    Two things I have never been able to do:

    After having made film for a few years, I now have this tremendous sympathy for every film that gets bad reviews. I mean, knowing how much effort i put into making something like a 5-minute-film, makes me cry almost thinking about how much effort someone put into a feature just to have it slaughtered. It's important that filmmakers remind one another that we're not alone in this dauntingly difficult line of work. Making a film is hard - making a good film is really, really hard. Godspeed, everyone.

    THIS.
    The amount of times I think "Ugh, this is garbage. If I start over from the beginning I can make it so much better!" is uncountable. You have to realize that's not the case and stick to it until the end.

    Thanks Simon for making this. Most people don't state this obvious procrastination that we filmmakers have. I have such a hard time every time I make a film and feel like I want to quit every time because I'm not good enough. I love your idea of making something for someone else, you are definitely right that we are the most critical of ourselves. Thank you.

    Simon, I can't tell you how many times I've experienced this feeling. It seems it happens to me whenever I start any new project or look back at an old one. I like to know that other people have been able to get past this feeling like you. It gives me a little hope. I love how your videos don't just cover the basics of the filmmaking like lighting, camera movement, color grading, etc (though your channel does do an amazing justice on these topics) but I also like how your channel covers the more abstract and common questions us as filmmakers sometimes ask ourselves. Anyway you are one of my favorite people who produce content on CZcams and whenever I see one of your videos in my subscription
    feed, I know it's going to be good.

    Great work man! As an artist I understand that I am my own worst enemy. I pull my work apart and find every flaw, even though a hundred people may love it. I know the feeling and love your advice! Taking the focus off of you and the project and putting the focus on someone else and how it will impact them!

    I love the mesage, but what I REALLY LOVED was the way you did a j cut with the audio coming in a split second before your video did. That was a really powerful effect for me.

    Wow thank you so much for making this! I am right there with you currently! Just came off a project that turned out better than i hoped and was truly a porject I was proud of. Now after that I had filmed another piece for a local non profit. during filming everything seemed to be going smooth. But now sitting down editing it slowly dawned on me that what I had was nothing like I had envisioned. to be honest I have lost a TON of sleep over this and pushed the project back. Even to a point where I completed deleted an original edit looked back at the script and realized it was totally crap and rewrote everything trying to work with what I have already filmed to craft something completely different. It's total hell for my creative self and this video spoke to me profoundly.
    Thanks for sharing I am sure it means just as much to me as so many other creatives, not just film makers, who hit these walls and question everything. It's always good to hear of the other people suffering through similar problems as you.
    Inspiration acquired the fire is back... Thanks :)

    this is exactly what i needed to hear right now. editing through a 'big' project. it's big for me but its probably a day's work for someone else. constantly expecting it to be better and bigger than it is. thank you for the reassurance that i'm not alone in my self-depreciation.

    I have been shooting weddings for a little over 2 years, and I have quit over 100 times. Its good to hear someone that I look up to talk about the same exact feelings I have.

    This is the first video I've seen where another filmmaker really opened up to their struggles and didn't just breeze through it and act as if they aren't that big of a deal and only some filmmakers have these problems. I've been though all of those in the last few weeks, and I know I will again, but it's a great thing to know that I'm not alone. Keep up the great work!!!God Bless!!!!

    I admire your candor. It is true that, in the end, we creative artists (not just filmmakers) must not lose sight of our goal: to create an emotional impression on the viewer/listener, whether by telling a story or sending a message. Everything else serves just to help us achieve that goal- every microphone, every paintbrush, every plugin, etc. If you were able to move the audience emotionally even in the slightest way, then, mission accomplished.

    I really appreciate this video as I have noticed that this seems to ring true for me. I'm a beginner filmmaker and I'm taking a video production class in school, although the teacher doesn't seem to know much about filmmaking at all. So using your videos and a majority of other resources, I've dedicated each project for this class to taking risks and trying something new and different every time. But with every project I make, I eventually come to hate it and wish we didn't have to share them with the class. Everybody else is so easily impressed with the videos, and I've noticed that it's allowed me to feel alright about turning in work that I'm not completely proud of. I just hold a much higher standard for myself. Thanks for this video, it helped a lot! This channel is my go-to for everything film-related!

    My First film i shot, was an amature action Movie, ive done with my friends.
    We decided to make a xmas present for our parents and it was a great project for all of us and now my parents have great memories:)

    100% agree with you buddy! Been filming since aged 12 (so...28 years from now). Never been stopping. Found awesome to be able to broadcast through CZcams when it just started.
    And finally, 3 weeks ago: found a new way to film, edit and tell a story FOR SOMEONE especially. No more interest in film festivals. Just for fun and for free! Boy, what a relief! And I think this movie might be one of my bests so far... So, I'm a member of the club I guess, and happy to be. Best regards, and keep on the good work that you already do! ;-)

    you can never like your own film.. beacuse you see the things you did wrong.. However those mistakes are only mistakes compared to what you had visualised before making it..but still this disatisfactions is what makes us become better

    Not only does this apply to filmmaking in my opinion. I think you were able to broaden your words to reach out to even other various types of aspiring individuals. I'm an artist and you've just inspired me even greatly. I'm starting right now to create an artwork for a friend I need to make amends with. Thank you, Simon, for the inspiring words.     It's so scary sometimes: when I'm at a really difficult part of filmmaking it just crosses my mind of the possibility of giving up right then and there. I never do but it just scares me that I think that sometimes!

      Everyone even the pros have these thoughts. We all humans. Just that some are more advanced than others. Eventually with time and effort youbwill get to your destination. If you desire to be a filmmaker and work on it everyday. Perhaps ypu skip college because you are concentrated in filming. If you have to work for 2 years to get enough money for your films. Then so be it. Whatever you do. Do it because thats what you want. What will be your legacy? One life brother. One life to do that. Let's risk it.

    Good one Simon! Someone once said. It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat. Do what you love......you may never be rich, maybe nobody will ever see your work. But YOU......will be happy!

    iv been watching your videos for the past couple hours and this one kindof broke through the wall of a "tutorial video" into something so real. Its hard to articulate or fully encapsulate everything. Usually seeing someone younger than me so productive and absorbing filmmaking knowledge and experience so quickly would make me feel inferior or maybe even jealous but this video somehow broke through something beyond inspiration. not everything can be outlined, followed, and solved in a couple of clear easy steps. and thats okay. im going to try like hell and that WILL be good enough. Im going to do what I can. Thanks

    This may be the most relatable video I think I've ever seen in my entire life. I really thought deeply about how the principles you talked about can be applied to anything I pursue in my life, not just filmmaking and photography, which really is an amazing thought: that I learned so much about my life and pursuing the things that mean the absolute most to me in a short 4 minute video. Simon your videos keep getting better and better, and let me just say that very few people on youtube are doing what you are doing with the magnificent passion and truthful dedication that you clearly have. I hope you know that your videos truly are having a meaningful and significant impact on us, the viewers, because it's honestly nice to learn about key aspects of filmmaking and key aspects life at the same time.     That's some really great advice there.
    I've spent over a decade in music production and I've gotten so many projects that I didn't finish and put out there because I invested too much time in them and my standards or mood changed or I couldn't make them live up to the standards/idea I had.
    I just heard someone say the quote: "Don't let perfection get in the way of good enough."
    Yeas I sometimes dread editing a video, and then I wait and put it off, and my taste and standards grow. And then it's later and I don't even want to bother cuz I consider it old by then. Even though the practice of editing it there and then when doubting would have been better. It would be a new video for the audience, it would probably teach me something as well.

    I started out with a ton of self doubt. ( am a 3D CGI artist, not a film maker, but it should still apply). The most powerful thing I've learned is, when looking at someones work, do not think "I will never be that good" instead, "I will be that good someday". It's funny how a little change in thinking makes a huge difference. That advice has led me to a full time freelance job in a competitive market. It's possible, trust me ;)

    The mark of a true artist is knowing when to stop. I'm afraid I'm not there. One of the reasons that I haven't posted a video in years is that as my abilities and equipment improved, I became more aware of what I wasn't doing right in my previous work. I find myself constantly refining ideas and setting standards that are probably too ambitious. Hemingway was once asked how to become a good writer and he said, "apply the seat of the pants to the seat of a chair and write." Sometimes I forget that it works for making videos, too.

I can relate to everything you talked about here and I've never heard a lot of it articulated.     I've almost finished editing a short comedy film and my motivation has gone really low - I've been panicking that nobody is going to find it funny. This has lead me to procrastinating like hell!     great thoughts. It's all about having a growth mindset as opposed to a fixed mindset. With a growth mindset you can use the things that discourage you and turn them into things that inspire you.

    Hi Simon,
    You should never be too critical of the first outings. They are what MAKE you a better film maker. I did a job for an Amdram (Amateur Dramatics) Group who were putting on Carmen. I had a week to film from every angle you could imagine. All on Digital Hi8 Tape. (SHHHHHH). I worked with what I had, cutting and manoeuvring around the software of the day and the Amdram LOVED it. They were not DVD's then. But VHS tapes. (AHHHHH). LOL
    All these years later I am now about to take the master tapes into FCPX 10.2.2 and "have at it" with more experienced eyes. It is not going to be for sale. It is to see how I have changed since then as a film maker. (hopefully I have improved).
    The project of taking someone at random, a relative, a mate, and do a simple cut about (or Radio Cut, as it would be known) is a backward step for you, IMHO.
    I have followed you from the start and admired your work ethic and how you are growing all the time. Take a few years and THEN go back and do a "Directors Cut" with todays advantages in technology and software/hardware.
    Keep 'em coming, mate. You're doing just fine.

    All the greats have surrounded themselves with the absolute best people in the industry. Watch any of their early works, shorts, etc. Gives you a more realistic view of what they did with no budget, & what you can potentially achieve with an adequate budget.

    Actually this comes at the right time for me at this moment as I'm stuck.
    I want to visualize 1 line of dialog into 4 short vignettes as I realized I was doing too much tell and not enough show. This addition is last minute so there no time to think deeply about what can be done but I still want it to be impressive.
    Can you imagine right now by just writing this I realize what I am doing wrong, I am tunnel visioning, I got one concept that works in my head but will not work on screen. I will now just crumple it up and toss it in the waste basket. And do something simpler.

    Great Video. I'm constantly feeling like this. Even when I'm finishing one project, all I can think about is the next one. I always seem to be asking myself, " When am I going to make something actually good?" I wonder if that will ever go away.

    amen.! creative people i don't think will ever be satisfied. its sort of what drives us. time and time again i hear filmmakers like coppola scorsese and speilberg find faults in their work, this didn't really work how i wanted it to, i didn't like that scene, i couldn't find what i wanted here. it's all part of the journey.. embrace it. not being satisfied generally leads to improved work.

    Ok, so once again, great video. Since we last spoke I've been very fortunate to pick up filmmaking less as a hobby and more as a profession, and I'm working on a documentary right now (go me!). Feels really good to do what I love every day! However, I wanted to pose two names here: Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese. Every filmmaker should have at least some understanding of the journeys of these two beloved filmmakers even though I'm not the wildest fan of their movies. Why? Because I think that Tarantino and Scorsese have a playfulness that pushes them through the tough points . . . they have a "let's have fun" mentality that's just addictive. Let's take Tarantino for example. The dude never went to film school, much less touch a camera until he was around 24 years old. What did Tarantino do? He worked at a video rental store watching film after film after film. Eventually, he ran out of films to watch, so he asked himself, what film do I want to watch right now? And guess what, he went out and made it. Or look at Taxi Driver, a classic urban western inspired by John Ford and the greats of Westerns, giving a new twist to the noir. The point? That it was never about filmmaking, it was about fantasies and dreams. I think it's ok to binge watch TV, read a book, and go for a walk, that's where the inspiration's at :) Heck, my start to filmmaking began after work tossing pizzas at 1AM watching Kurosawa films late into the night.

    Really nice tip!
    I'm working on also a project, and I wonder if I'm able to top my previous work.
    I would like to add to the 'make it for someone specific', that you should find at least 1 fan who is knowledgeable, recognises your works core beauty, and you see frequently.
    Having no film friends, you'll not get specific detailed recognition. They do not recognise the beauty, often cannot feel it, let alone be able to verbalise it. Their commends do not get past, I like it, love it, hate it. However these laymen can provide some value, for instance to know how 'accessible' you need your art to be. Often with a bit of prompting and education the can start to see the depth layers, and maybe they'll grow an interest and love for your (branch of) art. Having an expert friend can really be helpful at much deeper levels, though making something for them is really challenging because you know it needs to be perfect for you, but still your expert can see a 100 things that could be done better. However maybe the mindset then could be, make something short, something out of your comfort zone. Analyse yourself, and see how the expert's observations surprise you. It maybe more a tutor-student relation. But pleasing, or should I say surprising? experts is really difficult to do. What are experts looking for anyway?
    What are you looking for when watching / reviewing other peoples work?
    How has that changed over the course of your filming career?
    Bonus;
    Making something specific for someone also helps you to focus on the other persons mind, and learn how that person works and thinks in great(er) detail. This knowledge will make the characters you write in the future deeper, colourful and interesting, because you know people intimately. And like photography and other arts intimacy is the way to the receiver's heart.

    I agree with most of the things said in this video. But I am very pleased with the work I do as an Artist and a Filmmaker. I agree that learning new from the greats can help you grow but I don't see any sense in comparing yourself to the greats. I think the only person you should compare yourself to is who you were. That will help you get better as you correct your mistakes in the future. it dosent mean I don't experience self doubt. So thank you for the video.
