Watched this show religiously growing up, and as for this episode I got the impression that the machine was wrong, as that sometimes happened in other episodes. Child me was very content to accept one of the penguins was biologically female and no one knew who or cared, which may have been because I was dealing with similar struggles in my own life.
Also can I just say Marlene put up with so much shit in this show I always felt so bad for her

    • @godslaughter
      @godslaughter Před 7 měsíci +129

Marlene is so good, she was absolutely one of my favourite female characters of all time in animated shows and movies. And yeah, I need to second this notion. The Guys are written as somewhat unreliable, that's a part of their characters. They are hectic, they are a mess, they are sometimes unhinged, they sometimes say the wrong things, do the wrong things and might not even learn the main lesson at the very end, but they "get the job done". As a kid, I knew that I shouldn't look up to them as actual role models, and I'm sure that many kids still understood that. I think the actual messages from these episodes still are obvious to children, even though the main characters are too *specific* with their mindset to understand.

I did not realize how hyperfixated I was on this show as a kid before this video came out, but as its Coming Back To Me 100% this. the penguins are all idiots and 90% of the episodes sum up to "they do something stupid, get themselves into trouble, and stumble out accidentally and learn nothing." marlene very specifically I remember being a Voice Of Reason character who was almost always in the right about the actually message of the episode, the comedy comes in the penguins being unable to process the actual intelligent stuff she is saying - while the audience agrees with her. the penguins were never the people you were supposed to agree with by the end.

    • @hypnopompicfool985
      @hypnopompicfool985 Před 7 měsíci +63

Yeah but like I think what happened is that Skipper was feeling alienated and dysphoric so he had a crisis and acted out on the ways that he thought he should because the penguins have always been really dumb and he was just trying to understand his role and how he thought it changed.
Not everyone acts like that about gender but many people who have gender insecurities (like skipper did for the first time in his life) will perform unnecessary gender performances for everyone around them to try and belong and make sense, ik many women cis and trans, who wear makeup and dresses and such purely out of insecurity and trying to keep up an act of feeling like they belong when they actually feel that they don't belong.
I remember being a trans egg artist and thinking "well idk why I'm different and why I haven't grown out of hating myself yet like everyone else but I should try really hard to make a sona (a character that represents you almost like a mascot) and I did and it was really weird just trying to pretend to belong but feeling like I didn't, like my own head separated the character from me as it was it's own person and I was thinking it was just gonna happen at some point and it would be fine, like when kids dress differently to try and belong when they have late puberty and everyone else is changing before them. Ik he acts extreme and cartoonish but gender crisis can really make a clown out of anyone.

I'll elaborate a bit. Skipper's sexist jokes aren't what's funny, it's Skipper being an idiot and being sexist that's funny yk? The penguins are idiots who think they're really smart, that's the whole point of the show.

Like the way they treat most of the other characters as means to an end, not as people, eg the captain of the boat in the movie. And their complete disregard for the safety or quality of life of those around them, like THE BOAT. The penguins rickety cricketed that poor man, or like that poor journalist they tied up bc of the bad review. I remember watching an episode where they were doing something with traffic lights that was like Charlie work. Like ambitious schemes.

I, for one, love the idea that Kowalski, being the "scientific genius" transed his own gender, synthesized his own hormones (whatever a penguin may need) and lives that stealth life without even his own commander knowing. Which means that, being faced by the prospect of being outed, he had to cover it up in some way-so building an intentionally shitty machine, causing mayhem and exploiting the troupe's laughably small attention span. That also explains the completely unscientific tests he had Skipper go through. They weren't meant to prove anything because skipper was never the "biologically female" (ugh 🙄) penguin.
(That said, I watched the show so much as a kid, my family loved it, I know how the show's "logic" and humor goes. But as a trans dude… I still stand by this theory tho :p 🐧🏳‍⚧)

I’d rewrite the ending with them going back to the machine and discovering that it stopped working halfway through. Kowalski goes to fix it, but Skipper stops him, telling him to not bother fixing it and just shut it down. One of them, probably Private, would say “but how will you know if you’re a girl or a boy?” The music swells and Skipper smiles, and he tells them “I don’t need to know if I’m a girl or a boy. I’m a leader.”

I think the big message is just that gender is meaningless. Skipper was a man all along, biologically, but when they thought he was a biological girl it changed nothing about what he was before. And when they went with that, Skipper's behavior changed despite nothing changing. But then they go back and it's STILL the case that nothing changed and Skipper returns to how he used to act.
When Skipper was told he was a girl, he did that. But that was never what HE wanted to be, right? Whether they're male or female just never mattered at all, it's all just a matter of perspective and I think that's honestly a pretty good message overall. Don't let what you're born as define who you are, just be whatever you want to be.
Also, I feel like I remember this one as a kid. Might just be me, but I always assumed the 'female penguin' was private. Completely undercutting everything I just said, it does seem like he's often portrayed as the most sensitive and feminine member of the group, right? Not sure if that's the intention or not, but I can see it being something they wanted to go for as an implication here.

In tPoM episode S01E30 “Tagged” Kovalski speaking over the phone with a character who needs to press red button of particular color. And while this character (male) sees 7 identical colors, Kovalski insist that there are 7 distinct red tones and that it’s should be easy to press the right one.
So Kovalski is the trans one. His machine just didn’t work.
P.S. this show is extremely queer and it absolutely makes fun of traditional sexism and gender stereotypes. Skipper wants to be macho man, but in episode where they were getting shots he was trying to do a sexy dance to distract his own teammates. I’m not joking.

Honestly, the stock music title card format is just kind-of good, isn't it? You get to save on a little bit of time and animation, people know what the episode is, and you can even quickly shove in credits. In an age before streaming and episode lists, this would tell you everything you'd really want or need to know if you're trying to decide whether to stick around or what to really expect.
I feel like the only time I've ever heard of the cartoon title card thing being 'bad' was when Fairly Oddparents put out an episode where both titlecards of the 22 minute thing used the same stock music. Speaking of which...
Most species of birds wouldn't see the point of gender-segregated toilets, because they just have cloacas. (Ratites and anserines being the general exception.) (Major props to "Spies in Disguise" for being the only piece of children's media I know of to make an explicit cloaca joke.)
I would've preferred a twist ending where it turned out they were all female, or where the samples got mixed up and never resolved, or (best of all) where there was some question as to the accuracy of the test results, but Skipper and the others ceased to care.
While I recognize shows like these are obliged to preserve the status quo, it's crummy that the certainly-unintentional message sent here was that we only need to really worry about defying or questioning gender roles when we're the lesser sex, and that getting to dodge the bullet of being held to feminine expectations is cause for celebration. It sends the message that the whole deconstruction of gender roles and expectations is solely for the benefit of women, when it stands to benefit dudes, too! Of course Skipper was just relieved and happy to have his gender identity affirmed, but that did unfortunately come across a bit as "oh thank god I'm not a broad."

Arline and Clover from the King Julian series had similar roles as they were the girls who advised the main characters and both were kinda tomboys but Arline's personality didn't often have good chemistry with the cast except for the reoccurring joke that she was the one who made sense and the penguins would say ridiculous things and she would be like idk guys that sounds abit off and then the thing they talked about has a coincidence happen to prove them right and she's like no way these guys are gonna believe it was a coincidence.
But like Clover from King Julian was way more prominent I remember her being in almost every episode and she had a really interesting character arc even though she was abit extreme cause its a kids cartoon and it was interesting to watch how driven she was towards her goals and even though with cartoonish strength she was flawed in a more realistic way or from how I seen it.

The lesson at the end is a joke, and the show is pointing our humerously about how they did learn the wrong lesson. It allows the children watching to learn the lessen...it even drawn attention to it by even mentioning that there is a lesson to be learned here at all. So the characters can stay stagnent to keep being funny, while the viewers are allowed to learn from this episode. private was always my favorite, he regularly crossdresses (usually as bait but he doesnt seem to mind the act) and he was always the most sensible one (shown at the end of the episode here where he says 'we're working on that one') very much a guy, but enjoyed and was regularly doing gender-fucky behavior.
loved him so much dude. as transmasc nonbinary, definitely an influence on my identity.

You did a Pokemon episode, so I think Digimon is worth looking at. In Digimon Tamers, Renamon (the Digimon furries are obsessed with) explains that all Digimon are inherently sexless, so not only is Renamon directly explaining that they're an enby, but it also means all of the other Digimon who do present themselves with a gender are effectively trans. There's also a human NPC in Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (a game with a lot of little queer moments) that explains that they're enby and laments that the VR avatar system only lets you pick between male and female. There's also the all-around gender fuckery of the evolution lines, like Angemon evolving into Angewomon or Devimon evolving into LadyDevimon. There's probably a lot more than this, but those are just the first few things that come to mind.

I watched this show a lot growing up, its nice to come back to it now (now knowing im queer) and view it through a trans lens!!
I love how the Penguins' absurd methods of proving their gender (mainly the board with a picture of a monster truck and a picture of a unicorn) can reflect how absurd how our irl standards and methods of "proving" gender can be (e.g. whether or not we cry, what hobbies or activities we participate in, what clothes we wear, etc). And Skipper suddenly acting "more like a girl" felt more like Skipper internalizing and conforming to what the other penguins expected of him, then convincing himself these expectations must be innate to being a girl (which would be supported by his preexisting notions of gender).
Honestly as far as episodes about transness and gender goes, I do think this episode is pretty solid, at least in presenting nuamced points through the depictions of more un-nuanced/absurd characters (highlighting the absurdity of gender essentialism).
Also i loved you aside about internalized misogyny/patriarchal masculinity and how it's a collaborative effort from everyone to deconstruct unhealthy biases ans social attitudes, that's an excellent point!!

I just grew up learning the usual, "boys are supposed to like this stuff and girls are supposed to like this stuff." and though I haven't completely come out, I did tell my mom that I enjoy girly stuff. and she's completely fine with it. she lets me act like a girl and wear pretty things. I don't know if I'll ever be brave enough to actually come out, but for now, I'm fine with being a girly guy. and maybe that's the lesson of this episode. it doesn't matter what your birth gender is, you should just do whatever you want to do and act however you want

Actually with the penguins gender thing:
There is a way to tell a penguins gender without DNA Testing (although I do agree that DNA Testing is the easiest way to test on any bird’s gender) is that depending on the species of penguin since in some penguins: Males are bigger (typically) and have larger beaks but differences can differ depending on the penguin

I watched this show a lot as a kid, to the point that when I saw the Central Park Zoo's penguins, I thought of them and not the gay penguins, which is a shame. I think that it's important to consider that the penguins aren't necessarily the heroes, as you said, they are more oblivious nuisances, like in the movies apparently. That's also shown to the audience a lot, something happening and them taking credit for it or claiming to have fixed a situation that is obviously worse. Marlene is definitely portrayed to be reasonable and the penguins to be pretty unknowledgeable in real life stuff. That said, obviously they are still the protagonists and role models to kids for being cool, so that doesn't negate that the messages they are sending are super sexist. I've also noticed that this is one of the few children's shows I know that deals with biological sex and that it can be different from gender expression and identity, even subtly. Obviously, it then understands that to be a mistake it wants to correct to make them "match", so that's less good. The biological sex not being obvious from the outside gets a plus point and so does the societal expectations influencing your own traits and behaviour without you meaning to let them. I also think the moment where Skipper gives up trying to suppress his supposed gender and thinks his only way out is through the one way he assumes femininity and womanhood to be is interesting. If I had kids, would I let them watch this? Probably only if I let them watch that show at all and also if they had enough media with positive trans and gender nonconforming rolemodels portrayed as good in their lives.

A queer analysis of the penguins honestly makes sense and could be interesting. Penguins irl are some of the queerest species out there, we all know gay penguins exist, and that the dads take care of the eggs more than the mums. And when we take a look at the movie it gets interesting that Private was an egg when the three met him as kids, the three then raise Private as basically teen parents? Private has three dads guys. The found family dynamic of the Madagascar penguins is very interesting

Honestly, I know it's not one of *those* kinds of shows, but I think the ending would have been a lot more meaningful if they just... didn't turn the machine back on.
If Skipper was like, "hey, it's okay, I don't need a machine to tell me what I am" and just leave it open ended that he could be either but doesn't care because it doesn't change him.

I mean, Alice the Zookeeper *might* be right, but she's also consistently shown to be neither very interested nor very caring about the animals. Hell, in one of the episodes, a bunch of mammals end up getting eaten by a large constrictor and somehow Alice doesn't notice how a bunch of animals are missing and the snake is massively overfed. She's honestly a bit of a strange character because she comes across as someone who's only in it for the money, in which case zookeeper is a really odd occupation since it's a lot of work, not super well-paid and not all that easy to get into.
In any case, I don't necessarily think the episode undermines itself for the simple fact that deeply internalized toxic masculinity is part of the penguins persona, at least for most of them. Private probably not quite as much, he seems to be more open minded.
The episode takes place across what, a single day? Of course they wouldn't learn a lasting lesson from that single experience.
Being childish and immediately forgetting learned lessons is also a consistent character trait. Even though they're the main characters, they're genuinely kind of stupid, mostly because they're so convinced that they always know best. Their ignorance is a defining character trait.
The fact that they're super relieved and act like nothing happened as soon as Skipper is confirmed to be male after all actually serves to underline the moral of the story because you're not supposed to agree with the penguins. They do silly things, and therefore the way they walk out of it all is also silly. There's a reason we see Marlene try to object at the very end because the writers knew what they were doing. Marlene is almost always right in this show, so young viewers would have picked up that the message is usually "Do how Marlene says, not how the Penguins do"

real missed opportunity for the show to end on "who cares if i'm female, i'm still the manliest man around!" and reset the status quo by just, having everyone decide that this changes nothing and move on. it just never comes up again because it doesn't need to.
i know this show is from an earlier era where there's no way that was going to happen because trans people existing was on so few people's radars, but still, it would've been a way better ending imo.

While he was trying to be a female, he acted all femenine not because that's what felt right, but because he felt that's what he had to do, so it wasn't genuine. While it is a bit of a cult classic, with the christmas season approaching, I recommend checking out the animated chirstmas film "Tokyo Godfathers" which has one of it's main three characters as a trans woman and former drag queen. While parts of her depiction are a bit dated, with the film having been made in 2003, the film also shows a lot of sympathy for her character, highlighting the reality of queer and trans people ending up homeless and having to create a chosen family of their own without the support of their birth family.
