You don't need more subwoofers, obviously the answer is for your room to become the subwoofer itself and you should put your speakers inside the room which is a subwoofer. As such the distance from the sub would always be 0, meaning maximum tactility.

There's an article on the Ken Rockwell site about why you need stereo subwoofers. Shakers attached to the seat of drummers for better bass monitoring do exist.

@@Sharur1 Not all records have perfect mono bass under 80 Hz and directivity can be perceived if placed correctly. In serious studios are definitely used. We don't need a lot of things, but the difference can be heard.

@@Sharur1 mmmmhh... In mixing studios, ok, even though I've seen 2.2 systems. In Multichannels, definitely ok. But what about mastering studios? Bob Ludwig uses 2 massive towers for example. That's like saying that a 2.1 system is always superior to a pair of full towers.
Subs are naively thought of as low-end extenders but their most useful effect is to control/smooth-out room modes ; hence the placement should ideally be for that purpose. One sub will give you some omnidirectional low-end extension but as soon as you have a second sub, you can start to delve into room mode modelling. You can used REW to model the precise effect based on position, phase and crossover point. Proper placement of subs can help one diminish the amount of room treatment needed . Dipole subs are the most interesting in that respect. Have you ever heard a pair of Linkwitz 521 ? It's a different world altogether. It's also the reason Genelec The Ones have these massive subs underneath speakers that already have tremendous bass response.

This will create a planar pressure wavefront that travels longitudinally to the room's length; the bass comes "at" you from the front and vanishes with no reverberation, as if in a free field.

in room, 1 seat, 2-3 subs is good enough, as well as butt kicker shakers attached to the base of your chair, and footrest - like crawsons.
1 or 2 subs stacked in height in the corner for corner loading of SPL and infrasonic duties and getting the 6db of coupling when stacked, helping below 20 hz.
1 sub nearfield, behind you, for tactility.

The whole harman paper is catered to pseudo pro wanna be home cinemas with 2 rows of seating. TBH those pro seudo in room cinemas get used probably 1 time in the year for its intended purpose, and you sacrifice the performance at the MLP for the greater performance of all seats.

guess you never felt sensurround ! i have and i thou in later years in late 80's projectionist for CIC/UCI cinemas tower park , and lastly with warner bros late 90's and now to day i'm retired and i know what to look for , listen for and feel regards movie music soundtracks
sensurrond in mid 70's to late 70's only lasted few years for few movies , earthquake 70mm six track mag , was an event ! saw that four to five times that played for months !
Dolby stereo was better when that came about with introduction of baby boom 1977 for star wars and close encounters in selected 70mm cinemas rest only heard 35mm optical that can use sub bass extension but won't play the discrete baby boom that is reserved for 70mm
THX sound system enhanced substandard Dolby cinemas and wow was that what i was missing on the soundtrack with low frequencies that i felt on chest or stomach at , the world famous CIC Empire Leicester Square , london , the JBL THX was out of this world for large premiere auditorium , indiana jones and the last crusade 70mm six track Dolby Stereo format 43 split surrounds , baby boom when that played with the LCR that used lots of bass cabs and HF horns loud exciting without need for earplugs , seen all the star trek movies in one day 70mm THX and that was wow , i can easily memorize sound , the star trek marathon , sunday 8th oct 1989 , many other 35mm SR and dts at Empire 1
also CIC high wycombe which was first THX cinema in the uk 1987 and was voted 8th best THX cinema on the planet ! the bass sub bass , feels like laying on the bed and cats paws pressing into your body ! it was just like that ! out of this world and the setting it up tuning EQ of it all still a mystery , same cinema supplier installer that did the Empire refit in 1989 ready for indiana jones that was mixed on original THX dub stage and partly at skywalker ranch which was still being built
original THX dub stage no longer exists which was part of ILM 32 ten that was closed down last year 2023
THX JBL professional you never experienced it your too young , you missed that boat ! the cinemas today are atrocious sounding with atmos !
bring back the vintage THX/TAP program but all are now retired , Tom Holman isn't all pleased with westwood village cinema l.a . , as he mentioned to me , to day there are very few THX cinemas worldwide until somewhere around late 90's it came unhinged ?
the Empire removed its original THX and later few years in around 2006 2007 had new THX JBL install but something was missing with regards to the stage bass channels and it sounded rather toppy where i had to use earplugs ! due to horns MF and HF , what they got it tuned for a bat !
it was okay , Empire no longer exists anymore split up for a rubbish sound system called LieMax the fake imax brand !
cinemas in the uk now sound atrocious ! its like the 1970's all over again m sigh , deafening dBA unsafe , earplugs i have to ware and bass is rubbish , sub bass rubbish , yeah sure it booms now and then but , BH2 odeon bournemoth screen 10 atmos ain't anywhere near or close to Empire 89 JBL THX or CIC high wycombe
bass in my private JBL THX cinema feels with correct theatrical laserdisc mixes feels like an air buster that is felt ! nearly all youtube home theatres have trinnov , i know what that processor can and cant do , the stormaudio with a very complex B-chain to explain it would go over your head , my THX cinema can do all the classic Dolby format codes thou its integrated with Dolby Stereo CP200 regarded as best cinema processor made , 1980 and are still in use at selected cinemas , bfi imax cinema , london when they use it for regular 70mm five perf or 35mm optical or rare 35mm mag
my system , 27 .19 . 2/4/6/8 has bass shakers more than most home theates around and many other special modifications where i can duplicate , CIC UCI tower park , experimental overhead surround , yes 1989 , overheads have been in use even since 1969 cinerama 70mm local odeon down town , ice station zebra used it , and i heard , star wars day 1 ! with the classic opening star destroyer !
experimental overhead not to be confused with atmos , i have special switcher box and wiring that is complex to explain , i hardly play atmos discs now , there just near field mixes , its back to theatrical mixes on lasrdisc or maybe odd rare dvd's , but nearly all blu and 4k are near field , waste of time

If you can hear your subs, your crossover is set too high. Subs should be felt not heard. My single Klipsch R-115SW is crossed over at 50Hz. Any higher frequency and it starts to become directional. I have wood floors above a 5 foot deep crawl space in my listening room and this single sub rattles the windows. The best part is you can't tell where the bass is coming from.
bring the subwoofer deeper into the room and get closer to it and you will hear it
