    How am I 45 years of playing? I’ve only been using effects for 5 to 10 years but used them in the front until just this week and I’m liking it far better through the effect loop. I just hate the extra cables, ha. I just bought the halo and already had a flashback and carbon copy and now want an el Capistan too. Your playing as always is so incredibly tasty ! I wish you came thru Philly to play a show or do a guitar hang at a local music store.

    I don’t typically run that much gain but I’ve run delays/verbs in front for years (unless I’m using a modeler). I’ve always found exactly what you did; darker, fewer repeats, less mix.
    All because I’m too lazy to split my board and use a bunch of extra cables….

    I have the Echoplex, Halo and El Cap pedals. I run a clean amp, and run these before the amp. I agree that an Echoplex style pedal works best in front, especially if there is any dirt in the amp. For me, I prefer the El Cap over the other two, but they are all really good. Thanks for the vid Shawn!

    For me, going straight in on a od channel gives a lo-fi vibe, which may or may not be what you’re looking for depending on the context. The pronounced reverb definitely sounds harsh with that much gain but distorted repeats are useable depending on the situation. Overall, I think it’s generally better to use the fx loop. Mileage varies. Lol @ Revorb!

    I do wonder how much of the formula might change in a mix or live context. What subtleties might get drowned out or accentuated?

    • @ShawnTubbs
      @ShawnTubbs Před 3 měsíci

      Within those parameters, I would have certainly turned up the repeats and delay level. Outside of the mix, the delays would be overwhelming.

  • @jjgson69

    Since the mid 80's, I've run my all my effects into the front of my amp. I tried the effects loop thing, and playing live I always battled volume changes I didn't like. Seemed like my volume and effects level would either be too high, or too low, could never find that sweet spot. Front of amp I have a much easier time with the levels. However, seeing this I'm now going to start experimenting with it again. Rock on!

  • @GitShiddy
    @GitShiddy Před 3 měsíci +1

    I'm someone who doesn't like any effects in the loop, feels like garnish instead of part of the sound, so the more splashed out sounds here are appealing to me. Not as an all the time/for everything but I'd rather have it & not use it than not have it & want it. The solutions for this is well a) you don't need reverb with high gain so just turn it off b) expression pedals for mix which is way more musical & inspiring to have that control all the time.

    • @ShawnTubbs

    I run all of my
    Delays and reverbs in front. Well. the whole board really. I have the option to go effects loop in there, but i dont like it, also more guitar cable travel. Too pristine of a sound in the effects loop. I love how a delay and or reverb or both drive the input of an amp myself so have it in front.

    I like about 3 repeats , one repeat almost at unity gain and the following 2 fade out quickly. and a great big reverb mixed just enough to add a bit of ambiance. Reverb and delay are almost always on , probably because I spend most of my playing time noodling over Elevated Jam Tracks . Tom makes some incredible tracks!

      @@ShawnTubbs reverb last to emulate a bit of room/ life for everything to disburse into. Anything else effect wise would be post production to add craziness or whatever. I’ll let an engineer work out those details.

    Personally, just speaking for myself going through the front end seems too dominating and taking over your sound and tone, as to enhancing and bringing a clarity to your sound and tone. This is what I feel when I do this. Your playing is always incredible, I just like these type of effects through my FX loop. That way is easier for me to tame and control the sounds I want to get from me.
    Great video and experimenting, SHAWN! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍👍

      Running time-based effects this way is a magical mystical balancing act. If I had grown up running my time-based effects in this manner my perspective would be different. Eddie certainly was a master at getting it to work.
      For the most part, I'm with you on this subject. I'd rather have time-based effects in the loop if I use a high-gain channel.
