    I bought a new 158 W Mega Mercury and Union Falcor Bindings, in October. 160 lbs 5'9", 40 years old over 30 years of experience. I was overly excited about getting out to ride it. Fast directional carving is what I spend most of my time doing. I live in Northern MN, our snow conditions are mostly hard pack groomers. Sadly, I've never rode a more difficult combination in my life. The Mega Merc is a disaster on hard pack or ice. It does not ride flat or transition from flat to mild turns with confidence. You gotta go full tilt to full tilt wide open to get anything out of this board. I've switched binding positions, boots, bindings, edge tunes etc. I have many full camber boards larger than this and rip on them with ease. I've been able to ride this thing in fresh snow, softer groomers, and some powder. It's good in these conditions. Super stable, can knife edge carves, with a ton, absolute ton of power in the nose and tail, Super light for sure. This thing is made for fast powder backcountry big air. That's it. It is not an all around resort board or easy ride. It's like driving a Formula 1 car with a family of crying children in your lap. It's a 1 track machine. Great at what it dose, but not at all a daily rig. Very edgy, wants to flatten out in transitions or at low speeds, terrible on ice and hard pack, requires 110% effort and concentration to ride. Not relaxing at all. I've had a half a dozen friends ride it and the consensus is basically the same. It's for sale if anyone wants to buy it!!!! IMHO. I have other Capitas (Ultra Fear, BSOD) and they are great. This is just my experience with the Mega MerC I truly believe the regular Mercury and or the regular width would be a better option. There is zero torsional flex in this thing, like none. Makes turn initiation comparable to closing the hood of a car. Either just slam it all the way or you're left in no mans land........

      I just spent 4 days on east coast tracked out heavy pow, bulletproof ice, and warm soft snow riding a regular Mercury... Everything you said is accurate for the Merc too. Rips when you are trying, but terrible flat base, cruising or in anything less than hero snow.

    • @JohnnyEase

      Why would you say the Mega Merc is an F1 car with family while you say the BSOD is a better board? Might elaborate? I assumed, the BSOD is an even more aggressive boarf

    I’ve had two seasons on the 57, 84kg 10.5 boot union atlas medium.
    For me this is pretty quick edge to edge and isn’t too bad at slower speeds over bumps etc. has great drive on the carve from centre of the board. I get a a great turning experience from this board.
    Overall i felt this was worth the hype. I hadn’t rode a regular Mercury before though.
    I compared it to my asymulator 2022 56 which I loved too. Similar but not but rode similar. 😅

    Super in depth analysis, way bettter than just reading specs. Thank you! I’m torn between the mercury and the mega merc. Been snowboarding for ~15 yrs, love powder, trees/freeride, and to point it and go as fast as possible.
    I don’t really hit the park as much anymore, down for some tables or side hits but not a lot of rails these days.
    It sounds like the mega might be a little faster on flat/cat tracks, do you think it’s worth the additional $200 or would the regular mercury be adequate? Thanks so much for the informative vid!

      @thegoodridesnow  Před rokem

      Many thanks! Its a really tough call. Since the Mega Merc doesn't seem to be more chattery I think it comes down to if you want more pop and a little more of a dynamic all around ride. Like you said, that does cost $200 more. If you want in depth detailed advice hit me up here. thegoodride.com/snowboard-binding-and-boot-advice/

      Mega Merc doesn't initiate a turn fast and the Supermatic/Rift combo isn't super fast turning but its responsive enough with size 10 boots. 9.5 will be ok too.

    Just picked up the new mega merc 160w. Been riding a DOA for 7 years. Wondering if it’s going to be any type of forgiving when riding switch on groomers and butters.

    • @thegoodridesnow
      @thegoodridesnow  Před rokem +2

      It is somewhat stiff but the camber profile is pretty forgiving. I'd rather be on a stiffer board with forgiving camber than a softer board with unforgiving full camber. The flex will make it hard to do some things but the pronounced early rise after the camber will make it less likely to catch an edge.

    • @thegoodridesnow

      I would say yes to exchanging it for a 157 but it depends on these factors:
      1. What make model and size board do you have now?
      2. What boots and bindings do you have?
      3. Also how do you like the old set up?

    • @thegoodridesnow
      @thegoodridesnow  Před 3 měsíci

      No. You can do a lot better in hard snow and it's not something I recommend for east coast riders. It's also not that great in pow if you like to set it back to get directional float. It's ok if you ride pow centered and like to ride switch but most don't. Boards like the YES Standard Uninc, Basic Uninc, and a lot of boards from Gnu and Lib Tech do massively better in hard snow. You should go to thegoodride.com/snowboard-reviews/?mens=1 and use the filter "icy" in "Edge Hold" to see what boards would work well out east. Mega Merc has less pop than both boards (still has good pop though) but is much more forgiving and versatile. Especially if you set it back in pow. Proto Synthesis is less versatile than the mega merc (not much set back in pow) but is more versatile and more forgiving than the DOA. Pops and carves hard too. It carves well, it is stable, good on speed but also very forgiving, not catchy. Unfortunately it is no longer in Yes line up:(. I am looking for similar board to Decade. Many thanks! If you want the Basic Decade get the Basic Uninc. It's damper with a different construction but still the same shape and overall ride. Or go Standard Uninc but it runs a little wider and has more camber. Still has the set back inserts like the Decade for pow. The Mega or Mercury is pretty comparable to your Decade as well. It has a little less camber and more rocker. It also turns a little slower if you size it correctly. Could for sure work though. Very fun board. Especially if you like to ride more centered in pow.

Sometimes powder but not often in park. I am 6" tall, weigh 170-175 LBS and have shoe size US 9. I am leaning towards the 155 due to my shoe size but do you think that I will have enough stability on higher speeds and length for carving as I come from a 159 board (flex 6, directional twin, camrocker and waist widt 250mm)? On the othe rside the 157 might be wide and feel to big. Thank you in advance for your advice! Kind regards, Sander

My specs are Size 9 US, 185lbs, 5'10". If you want this board I'd just go 157 as it's going to float better in pow and it will be more stable. Especially if you have responsive bindings/boots. @thegoodridesnow  Před rokem +1

      There are a 4 types of Magnetraction. These aren't the exact names but there is Full Mag, .5 Mag, .25 Mag and almost no visible Mag. So if you mean by a normal old school single radius to some mellower multi radius sidecut's, then yes Full Mag, .5 Mag and .25 mag is often but not always better. There are lots of other disrupted sidecuts out there these days that are comparable to all the Mag's as well. so it really has to be on a board vs. board basis to say with any certainty. Hope that helps.

    • @thegoodridesnow
      @thegoodridesnow  Před rokem +1

      It's very similar edge to edge. It's a bit narrower where you mount the bindings but the sidecut isn't that quick edge to edge and it doesn't turn as tight a circle once you get it on edge like the Standard Uninc. The flex is similar board to board and so is the pop. I would say that the good bit extra camber of the Standard Uninc gives it more pop and feels stiffer near the tip/tail. I don't think the Mega Merc or Merc would be a good transition. Maybe consider the Basic Uninc 158 instead but this is just a guess not knowing your specs. I had attributed that delay in turning to the quadratic side cut and extremely sharp edges. By day 8 and also centring my Union strata’s more it had improved, I also detuned the contact points at the tips a little. My question is will a less structured base with time improve that grabby hold? 😅 Thanks for the years of awesome reviews. I bought a 2011 trs on your recommendation and still ride it. Chris.

      No problem and thanks Chris! I think the Mercury and Mega Merc don't have fast turn initiation to start with. Not good or bad...just how they are designed like I talked about in the review. I think if the board came with a lot of structure that can for sure make it hard to turn in certain conditions. You might want to mellow it out with a base grind to see if that helps. Especially if you aren't riding in a lot of wet snow.

      Hey James, just watched your bsod review where you said the same. That’s a really interesting thought. Worth a try. Cheers mate.

    How does the Mega Mercury compare to the Cardiff Lynx?

      Lynx is a little more damp in all conditions, is more turny, and more directional float. Mega Merc is better switch and has a little better pop.

    I enjoyed riding this board, but my initial impressions on this deck left me a bit disappointed. It’s designed to release a lot of kinetic energy when loaded, which makes for a poppy ride that does work well on small kickers and side hits I ride on. It’s quick and responds well when pushed, but feels slightly jittery at top speeds, especially on uneven/choppy terrain. Almost like it’s going to wash out moving hard from toe to heel. I also rode this deck in fresh pow, tight trees with good snow, and some icy rollers, just felt like an average cam rocker board, nothing special. It is really light and it’s built with some cool tech, and if you’re hitting medium to larger features on clean snow (which I am admittedly not) then you’re really going to leverage the snap and flex on this board. I’ll readjust my stance/bindings and put on a good layer of wax then give it another go and report back, but this might be too much board for me.
    Also @ just south of $800.00 feel a bit overpriced.
    Great review BTW, keep it up!

      Quick update: after a binding adjustment and a good layer of wax the board performs much better (advice in the review about centering was correct). Significantly more stable move maneuverable and the pop and speed are still off the chart. Sickness achieved.

      @@Failure2send did you de tune the edges? I have mine in the shop getting a fresh wax and tuned. My bindings are being centered like my park board in hopes it takes the twitchy ride of death out of it!

      @@Tr3zn3r Nope - just center up my bindings and apply a good layer of wax. Board seems to engage with a bit of weight over the nose, made all the difference.
