- I watched again this extraordinary film directed by Götz Friedrich on the tragedy of Elektra, composed by Richard Strauss, and wanted to add a scene where Elektra (Leonie Rysanek) things to be stronger than her mother, Klytämnastra (Astrid Varnay) and vows revenge on the murder of her father. The parts change when Klytämnastra is told that Orest, Elektra's brother and Klymtämnestra's son, has died.
The orchestra was conducted by 86-year old maestro Karl Böhm. He died very soon after this project. This production is available on DVD with a bonus material including a very interesting document on making of the movie. This is one of the best opera movies I have ever seen. The greatest opera movie directors were Friedrich and Ponnelle, as far as I know. - Hudba
Rysanek and Varnay are absolutely superb! What acting and vocalisation! Varnay,s facial expressions alone could have won her an Oscar. Bravi
Who said opera singers of the golden age couldn't act??!!... Varney is spectacular!!!
VivaColoratura Leonie rysaneck
Like out of Fritz Lang or Robert Wiene
She certainly is frightening! Wish Regina Resnik had also been filmed in this role.
@@kennethwayne6857 Resnik's Klytämnestra was filmed in a production from the Hamburg State Opera, with Gladys Kuchta as Elektra.

@@jasonhurd4379 Thank you so much!
Oscar worthy performance from Varnay
Hell yes!!!!
One of my most memorable opera evenings was a Salome with Varnay as Herodias. It was stunning how she dominated the entire stage, whether she sang or not. She was fierce and still had the voice.
No other opera has ever expressed the horror and tragedy of all-consuming hatred with such alarming intensity. And these performances, plus the superb cinematography, editing, etc. are superb. Hard to imagine it better realized.
Agreed. This film would be hard to beat!
The performances are great but the real miracle here is Karl Bohm. His clarity and pacing... never rushing the orchestra
produces the greatest Strauss' Elektra score that I have ever heard.
I think every other Asian horror film in the past two decades was visually inspired by Freidrich's visual design of Elektra. This could easily be Ringu, the opera, for instance. Absolutely stunning visual work. His Salome was brilliant, too. Thank you for sharing this scene with us.
Two of the greatest!
Magnífica Madame Varnay... una de las mejores Wagnerianas no sólo de su época, si no de todos los tiempos.
Maybe their voice here is not that good in this film, but their acting will place them as one of the greatest Elektra performances of all time!
Woooooooaaazzz awesome :-)
whoa! really? Amazing.
Apparently Varnay really disliked this production/portrayal of Clytemnestra. Maybe it's not her vision of the role, but it's still an amazing film and performance!
Wwoooooaaaaazz. Awesome :-)
I am chosing which version of Elektra in DVD I will buy from amazon. This is the probably the chosen one. And with a documentary together? I really like documentaries about compositions or recordings or the making of the movie.
OMG! She was peerless as Elektra, especially in this movie.
She was Elektra ONLY in this movie.
WhoooooaZz awesome :-)
This is TOO HUGE! Maybe even BEYOND WAGNER....Terrifiying.....I know I'll dream of this tonight....Not Pleasant......BRAVI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@jaason53 well i live in france right now, thanks for your help i just ordered the opera
Interesting is that Varnay didn't like the interpretation Friedrich wanted. She felt Klytemnestra should have some vestiges of beauty. She said when she sang Elektra she was right. When she sang Klytemnestra she was right..She wrote the thing -about greek tragedy id that everyone.is right and eberyone is wrong.
Maybe with the whole score in it? I mean, it was a studio recording, so they should have done the whole thing. Especially this scene would have been just incredible 4 minutes longer ;-)
Where can I get the whole opera in HD?
can you please put the whole film on here?
i've been trying to buy the disc in local stores but my luck isn't that big
nobody better!
It is a pitty Eva Marton never sang Elektra against Varnay's Klytamnestra. It would burn.
It would be a festival of out of tune shrieks. Varnay is definitive Klytamenstra, but that's would be way too late for her. A lot of sharp wobbly notes. And Marton was simply no Elektra. Too labored and flat many times although she had a temperament for this role.

@jaason53 I actually tried that.
But I live outside the US and Amazon cant ship
stuff outside US.
Probably the slowest recording of Elektra ever put on tape. To my liking it lacks tension and Rysanek is not the best choice for the role, even though an interesting change instead of her well known Chrysothemis. Finally we can listen to Strauss´ idea of casting two even voices as Elektra and Chrysothemis. Ligendza and Rysanek are a good match.
I personally turned three people into opera lovers via this film. 20 years later and they still thank me for it. We go to the Met when we're in New York and they know more about opera than I ever will. Rysanek's a miracle in this. Just caught Nina Stemme a few months ago. She was fine, but her Elektra was way too mild to be as memorable as Rysanek here. This movie is about the best film of an opera I've seen. Very Fellini and filled with all the blood and passion of Strauss's amazing score.
The film is not bad, not from an innovative point of view but you´re right - it has all the essences for the gruesome atmosphere. When you consider Stemme too "mild", and I know what you mean, Rysanek is similar to that. She did Elektra only for the film since she was not suited for the role. There was discussion if Ligendza or Rysanek should do Elektra and the decision was to follow Strauss` original idea that both roles are about the same level of dramatic voices. So it fits for this production but live Rysanek would have drowned, believe me
Altonahh10 I've never met another singer or opera lover who didn't find Rysanek's portrayal thrilling and even scary. It's almost as good as her Salome.
I find this version the best version, just an example: when Klitemnestra is almost hugging Elektra for the first time and then Elektra ask about her "brother in the house" Varnay's fear and rage unleashed just at the right time on that minor chord is just perfect, really powerful and scary. I've looked for the very same moment on most recording on CZcams and it's not even close....
@@Altonahh10 Rysanek had a huge upper register, so she would've been perfectly audible in sections like this one. Middle voice is a different story. Ultimately, her voice was tailor made for Chrysothemis. As to the pace of the recording, we need to keep in mind that Bohm was basically dying and that a lot of the conducting was apparently actually done by his assistant. That explains the slowness of tempo. Bohm typically took things fast.
