an Ullrich overcame a second major obstacle in his life when he took control of the Tour de France on Tuesday.
He was a freckle-faced 14-year-old when the first barrier, the Berlin Wall, fell in 1989 and the Rostock-born youngster was able to race in the West.
``I was nine when I took part in my first race and 14 when the Berlin Wall came down and I had my first chance to race in France and Belgium,'' the German said as he donned the overall leader's yellow jersey for the first time.
Ullrich came to prominence when he finished second to his Telekom team leader Bjarne Riis in last year's Tour after a remarkable time trial victory in the penultimate stage at St Emilion.
But insiders such as American Lance Armstrong, recovering from cancer and looking to race again for the Cofidis team, said the young German's talent has long been evident.
``It's not so surprising. He's a talened young guy who was world champion as an amateur (in 1993). He could win many more Tours,'' Armstrong said after the 10th stage, second in the Pyrenees, which Ullrich won by a one minute eight seconds margin.
At 23, Ullrich is the same age as Frenchmen Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault, both five times winners, and their compatriot Laurent Fignon, twice a victor, were when they won their first Tours.
Ullrich named Spain's Miguel Indurain, who also won the Tour five successive times until he was succeeded by Riis in 1996, as his idol.
Symbolically, Ullrich has taken the yellow jersey for the first time -- and the first by a German since Klaus Peter Thaler in 1978 -- in the first Tour since Indurain retired.
Assuming he fulfils his promise as a Tour great, Ullrich will also look back to American Greg LeMond as an influential predecessor.
``I remember him from the first time I saw the Tour on television. He won the yellow jersey,'' Ullrich said.
``Ever since I first watched the Tour I wanted to become a professional and one day wear it.''
Ullrich is out of the same mould, whereas his only real rival in this Tour, Frenchman Richard Virenque, belongs to the old school of pure climbers.
Having shown the potential to take the lead in Monday's first mountain stage when he was second, Ullrich said: ``Today I believed I could. I made the break, then looked back and saw no-one coming with me so I thought this is it and pressed on.''
Riis, who only on Monday was strongly defending his status as team captain, now appears merely to be the link between the Indurain era and a possible new one bearing the name of Ullrich. - Sport
I was 5 at the time and we were on holidays in Andorra! We stayed in the same hotel as the Once team and I even got a hat and autograph of Jalabert! We went to see them on the Ordino! Cool to see this again!!!
Era una pasada ver a Ulrich sobre la bicicleta. Una tecnica impecable, desarrollando la potencia. El sonido de sus pedaladas en contrarreloj daba mucho respeto.
Junto con Miguelón y el Fignon del 84 los ciclistas mas potente que vi.
Al margen de que hubiera EPO etc, para mí el mejor Tour que he visto en mi vida. Es verdad que Ullrich ganó fácil pero el nivel del podium para mí impresionante. Ullrich...talento puro. Virenque... recordman del maillot de la montaña. Y Pantani... El mejor escalador de los últimos 40 años. Nivelazo de Tour.
El más emocionante fué el que le ganó Lemond a Fignon, con la cagada de Perico en la salida del prólogo.
El del 91, el primero de Indurain fué una pasada con Bugno y Chiapucci. De los más emocionantes que he visto.
Y el último gran tour que vi fue el de 2003. Que ganó Amstrong con un exelente Ulrich que hizo segundo.
De no ser por la caída en la contrarreloj el alemán se comía a Gargamel, y se llevaba un tour más que merecido.
También el Giro que ganó Berzin fue espectacular. Con Pantani destrozando Miguelon en la montaña.
PD: ese maillot del equipo Bianchi en 2003, era hermoso.
Ver al chava….. que grande y que lastima. Emocionante subida de ese Tour. Unos tiempos de ciclismo buenísimos.

Ullrich est déjà le vainqueur du Tour 96, malgré toutes les "astuces" de la Telekom. Idem pour les 2es places derrière l'homme bionique américain dont je me refuse à citer le nom.
Y al dopado de Rigs porque no le quitaron el tour del 96?Si reconoció que se habia dopado y a Amstrong si se los quitaron.No entiendo nada

I was 19 when this tour happened. Virenque l, Pantani and Ulrich made me love the sport. Funny to watch now and see how dumb Festina was for strategy.

Desde Miguelon viene la EPO, Ulrich era un crack igual que todos los que ganan
segun he leido por ahi,fue la subida mas bestia de la historia,casi 500 vatios de potencia media,al parecer es como si alguien corriese los 100m en 9 segs,dicho esto,a mi Ulrich siempre me ha gustado mucho
