney World was opened I got to go. To ride each ride you had to pay a certain number of tickets, but we didn't have enough money to buy a lot of them, so I savored each moment on the rides, thoroughly captivated. On the Peter Pan ride, the ship was a wonder and I didn't mind at all when it paused at the scene where Capt. Hook balanced atop the crocodile jaws. As Hook did splits, we waited. And waited. Our ship was at the top of the up and down cycle. Finally, someone came with a ladder and helped us down. As we walked through the rest of the ride and exited, we were given a long, long string of tickets, maybe even more than we started the day with! Best Disney moment in my past 50 years!
I wish people wouldn't bring up the tickets, it might give the executives some ideas about where to nickle and dime people.
@@SmallSpoonBrigade They obviously make more money from people bying all day passes, and selling more passes than they can really accomodate.
You pay for a full day of queueing, and you might get 10 minutes of ride for your money.
Imagine if they guaranteed a maximum queue time of ten minutes at every ride? The would have to reduce the number of visitors significantly.
And then there is food, if you can ride instead of queue, they sell less food, You might just stay there for 3-4 hours until you fell done and then leave and eat somewhere else.
We waited for like 65-70 minutes in December for Peter Pan’s Flight and it was very much worth it. Always makes me overjoyed to ride it even as an adult
I finally got to ride it as an adult. It was almost time for the park to close for the day, and the line was not as long, about 40min.
The 'line ride' as I call it - the part of the line that begins to immerse you into the vibe of the experience was great!
Cmon everybody here we GO! Off to Neverland!
✨
I heard that in the exact voice as i read it. The story of Peter Pan has a special place in my heart, it was my favorite as a child. ♡ I hope they never take this ride away.
Second star to the right, and straight on 'till morning. Just like it felt all through the night at Disneyland until my mom and dad tucked me into the hotel bed. So blessed to have had that childhood. May so many more get to experience it!
I was a childless adult when I first went to WDW so I skipped Peter Pan. It wasn’t until my daughter was in her 20s that she told me we had to go on it. Now I hate to skip ii. It is magical to fly.
My favorite ride!
I went to Disney World with some family a couple years ago. Was in line for Peter Pan's flight with my cousins + their kids for hours because it began to storm really violently and iirc there was either a severe storm or hurricane warning. Luckily we were in the part of the line where it looks like the nursery and there's a lot of interactive things. My toddler cousin fell in love with Tinkerbell after bc we watched her fly around the nursery for so long lol
If they had made the ride longer, they could’ve accommodated more guests, and thus shortened the lines.
A cheat back in the day when I lived in So Cal, was to go on it during the parades when all the families who would otherwise be in line were distracted. Don’t know how well that works now though.
Not by much if there is any improvement, unfortunately. The ride itself is pretty slow, so the queue is still going to move pretty slowly due to how few people are still going to get on and off and at the rate that the ride moves
A longer ride would make line wait times worse. Ride length is independent of throughput. More seats per gondola/ship thing, or more gondolas would help. A longer ride with all else being equal would make the problem worse. The only thing that would change is retrospect feelings as to whether the ride was worth the wait.
Disneyland, CA, opened in 1955. I was 5. I finally got to ride "Peter Pan's Flight" 45 years later. Yes, we waited in line for it. 45 years plus a couple of hours. Worth it.
The Peter Pan queue is brutal: No shade, cramped, winding, boring, no storytelling, no distractions, ride frequently pauses due to loading/unloading trouble, lots of line-cutting, and torture for fidgety little ones (and their parents) to endure. Love the ride but I won’t attempt it if the wait is more than 30min, and that’s still crazy lopsided when comparing ride vs wait. Monsters Inc. has nearly the exact same issues.
I agree. The wait is better in WDW since the queue is so well-themed and mostly indoors.
What's crazy is that Monster Inc was always a walk on back in the day, 10 min at most. Genie Plus straight up destroyed that ride
That is why I will NEVER go to Disney. Between stuff like this and the prices of everything is ridiculous. I’d rather save the money
To 80s kids, the wait was just part of it. No fuss and a great ride at the end. We knew we were blessed just to be there. It saddens me how impatient and ungrateful people are, today.
Of all of the Dark Rides Peter Pan fascinated me the most, even as a kid. I loved, LoveD, LOVED the part of the ride that flew over London at night. I’ve always loved miniature cities and built my own in the backyard with freeways, flyover interchanges, lakes, and dams. Wasn’t there a futuristic miniature city over in Tomorrowland as well? Can’t recall what exhibit it was a part of though (Monsanto? 🤷🏻♂️)
I love Peter Pan but the queue in Disney world is crazy
It is in Disneyland as well. And Paris. It’s a lovely ride that has always had a problem with capacity 🥺
The ride really limits the size of the ride vehicle, so it’s a low capacity ride, even with a double rows. You have to be able to look over the side.
The only fix would be to have multiple tracks (multiple rode buildings) or speed up the ride.
I have a signed picture by Kathryn Beaumont who played Wendy in Peter Pan as well as Alice in Alice in Wonderland!
Growing up in Anaheim I was able to go everyday and Peter Pan will always be my fav right next to the haunted mansion
Ditto!!
I’m sad thinking that Disney will probably never be as accessible as it once was… it’s so expensive now and the line systems are crazy
As a kid I have such fond memories, but as an adult it just feels so impossible for me to go!
I too grew up in Anaheim and we kids were there every weekend. Great times .
Must be nice to afford to go everyday. Some people can’t afford to even go once
@@jaimemarston6200 it wasn’t cheap but the prices weren’t anything like they are now
It's worth every minute of waiting
Agreed
Nah, it isn't worth over an hour. A 20 minutes def worth it, but more than 40 minutes not really. There are better ones I've been in with shorter lines.
Nah it was my favorite ride as a child and my kids now so for us it's not a trip to Disneyland without ppf just gotta know the secrets and when to go I've never waited an hour but would if we where running out of time
I have only been to disneyland once, and it was when I was very little. I've always said that my only memory from that day is the Peter Pan ride❤
I've got a photo somewhere of my Dad and me on the Peter Pan flight dating from the late 1950s :-) [Not sure exactly when, as we went to Disneyland every year from its opening, but has to be prior to 1959]
This was my favorite and most memorable ride at Disney! I grew up absolutely obsessed with Peter Pan, would definitely still wait in hours long lines for it today
Peter pan ride in Disneyland Paris is, by far, the best ride of the park. At least in my opinion. The moment the ship goes in the stars is so magical 😍😍
I love that part too! They also have that in the Anaheim version.
I honestly cannot remember ever seeing this ride. I would have LOVED it 🥰
One of my favorite movie grown up as a kid I hope if I ever end up going to Disneyland they still have that ride✌🏼
I think that the queue in Disney world is a good one. Though you might have a long wait, there are things to see and interact with due to pixie dust in the nursery.
When my girlfriend (now wife) and I went to Disney World, Peter Pan's Flight experienced some kind of malfunction while we were waiting in line, which added about an hour and a half to the wait-time. On the upside, we were in the air conditioning the whole time, which was a good break from the July heat and humidity outside.
There was a bar at one time where all the construction and early crew of Disney (Florida). Old plans, old costumes and personal tributes. It was my favorite bar for many years. When the area developed so much we saw it bulldozed in the early 2000 maybe 04-06. I found the bar in the 80s and it was hopping. New areas were being developed and their stories of how things were designed and built was always fascinating. I’m of the age now where I realize how losing the old story tellers makes us lose our history. Thanks for what you do to keep the dream alive.
This was one of my favorite rides at Disney when I was a kid. Its one of my favorite memories from my childhood, ill never forget it.
I commented in one of your previous sorts about how I’ve only been to Disneyland once when I was 7 in the late 90’s and let me tell you, I still vividly remember this ride. It captured my imagination like little else has.
Still one of my favorite rides, this and storybook canal I can go on over and over again! No matter how long the wait!
It's our family first must ride every disneyland we go to. But we have been very lucky, its never a long wait when we go.
Not gonna lie i still remember riding this as a child with my Nana to this day. Its one of my fondest memories that i look back on now that she has passed. I remember feeling such wonder and even now thinking about it and thinking of the wonderful time i had with my family, but especially my Nana, i cant help but feel such a nostalic joy. One of the clearest memoreis my mind can counjur.
I miss you Nana
As a lifelong Peter Pan fan, this ride has been a MUST DO every time I’ve been there. I loved it even as an adult.
It’s so worth the wait, truly a magical ride❤
I’ve been going on Peter Pan’s flight since I was old enough to remember it. There’s something so magical about flying around Neverland in a pirate ship, and the stories I have about it make it all the more precious. When I was maybe four, the ride stopped, and I was absolutely *terrified* that the animatronics would attack me, and every time my mom tried to talk, I would shush her, because she was going to wake them up!
And because I have that memory, the ride means that much more to me
"Come on everybody! Here we go"! on repeat as you wait in the long line.
The only time I went to Disney World was during a work outing when the company running the event rented the park. We got to go on the rides with no wait. Honestly, that’s the only way I would visit. Waiting in line sounds like a nightmare.
Flight blew my mind as a kid.
Still my favorite ride at Disney even after several decades
There is a section of the 134 freeway near Pasadena that< If you are traveling west on the 134 and look down to the left [Eagle Rock] at night. It always reminds me of the Peter Pan ride!
That Peter Pan ride terrified me as a kid cuz I really felt like I was a couple hundred feet off the ground, insane level of creativity
Yeah, it's been 20 years since we went to Disneyland, but this was oddly my favorite ride! 😂 I was enchanted through the whole thing and can still remember all of it.
This was a favorite memory if mine from childhood. My parents took me and my siblings to Disney world when we were kids. My sister loved Peter Pan and really wanted to ride this ride. We waited two hours in line for this dang ride. It was cool and different but the ride was so short that we all complained it wasn't worth it in the end but we still laugh and joke about it.
This is always been our families favorite ride no matter how old we get. We try to go straight to that ride the second we get into the park. First ride of the day.❤
The surprise Nixon cameo is a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.
He loved Disneyland, even got a key to it in 1955. His family dedicated the monorail.
I went to Disneyland in the 60's with family. Today, at 66 years of age, I still remember the part of the ride where it seems you are flying over London. One of the most magical memories I have, over 50 years later!
I’ve only been to Disneyland twice, the first time almost 50 years ago, and the Peter Pan ride was my favorite.
It’s a lovely ride!
I hope they never change or close this sweet and classic ride, is such a heart warming ride, I want to ride it with my future children, is so simple yet so magical, I want them to experience that wonderful magical flying experience. This ride will always have a special place in ky childhood
I agree, me too 😊
Oh my goodness! I went to Disney World when I was 5 and I don’t remember it. But, when I saw this it triggered a memory I never knew I had! I remember riding this and being so happy with my dad and my stepmom( she passed from cancer in2013). So grateful to have another happy memory of her! I miss her so much❤❤
My dad waited with me to go on that ride ten times in a row when I was little… one of my favorite memories
First time I ever went to Disney, back in the 80s, this Peter Pan ride was almost empty so I went on it. I was maybe 11, and I LOVED this ride so much, I kept going on it about ten times. Flying above the town and through the bedroom was so much fun!
It’s a lovely ride 🥰
Im a 57 y.o. man . I was about 12 when I went on this ride. It definitely was one of the most memorable. Also, the hotel (forget its name) off the monorail. It was a Hawaiian tiki themed hotel.
I remember going on that ride when I was like 7 or 8 years old. That’s one of the only things I remember from my trip there.
This ride is one of my earliest childhood memories when I was 4. I couldn't find the tracks under the ship and couldn't figure out how the ride worked and it made it feel like real magic to me. 🥰
(I also got lost in the Swiss Family Robinson treehouse because I had seen that movie so many times and couldn't believe that it was real or that I was actually there. My Dad let go of my hand for a moment and I wandered off to inspect things! I don't remember being lost, but I do remember the awe and joy of seeing the treehouse!)
Disney World at 4 really was so magical.
Peter Pan's Flight is definitely one of the attractions I've experienced at Walt Disney World.
Thank you for sharing. I live here my whole life and didn't know. Thank you. I don't think I would have ever seen this.
You’re welcome
Definitely in my top three favorite rides ❤️
I love Disney world as a kid and it e
Was the best ever for a kid so don't disect it leave it for kids
I love Peter Pan! I especially love studying the history of how it was created so I can appreciate it more. 😊
They did add some games on the app, with puzzles and things to scan while waiting in line to unlock physical stuff like a hidden tinkerbell. Idk if they kept it or added more, its been a while, but i do like that theyve added things to entertain during the line.
I love the old rides. Peter Pan’s Flight will always be good.
They did actually attempt to fix this in Disneyland. They sped up the ride tracks so they cut down the time of the ride by two-ish minutes. I think they started sending them closer together, but I might be wrong about that second bit.
It will always be one of the best Disney rides of all time. The only way to make the line faster is to change the engineering.
Yeah likely adding a stronger track with ships that hold more people.
I’ve been to Disney World several times over the years and Peter Pan’s Flight has always been the one ride that I go on every single time. I can’t express how much I love this ride. It’s gone through changes over the years but I still love it was much today as I did over 40 years ago. They’ve gotten rid of Mickey’s house, the original Snow White ride, and 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and it didn’t bother me but if Peter Pan’s Flight ever goes away I just don’t think I’d be able to ever go back.
I remember being really little and asking to go on the Peter Pan ride. When I was older I was disappointed with it because of the wait. But, he's still my favorite character.
Pan's Flight is my favorite ride. Magical
I NEVER miss a flight with Peter Pan. The ride itself being suspended is already cool enough, especially back from the 50s. The next is that the models and lights have progressively been better over the years as technology catches up. The theming is stunning.
My favorite ride of all time. I hope we always have it.
Walt Disney: I can’t change and update my movies after they are released.
George Lucas: Hold my lightsaber
Peter Pan is still one of the best rides
I so vividly remember being 8 years old and getting to the park so early there was no wait on this ride so I rode three times in a row with almost no wait time. I would have kept riding but the line was building up after my third ride and my family wanted to do something else, lol.
And awaayy we're back 😥 The ride is far too short in comparison to the wait time.
No argument here, it is one of the shortest rides in the park. But it’s a lovely ride 😊
I love old Disneyland rides they are true magic
Me too 🥰
@@disneycicerone for me it’s Snow White that ride is just breathtaking all the cars that went into crafting the ride is amazing
I rode it for the first time this year. It scared me a bit with the animatronics, but it was still pretty magical.
Peter Pan ride is my absolutely favorite ride in Fantasy Land and makes my top 5 rides in Disneyland... a lot of people must feel that way too cuz those lines are always a beast 😑
My wife and I went to France for our honeymoon. We went to the Paris Disneyland. We bought the fast pass and we were the only ones we saw all day that had them. We skipped every line except for the one snow white ride that it wasn't available on.
Likely because it’s really expensive there 😂 my fam of 5 couldn’t afford the premier pass when we went, but I’m glad you had that fun experience for your honeymoon! 😊
I love your Micky ears!!
Thanks!
If Walt Disney lived long enough to have access to CGI, we would have gotten Special Editions of the Disney classics.
Your last line is sooo cute. I love it
🥰🥰
When I was a kid in the late 90s, there was never lines for the Peter Pan ride. You would wait less than 10 minutes at Disneyland to get on it back then.
One of my favorite rides, although I have not been in maybe 40 years ❤
Still my favorite ride behind the haunted mansion 100%
Yes! Pirates might have a slight edge over it for me but it’s up there
I swear for years and years I rlly thought we were super high up on this ride, like it was real 😅 I even dreamed about it after. A forever memory, I still think about it sometimes lol
Going to Disney as a adult for the first time getting on the Peter Pan ride kinda disappointed me. It’s very old and short. Needs an update.
It IS a Fabulous ride!🤗💕
One of my favorites that I always ride.
Me too 🥰
OMG, as a native of OC, born in the 50s, this has always been a favorite of mine, such a joy to experience 😍
It’s a lovely ride!
I feel like this is the best ride at Disneyland. Sure, newer rides can be cooler, or use newer technology, but Peter Pan's Flight represents some of the old Disney magic that used to be for kids.
Love this type of hanging ride. I love the classic animatronic rides. Not everything has to be 3D either.
This happened to me at universal. The jaws ride had broken and it was a 45minute wait just to ride it when it was working after 5 minutes all the impatient people left. The ride was fixed in 5 minutes and we were at the front of the line! Thank you impatient people!!
Park admissions so high just to wait in line.
I remember waiting for 3 years in this line while being a miserable child lol
2-3 hours seems totally normal for Tokyo including the fast lane option 🤣
My favorite ride at Disneyland. ✨
