    On this episode of Breaking Trail, Coyote has the opportunity to pal around with some Australian Dingos!
    The Dingo is a feral native dog species in Australia. Well known as a part of Australian culture this iconic species is often misunderstood. Throughout their range they have many color variations ranging from dark brown to the traditional tan and white, and even almost pure white in the more mountainous regions.
    Dingos should never be approached in the wild but on this day Coyote and the team were fortunate enough to meet some captive Dingos at the Billabong Sanctuary in Townsville!

      because you never trained patience and or/being calm before getting treats, thats one of the biggest reasons that most dogs "snap" at your hand with smaller treats, they havent had their eagerness or patience trained..
      but even tho i have my own dog trained to the point even an infant could give him a treat and he would gently nibble it untill its away from the hand.
      and still with some treats he like so much even his patience is put to the test, turkey treats i can NEVER make him take gentle lmao thats his favorite

    For those who may be confused. Dingos are not domesticated dogs. There are some crossbred dingos who are house pets, but they are much like the American wolf dog. Great jumpers and escape artists.
    In the wild they act very much like African wild dogs and coyote packs.
    Overall they hunt Kangaroos, rabbits, foxes and even livestock.
    These are captive bred dingos so they are very friendly. In the wild they will chomp your leg and consider you food.
    Edit: to my last part, there are dingos who will ultimately attack you through a large majority will flee. It just depends if they are familiar with humans or not.
    Also yes the Dingo did eat her baby.

    • @emmadilemma00
      @emmadilemma00 Před 6 lety +25

      This is all correct, except for the last part. For the most cases, Dingos have developed flight over fight and will be very cautious and run from humans and other animals significantly bigger than them that they do not consider prey.

      Taylorthe Pineapple well, the kind of are. Dingos have been companions to many aboriginal groups in Australia. The wongapitcha for instance held dingos as very important to the protection and mobility of women and children. With most groups I know of who had dingos as “pets”, they wouldn’t force the animals to stay with them. The pups would be taken from the wild, raised by humans until 1-2 years of age, and then let back into the wild to breed, their pups to be taken as the next generation of companions. This is why the dingo is still such an apex predator, and yet a good and friendly animals to humans. Their wildness must be respected however, as without socialisation with humans they are a notable danger to be wary of.

      @@aaronforsythe8556 Sort of. The Australian Cattle Dog is a breed of its own.
      The Queensland Blue Heeler is a breed of his own also.
      The Red Cattle Dog I think is a separate breed also.
      They are very similar. All bred from a Mixture of European Dogs with some Dingo genes in them by different Breeders. The
      The idea was to breed a rugged compact dog with the courage to handle wild Cattle.
      Most of those I see in the USA appear to be Australian Cattle Dogs.
      The Queensland Blue Heeler looks similar but generally carries his head lower and closser to the ground ready to bite anything on the Heel.
      Also it has a really broad flat head and nozzle. Well suited to go in and bite a big wild Bull or something on the heel. After or as it does that it drops its head flat on the ground and the inevitable kick from the Bull goes over the top of its head.
      They are the real hellers. Very impressive to watch. They can turn say four big wild steers in seconds.
      Its like snap, duck, move, snap, duck, move, snap, duck, move in a smooth motion like a Karate expert.
      Next thing you have four big Steers that were going to break away all back in line with the Herd.
      Unless you can train them to be more restrained than there natural instinct they are a bit too vicious for Dairy Cattle and Cattle that are handled often.
      They also have a less friendly playful type nature compared to the Australian Cattle Dog or even those Dingoes. Very loyal though.

    • @bigpuma444
      @bigpuma444 Před 4 lety

      Skippy No, Australian Cattle Dog is just a colloquial term for Blue, Red and Queensland Heelers. Red Heelers bare the most resemblance to the Dingo, followed by the Blue and then the Queensland. Temperament varies, Queensland Heelers follow direction much more easily and tend to be more preferred on the average ranch; Reds and Blue are a bit more wild, like the Dingo and do often show aggression towards non-pack members as well as playing aggressively with eachother. I own two Blues, including one that’s incredibly possessive of me and whenever a strange dog or man gets too close to me, his teeth are completely bared and the ridge of his neck is standing up. If the warning isn’t heeded, he absolutely will attack in the same fashion that lower ranking members of a Dingo or Wolf pack will if a stranger attempts to go straight up to the alpha

    • @skippy5712
      @skippy5712 Před 4 lety

      @@bigpuma444 I am no expert. All I know is the so called Australian Cattle Dogs I see on Videos stand taller and walk with there head up much higher than many of the Blue Heelers we have in Queensland on many Properties.
      Most of those here walk and run with there head down much lower and tend to turn there eyes up to see straight ahead.
      They are the most vicious heelers. They go in very low and bite and then flatten there head on the ground immediately. That way the inevitable kick goes over there head.
      There head and jaw is more flat also than all those I see in Videos.
      Most of those they show working tend to bite higher up.
      With really wild Cattle they would get kicked in the head or under the Jaw very often.
      Very much like a Red Heeler/Kelpie Cross I had. She was very courageous and intelligent but with some wild cattle I used to buy in she got kicked about 5 times right under her jaw when young. A terrible sound.
      I thought she might lose courage but she was a determined dog. After about the 5th kick she developed her own technique. She would nip just below the knee and throw her head back and sideways. The kick would whistle through on her left.
      She always took the right leg.
      I know most on Properties don't come from Breeders. They are bred locally and sold on Reputation. All colours but mainly blue.
      I am no expert. I just assume those I talk about are the true Queensland Blue.
      They are ideal for really wild cattle. They can also bite like a Karate expert. If 4 wild cattle try to break they just go in whack, whack, whack, whack. Once they bite very low and flatten there head down they also start sliding sideways along the ground to get the next beast. Very fast.
      To be honest I don't believe Breeders have kept them true to the original form anyway. Not in Australia. This one I talk about in Queensland could almost be a breed of its own now.
      They are very vicious. You have to control them all the time. Not that good at herding cattle. You have to control them. Once they bite an animal they never try to break again.
      I thought that was what the original Queensland Blue was like.
      Saw one today following a Girl on a Horse. He was worn out. He was what I would call half that type and half the typical Australian Cattle Dog I see in videos sold to the USA.
      My neighbour had one. His Son in Laws German Shepherd kept annoying him one weekend visit. I had to laugh. In the end this Blue fronted him. He fell for it. Typical Blue he just stepped sideways and got on the side of the Shepherd and bit his leg.
      End of the fight and a $1,200 Vet bill.
      They never fight fair. Only pretend to front Cattle or other dogs or humans.
      I was in a job visiting property's once. It was always the Blue.
      You think he was OK or would cower off. Next thing whack from behind on the ankle.
      I always wore boots thank heavens.
      Yes some are very friendly. Others not friendly at all.
      Not sure what it is.

      Dingos are apparently semi-domestic so they're most likely a common ancestor of moder day doges >.>

    • @lukaspieper633
      @lukaspieper633 Před 6 lety +1

      It is not that they had a common ancestor... they evolved from dogs. They once were domestic dogs that were released (or escaped) into the wilderness of Australia. Having no big land predator in Australia, they didn't had any competition and started to spread and reproduce.

    • @ThorKipperberg
      @ThorKipperberg Před 6 lety +7

      gracie alvis they are dogs, wild ones,but still dogs. Theyr ancestors are wolfs like the wolf is the ancestor to all domestic dogs. The Dingo is not a natural predator in Australia ,it was introduced to the country to reduce the exploding numbers of rabbits and rats that was also introduced to Australia. That didn't work,as the rabbits got more babies faster than the dingo could hunt down. Then the dingo became a problem in its own as it spread across the country,and started to kill local wildlife and domestic livestock.So never introduce non native species,cause you never know if its gonna become a serious problem,both to you and your surroundings,native wildlife and plants .

    This episode was hilarious...
    I love how you do the great build-up, as though you were going into a tiger enclosure...
    Dingoes are basically just dogs. I've had two of them and they're gorgeous.
    I'm surprised you didn't mention the taxonomy debate surrounding the Dingo. I know when I kept them (in the early- and mid-90's) they were 'Canis familiaris dingo', but they've been reclassified 'Canis lupis dingo'.
    I still believe they should be their own species, Canis dingo, as they are different from both pet dogs and wolves.

    • @user-um3qg3rz4k
      @user-um3qg3rz4k Před 6 lety +16

      they do have some differences from dog and wolves (and so do new guinea singing dog). but they can mate with pet dog, that's how we get blue heeler and kelpie. so i don't think they're a specific species.

    • @asyoz
      @asyoz Před 6 lety +10

      But... Dogs and wolves are separate species, and they can interbreed, so, by your theory they should be the same species too, shouldn't they?

    • @user-um3qg3rz4k
      @user-um3qg3rz4k Před 6 lety +6

      yes, they're same species...actually(and so do dingoes). some people might think that they're different, and indeed they are once defined as separate species. but that will contradict the definition of species. so after a ''i don't know when'' times, they're classified as same species.
      i think that taxonomy of lives changes over time is because this planet is not static.(the other reason is that we will never know if they can or not before we make they to) if you hope that one day dingoes can divide from canis lupus, start keeping fraser island totally isolated now...might be a good choice, if you can live few thousand years to see the result.

    • @thatbeechick
      @thatbeechick Před 6 lety +5

      Yep agree. I grew up next door to a dingo x heeler, they are definitely different from domestic dogs but they're super chill when they grow up in captivity.

    • @mc-kq6yd
      @mc-kq6yd Před 6 lety +1

      Connor Welch you do realize red heelers are bred with Dingos right? It's the same with blue heelers only red heelers look more like Dingos

    • @WickedWildlife
      @WickedWildlife Před 6 lety +1

      Shiz Honey Iced T red and blue heelers are the same breed “Australian cattle dogs” and yeah they have some Dingo in their history
      The kelpie does to

    • @mc-kq6yd
      @mc-kq6yd Před 6 lety

      Wicked Wildlife yes but the reason they get called red or blue is dependent upon if they look more like a dingo or not

    • @mc-kq6yd
      @mc-kq6yd Před 6 lety +1

      Wicked Wildlife also they don't have some they were bred with Dingos for the explicit purpose of mixing the Dingo tactic of biting at the animals heels and so to get that their DNA is actually got a bit of Dingo due to them having the instinct to bite the heels of cattle and what not. In fact it is not uncommon to see breeders today breed Australian cattle dogs with Dingos in order to get more of the red variety of them as they sell for more

    • @mc-kq6yd
      @mc-kq6yd Před 6 lety +1

      Khalan Wheeler not just that they wanted their ankle biting instinct for herding animals like horses and cattle as they had tougher skin than most Aussie animals and it proved to be effective
