Welcome and thank you for watching , more videos coming up soon..
Very nice. I picked one this morning. I was concerned at first because I didn’t expect a yellow spot. I’d been watching it for a few days. Went online and learned about the dried tendril. It has that good hollow sound too.. I will cut it when my daughter comes home from work. Thank you
Awesome! That's super exciting!! I hope it's super red and delicious for you guys !
Thanks, Buddy! great, helpful video. God Bless You

Welcome Brittany! Thanks for watching 💚
Looks perfect! This is my first season growing them. My tendril is drying out, not quite brown and the yellow spot is pretty small. I think it's almost there!
Thank you! It was delicious 😋 .. your almost there , always knock on it too , if it sounds hollow your good to go , brown tendril and hollow sound, the yellow spot sometime small or big , sometimes not even there ...
Thank you! This is my first year growing fruits and vegetables and I have at least seven sugar babies coming in and one of them is getting awfully close! I wasn’t sure how big they would get until I saw your melon in your hand. Very helpful video!
Awesome congrats! You have a lot of them growing for your first year ..good work.. and thank you 🙏💚 they don't get that big ...
where are you? I ask bc mine are small. I'm in New England

Thanks man! This is an easy trick I won't forget

Thank you,Sir! My first year planting sugar baby watermelon
Your welcome! And nice ! Enjoy... super delicious 😋
Thank you for sharing.
My daughter planted Sugar Baby Watermelons. The watermelon turned dark green and I thought it was going bad. 😅 Good to know it's right on schedule. No yellow spot and I will check the tendrils. It just rained so hopefully we're almost there.
Lol Dark green is good , getting ripe , It doesn't always have the yellow spot on the bottom, Look at the tension, make sure it's brown and if you don't have any tendrils try knocking on the watermelon. Listening if it's sound hollow is another way too..
@@Greentgarden Thank you.
You're welcome 💚
WaaaLLaaaaaa ;)
I'm off to have a look at the tendril!
Thanks, the tendril was very dry, the yellow spot was there and also a pronounced hollow noise when tapped. Having it tonight with the family, I guess now that I've harvested the one, another fruit will rapidly develop to take its place!
Getting ready to harvest my 1st sugar baby! One of them the tendril is starting to get brown! Im so excited!
Awesome! Congratulations!!
Make sure you have a yellow spot too or give a light knock on the watermelon. If it sounds hollow it's good to go.. sometimes the tendril gets brown and it's still not fully ripe..
@@Greentgarden Thank you!
Welcome Holley ! Happy Friday 🌱
I'll take a Green Tea Garden hat too$😁
Lol Will definitely try to make some clothing later on 💚
Good stuff brother. I’ll definitely check out your channel!
Thank you 🙏🏾🌱
Bai... Your garden is impressive for where you live! Wonderful work :D
Lol thank you so much cuz 🙏💚
Mine had the yellow spot, brown tendril, completely dark with no light green tint anywhere, had that perfect sound, well into the harvest period, but it was only white/light pink inside. I can’t figure it out
Oh sorry.. you had all the right signs to harvest... So what I realize the yellow spot normally comes because the watermelon is on the ground and it's resting on that side. It's not always guaranteeing. The other thing I noticed when the trellis even turned brown is to leave it about another 3 weeks later cuz I ran into the same problem last year... Very strange but I did got a better harvest... Sorry again I hope you could get more harvest before the seasons ends 🌱🙏🏾
Tks for sharing 🙂 What state & zone are you. I'm zone 6b Northeast NJ...we here have a short summers
Most welcome and yes we do have a short summer , here in zone 7a NY .. still waiting for the normal spring weather here lol
Watermelon has a curly tendril where the fruit was connected to the vine during the growing process. If the watermelon is ripe, the curly tendril should be almost completely dried out. If the curly tendril is green, the watermelon was picked too early and is not ripe.
Very nice , thank you so much for sharing these wonderful tips.. this helps me and everyone who saw this ... Thanks for watching 💚
My tendril broke off because of some weather is there another way to tell? I'm also growing my watermelon off the ground so they dont get a spot
The green color becomes dull. The rind will get hard. The blossom end will soften.
Try knocking on the melon , if it sounds hollow, it should be good ...
Had a yellow spot on the bottom so I picked my first one but it was yellow inside. Is something wrong or I just didn't wait long enough??
Very sorry , that means you pick too early , and they're also some variety but are yellow watermelons.. but if you plan the red one and it's yellow, definitely pick too early.. If you have that yellow spot in the bottom, check your tendril next to the watermelon. Make sure that's brown , and one more thing you could do is knock on your watermelon if it sounds hollow. Well that's all three signs you need and you're good to go to harvest..
Thanks for the info brother I'm fixing to grow some
Your welcome, and thank you for watching, good luck! Enjoy and have fun.. more videos coming up
Hi..will watermelon and cantaloupe cross pollinate with cucumbers bc im growing them close to eachother and i would like to save seeds from them..thx
So these plants I believe cannot pollinate with each other. They are different... But you could definitely grow them side by side
@@Greentgarden thank you
Welcome
i just harvested a sugar baby with a super crispy brown tendril, sounded hollow, had a yellow spot, it was completely white inside!!!!!! My disappointment is immeasurable lol
I am very sorry to hear that... Same thing happened sometime with me.. but some other ones like The jubilee it was pretty ripe..
When you have all this signed that it's right leave it for another 2 weeks I would say just to be sure..
I hope you have more watermelons to harvest 🙏🏾🌱 you got this
Dam that looks so delicious
It was! Homegrown watermelon is really good... Should have one coming up next 2weeks.. will do a video when harvesting
Another question plz...is it better to grow watermelon in the ground versus pots?if so..why?thx
In Ground definitely.. The Roots get to spread out more You get more oxygen. You don't have to water often or fertilize often like a container...
In a container you have to water more, feed the plant more and if you miss a day or two in the garden you could stress out the plant big time... Especially if the sun is hot..
@@Greentgarden thank you again..I appreciate your feedback and help..thx alot
Your welcome.. have an awesome day
What if the if it is brown yet but there is a yellow spot on the bottom ? I have one right now like that
Even with the yellow spot you do have to wait till the tendril gets brown.. and I will still wait a few days after the tendrils brown...4-5 days after to harvest..
@@Greentgarden thank you very much !
Your welcome 🌱
I was told to wait til the powder is gone on outside of melon in addition to the tendril being brown then it's perfectly ripe
Well there are many ways to tell if you're watermelon if ripe , and you're right too , there is no wrong way lol .. you could always knock on the melon , if it sounds hollow it's good too... I got it wrong before too , but as I am harvesting more , I'm leaning more about it ... Thanks for watching 💚
why are my vines splitting? maybe a inch or so long in different areas.
The stem splits from the pressure of fast water intake through the roots , Another possible reason for stem split are pests. There are many different bugs that can wreak havoc on all different varieties of plants but there is one that stands out when it comes to identifying the cause of stem splitting... mix soap water or cayenne pepper water and spay it on the vines all over ..
thank you i will try it this evening. i have not seen any pest at all./.
just looking at them 2 or three times a day. this is my first time. i love them. i have 15 little dudes on plants in 4 tires.i have 6 t0 10 foot vines going up homemade trellis . i feel like the foliage is not as heavy and darker green as they should be. yesterday i put some fish fertilizer on them first time. can i add boner meal and blood meal now. can they be ;liquidized to pour over them. thanks for your time. JERRY
@@jerrynunnery7147 blood meal supposed to be good... I heard about fish fertilizer before but I have never tried it before..
Did u stop watering it for a week before ?
Nope , I water every 3-4 days depending on the weather.. I normally do a light pruning and just let the watermelon grow
My grand daughter talked me into planting water melon for her, today I went by these guide lines to pick her first one. Had the yellow spot on the under side and the tentacle was brown and dry. BUT THE MELON WAS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO BEING RIPE! the seeds were even still white! We were very disappointed!
I am so sorry to hear that , that is very strange... Another way to tell it's ripe , You could knock on the watermelon and if it sounds hollow that's what they said is another sign that it's right.. normally I go with the brown tendrils guess it's not always right.. Sorry again Diana , I hope you have more growing on that plant..
Maybe it wasn't pollinated. If they aren't well pollinated or hand pollinated, that could be the issue. Do you have lots of pollinators in your garden?
I hope mine look like that when I cut them open
Me too ! Just make sure your tendril is brown. You got a yellow spot on the bottom and sometimes you could just knock on the watermelon and if it sounds hollow it's good to go..
Did I miss the part where you show how to store the seeds?
Oh not in this video , sorry , this is about how to harvest sugar baby watermelon, but I do have a video on how to store seeds .. I think it was a butternut squash but the same for most seeds .. thanks for watching! 💚
got any videos on a sure fire way of telling when squash is ready?
Sure , what kind of squash are you growing?
I have yellow squash and acorn squash growing...
@@Greentgarden yellow. I picked a couple of them when they was a deep yellow and they weren't ready.
@@jamietimberman689 it's good to harvest when they are 6-8 inches long .. also Press your fingernail through the flesh. If you have to work at it, the squash is ripe; if it's very easy to pierce, the squash is immature
@@Greentgarden ty I'll remember that.
what grow zone are you in?
Zone7a ( NY)
Great info, A new subscriber here.
Awesome, thank you!🌱
@Greentgarden I cut mine open after I saw your video. The tendril was brown. Mine was hanging instead of growing on the ground. So it wasn't as red as yours plus it seemed like it was over ripe. It tasted fermented.
Oh so sorry , next time if the tendril is brown and what to do, you could knock on the watermelon and if it sounds hollow that's another sign it's right ..
watermelons can occasionally pick up a bacteria during the growing process and over time the resulting infection causes the fruit to ferment from the inside-out
@Greentgarden ok thanks that is helpful information for the next time.
Welcome 🙏🏾🌱
What if the tendril is missing
ok let's see , the green color of the watermelon will become dull , the rind will get hard , the blossom end will soften , or try knocking on it ,if sounds hollow its good . ..
How yellow does the patch need to be
So A pale yellow or cream spot indicates ripeness , also check your tendrils, make sure it's brown too .. you could always knock on the melon , if it's ripe ..
@@Greentgarden Thanks for replying! This is my first year growing melons! So one of them have a yellow spot but the tendril probably got cut off when I harvested my onions! They were taking over so I did a pretty rough chop to get my onions out
Oh you're welcome.. oh backyard watermelon 🍉 are the best !!! So if the yellow spots about the size of your palm is a good sign, but give it a couple light knocks , the hollow sound does work , I tried it before.. my watermelon pants are still small here and I can't wait to get some this year ..
@@Greentgarden Awesome! I will probably harvest them tomorrow! The spot is about the size of my hand! I've knocked and they do sound hallow! One was grown vertically so it won't have a yellow spot! Enjoy your watermelons when you get them!
Thank you so much ! So the one that's growing Vertically ,check for the tendrils and do some old school knocking lol it works and enjoy ! 🍉🌱
I had the yellow spot and the tendril brown….it not ready ☹️
Very sorry! That could be due to the weather and stress on the plant.. old school way to check, knocking on the melon, if it sounds hollow it's good to go .... I hope the next one is perfect 🙏!
I don’t have a tendril on mine
Look for the yellow spot on the bottom, The green color becomes dull or Knock on the watermelon. If it sounds hollow it's good to go...
@@Greentgarden I did not know I would get a response so I really appreciate you replying!! I’ll definitely look out for those signs as well! Wish me luck ☺️🤞🏼
That lineup tho
I tried this and when i cut it open it was 1/2 light pink & red...It wasn't ripe I was disappointed but then realized i have 10 more sugar baby growing...LOL!!!!
Lol sorry about that , if that doesn't work , A ripe watermelon should have a deep hollow sound , try knocking on it , old school lol
Just want to make a comdon't eat Watermelon, that that has no seed.
Or any Food that is seedless look it up
MINE IS ONLY SIZE OF A BASEBALL
Nice! Keep up with watering, and add some used coffee grounds... Gives a good boost.. just a small handful to your soil..
@@Greentgarden ok I'll try that, this is my 1st time. Its grown in an 18" round container. I've got 3 melons like i said about baseball size. Thx for the great video
Thank you ! So containers will need a bit more water and organic fertilizer or use coffee Grounds or fresh soil every 2 weeks , always try to water in the morning if you can , if your soil looks too dry or the The leaves are wilting over , means it needs water ... Thank you for watching! Keep me updated.. I will do an update on my watermelon video soon ..
