This actually makes me want to get Pokémon again. I haven't played a Pokémon since Black and White so I've been out of the fight for a while
If you play the game for the substance and difficulty, that gets mostly dropped in X, Y, Sun, and Moon in favor of more presentational aspects of the game. Trust me; Gens 4 and 5 are as good as it gets.
What @Mettaton Ex , is saying is basically what most of the fandom has been saying for the past years.
But it's up to you if you want to play the games for whatever reason that may be. Difficulty, substance, Pokemon design, characters, story, or just like turn based RPG in general. Whatever your reason may be, it's a valid reason.
Just don't involve yourself with the Pokemon Fandom in general, because right now they might annoy you more than welcome you.

did i hear that right? either you haven't played the other gens, or just don't think they can compete against the 2 most earliest, and worst gens. 3 was something else, 4 was the best, 5 is fucking amazing, 6 is alright (people make it out to be the worst thing ever, but its not) and 7 is pretty good. watching the end discussion and all i have to say is, an action based pokemon game is a bad idea, turn based is more realistic and more strategy where as action isn't and is a rush, have you guys seen sword and shield stuff yet? at all? open world, raid battles, other trainers to fight alongside. you can battle other trainers too, it's called online mode, you can make a speedy snorlax, have you heard of natures and iv's/ev's? iv/evs i can understand not knowing, but everything else i feel like you should know if you're a pokemon fan. also, the pokemon spin offs are bad, fight me. they did try a new thing, mega evolution, z moves, no gym leaders, you guys need to play gen 7/6. 7 changed the formula of facing gym leaders
And that's why Chikorita is one of the worst/least favorite starter... For being a Nark.
Also, that other form of Gloom is called Bellossom (First appeared in Generation II). It's a second choice evolution for Gloom, when using a Sun Stone on it to evolve, instead of using a Leaf Stone for Vileplume.
Like how Poliwhirl can evolve to either Poliwrath (Using a Water Stone), or Politoed (When traded, while holding a King's Rock; also, a new form that first appeared in Generation II). Or Kirlia evolving to either Gardevoir (At Level 30), or Gallade (Using a Dawn Stone, but can only work on Male Kirlia).

I stopped at Pokemon gen 5 black and white and now I really wanna play Pokemon again.
Closest thing for 3d was thr pokemon stadium games (vaguely remember em) prefered the handhelds but the mini games in stadium were fun
Collosseum. It was were my love for Umbreon and Teddiursa came from.
I think Nintendo is afraid of how poorly a completely different Pokémon game would go and they prefer to play it safe.
ShadowL Drago Nintendo has no say in it. The most Nintendo has is the ability to keep the console games exclusive.

Here's a fun little question. What would be your ideal real life pokemon team? To make it interesting, no legendaries, mythicals, or otherwise god-like, one-of-a-kind pokemon and, since this is a team for traveling, you need one that you can somewhat feasibly ride on in the air and one in the water, so no flying on little baby birds or the like. You can have Mega pokemon if you like, though I think it makes sense to limit those to just one.

All pokemon I like. Except for Lapras would be fairly small and therefore not eat too much. (I'd prob go for something different if you didn't state water travel.)
Perhaps some arent the strongest of pokemon but there is a decent type mix

Actually, no matter how much I love gen 2 and how much it means to me as the first ever Pokemon game I've played(Gold), I have to disagree with you. While it does introduce an handfull of very cool pokemon, some of which are my favourite in the series, it is not the best gen, by far. The story is mediocre at worst and ok at best, and the region itself is pretty boring,plus it introduces almost no new pokemon to the series, most pokemon in gen 2 are old ones or evolutions or pre-evolutions for old ones. The only things it's got going for it is the music and the fact you can travel back to Kanto. The absolute best gen in the series is 5. It introduced the largest amount of cool features, has a sick soundtrack, fantastic story that has never been done and hasn't been done ever again in the history of the series and it is the most difficult gen in the entire series, besides the broken af gen 1.
