I think because when you are sad and you're listening to sad songs, it feels almost like the song or the music itself knows what you're feeling or going through at the moment. My girlfriend recently broke up with me, because she went throught some tough times and thought it would be the best to let me go. I loved her with all my heart, did everything for her, and now I'm alone, and I couldn't listen to happy songs. It would feel too unnatural.

Edit: one week ago my life changed, I got promoted from dishwasher to chef, I found a girl that I love and that loves me back she's here for me and my problems and lets me be myself around her, I'm still stressed but alot got better already and it will only keep getting better so if my life can get better so can yours
