Les Paul is in frame for 0.3 seconds
Me: Is that a rosewood fingerboard on a custom?
Right..
Yea, the rosewood really sticks out. Not my cup of tea when going for a Custom.
@@user-tz2zz5ij1s Yea same... if that was mine I'd ebony stain it.
@@RÅNÇIÐ no you wouldnt
@@RÅNÇIÐ That would be peak stupid. Sell it and buy a new one, don't fuck up a perfectly good product - and plummet its resale value - just because "muh ebunyz"
“I love the Guitar”. That is the only thing that matters.
Totally true
💯 right.
You are 100% correct.
Dude, yes, 💯

Somewhere out there Trogly is creaming his pants.
I was gonna comment....I wonder what Trogly thinks of this.
My first thought when I saw this video was 'send it to Trogly...'
Lol we all thought the same thing. Dude is starting to become the go to for Gibson.
Was just thinking the same thing!
Send to Trogoly!
maduro literally translates to "mature" from Spanish. In cigar terms, it's used for darker leaves of tobacco, most typically wrapper leaves. (the outer most leaf that a cigar is wrapped in.) source: I used to work for a cigar company. Now I really want one of these LPs.
"We don't make mistakes, just happy little accidents." - Bob Ross
The rosewood really stands out!
In a bad way imo
@@chrismccreight8207 hate to hafta agree..
I would stain it black.
Baked maple.
Man even though it's not what you searched for at first, however that guitar is more like a 'custom' custom les paul and surely is a unique beauty
Gibson mysteries never get old...love it !!!!!!!
These were made around the time Gibson got raided for the illegal ebony they supposedly had. There were a lot of rosewood or maple fingerboard guitars built in that time cause all the ebony they had was confiscated. Ebony made a comeback and rosewood was scarce for a bit with the cites laws put in place around the same time. Gibson had to do those stacked rosewood fingerboards in 2012 on their models because of those laws (can't see it on a standard or custom LP cause of the binding but look at a custom shop Jr from 2012 and you can see the line of the stacked board). Kinda a weird time all around for guitar manufacturing.
I recently purchased a 1992 black "studio" with gold hardware and ebony fret board. I got it home and inspected it and the body cavities are UGLY! Turns out it is a studio lite finished from the factory as a studio. So I ended getting a one of a kind factory freak for a really good price!
It's a work tool, so what it delivers onstage and in studio is first priority, but it being a distinctive color and having a distinctive fingerboard is just frosting on the cake!
My 1983 Les Paul Custom Shop Studio Custom has a rosewood fretboard.
Absolutely love it!!
Fluff: Avoid Les Pauls from 05-18.
Buys a 12.
Not on purpose!
@@RiffsAndBeards LOLz. Looks like it worked out just fine anyway🤘
@@RiffsAndBeardsthe main quality issues ive found in the 05-18 models seem to be mostly that the high e string got caught in the gap between the fret and the fret "nib" as they call it. Which is basically where the binding meets the frets ( im sure you probly know that.) some have it worse than others. have a 16 and its awesome. congrats man
Just because Gibsons have seen a huge deep in overall quality and QC in this time period (and I've seen a lot of horrors too) doesn't mean you can't find good ones, it means you have to try first. If it's good, it's good
@@the_hippykiller22 I completely agree. My first ever Gibson LP was actually an 05 with a Headstock break and I still love it.
I'm a fan of ambiguous colors like this, especially oxblood.
Started with my fascination with Abe Cunningham and his "bone blue" (aka not white) kit during the White Pony era.
Hard to choose between this and your satin PRS. 😍
@@filippop.6172 Ah, that's right. Good call.
I remember seeing this model back then when I was searching for my 1st bucket list Gibson Les Paul Custom and decided against for lack of ebony fingerboard. Settled on 57' spec TV Silver instead. Congrats on the purchase!
It looks exactly like my Tokai LC85. Black beauty with rosewood fretboard. I prefer ebony on Customs but I got used to it and love mine. Enjoy!
Just bought a 2008 black Les Paul Custom with ebony fretboard for $2500. Super clean with the OHSC and case candy. Patience is key!
Ya, a lot of Customs out there with rosewood boards. For me, It was also a bucket list guitar, but I wanted a black custom with an ebony board. So it's all about what you want.
Cherish that beauty, I bought my first Gibson Les Paul Custom Figured Custom Shop last year, mine has a richlite fretboard but it’s absolutely incredible, it was a bucket list check for me as well. I have changed out the caps to orange drops. It’s my favorite over all mine.
If I was in the same situation, and the guitar I bought turned out to not be exactly what I thought it was, but was still exactly what I was looking for, I'd be ecstatic. You got one hell of a deal on one hell of a guitar, and in the end, it's exactly what you were looking for. Very cool.
Today on Roof, Spears and Gear ~CZcams Captions
I have a Maduro, and it's awesome. I bought it because of the colour and rosewood board though, so knew what it was at the time. I didn't expect to love it this much, but it's taken over from my PRS's at my favourite.
don't know why anyone would even want to upgrade a gibson custom ..they sound and play so well right from the get go.
I bought a Black guitar from an online music shop in Germany.
(No.. Not Thomann)
I was happy to find it at a good price, because it was discontinued,
completely sold out in the UK.
Safely delivered, I unpacked it, and the guitar was actually obviously dark blue.
So looked again at the photo on the shops website,
but this time harder and for longer..
Yes.. Blue, not black...
There's probably a reason for colour balance controls on PC monitors...???
I did recognize the maduro Les Paul in only one second! I had a crush for some time on the maduro LP, because there was one on Ebay for 2.300 Euros. But the thing is: Back in 2012 they not only changed to rosewood for fingerboards, it is a 2 piece veneer instead of a solid one piece. Gibson didn´t made a secret out of this fact and it´s all in the product sheed.
Nuts to sending that back! That thing is WAY cooler than than "regular" black LP Custom.
My main dream guitar of many is a Gibson Les Paul custom silver burst 1979. Either still silver or that awesome zombie green they tend to turn into.
As the song goes:
"You can't always get what you want
. But if you try sometimes, well, you might find, You get what you need"
You're happy with it and that's all that's important.
Similar story with my Schecter, bought remotely this year due to lockdowns.
Thought it was a good deal on a trans-black, 2012 Hellraiser Extreme Solo 6 - but it arrived as a set neck rather than a neck-through.
But everything else matched - 4 control knobs, flamed maple fretboard, TonePro's bridge, abalone binding etc.
Sleuthing ensued -
Found out it's a prototype - EMG 81/60 instead of the EMG 81/89R and a few other detail changes.
Made in South Korea.
While not what I wanted (still on the hunt for a production one) - this feels and plays great and is likely extremely rare as only a handful may have been made.
I wonder if Michael Ciravolo may have had a play on it at some point.
No idea how it got here as I'm in Australia.
Found an old setlist in the gig bag it came in - so, like yours, this thing has been played and has the dings to prove it.
I do very much love it - and even managed to find a new-old-stock Schecter case for it.
it sounds so good! the parts get along so it’s well built. i wouldn’t get rid of it for nothing.
I have a 1995 Epiphone LP Custom that inexplicably has a Gibson body and electronics.....but the numbers match. Nobody tell Trogly.
Rosewood fretboard on a Custom...never saw it before ! But Gibson built so many quirks over time !!!
You should send the story of this guitar to Mary Spender. She has a show about guitars with special stories. My favorite CZcams guitar show at the moment
That ain’t a special story tho. Lots of rosewood customs out there. People hate Richlite
Glad it worked out! I am a total nerd for ebony, but no fretboard is better than a guitar that feels great with a fun story behind it
I agree. I don't play guitar much, but I have many guitars on my bucket list, and a LP Custom is in my top 5. I want an older 70-80s. Trogly made me fall in love with the Norland era
This thing rips. First thing I noticed was the lighter fretboard. Sick guitar
You could presumably use the serial number checker on Gibson's site.
Possibly (but doubtfully), it could even be a 'proper' custom, by that, I mean a privately ordered guitar.
Until relatively recently, it was possible to order weapons of choice with custom specs from Gibson, I believe this only stopped with the 'recent' acquisition of G.
That is a great story. I'm Les Paul Custom guy and did not notice it was a rosewood fretboard till you mentioned it. Great video. btw, your guitar sounds fantastic.
7:14 thats the only thing that matters! Not to mention you have a killer story to tell about it!
As soon as you showed the scratches and things I blurted out its wine red.I was wrong but look at it it looks wine red sometimes.I like it.
When I first saw this LPC it made me think of the 2012 Gibson Les Paul Classic Custom in Wine Red I owned for about a year in 2012. Those models had baked maple boards (that I loved) during the wood shortage they were going through as you mentioned. Love the story behind this LPC.
That cut from where it's melancholy soft music to you smashing out The New Black by ETD was priceless 😂. Awesome band by the way, one of my all time favorites. Those dudes are touring MONSTERS. Them playing the last song of the last set of the last Warped Tour EVER and ending it with Map Change will forever be one of those moments that make me wanna cry like a giant man baby lol. They had to basically start taking the stage down around them to stop. So fvcked up....
I 100% get the bucket list thing. A couple years ago I got a 2011 Custom Shop LP8 58 Reissue on a crazy deal. It is LITTERALLY the most amazing guitar I've ever played.
On the Gibson collection channel , Slash talks about having one made , almost identical to that one . Saying the rosewood fingerboard was warmer then the ebony .
My thing with mint 60s guitars, is that the owner was probably drafted and killed not long after getting it.
What a happy thought!!!! 😳
Brown, black , 2002 or 2012
It sounds amazing and that sustain is insane..”
Long term I would guess that Madura custom will be worth more than if it were a regular black beauty. Not to mention you have a unique guitar which is pretty cool.
Throw a TP6 tail on it .you will be glad you did! It's a factory Gibson part and great upgrade..and it will give your wore out tuners a big-time break.. if you want to keep the stock tuners going. All my Tune-O-Matic bridge guitars have them. Makes tuning SOOO much easier!
slash have a black beauty with rosewood fredboard
I recently got my Dream les Paul custom, also very played. It has many dings and wear but I love that it has history and I won’t be so precious about bumping it every now and again. Great guitar dude, enjoy!
I have never thought about the condition of a second hand guitar being a clue to how well it plays. It is so true, I bought a beat up Yamaha nxt900fm on eBay for £300 and it sounds amazing!
That brown finish makes it even cooler IMO, also sick ETID riff!
Gotta love a good story behind a guitar 🤘🏼
That's a "Joe Bonamassa" guitar. Meaning, it's now a guitar with a cool story. 🤘🥴
I owned a 2012 Maduro brown LP Custom. Amazing guitar. Neeeever should have gotten rid of it.
What an amazing Axe. Love the deep brown finish. This was a really great video Fluff, thank you for sharing and keep us in the know about what things to look for and what to ask when searching for great gear!
Congrats on the guitar. I have one too and love mine.
To make a long story short, I had an ‘86 LP custom black with chrome finish (white binding, white MoP headstock and inlays - so made that way) that was stolen. I was on the hunt for another this year but prices obviously were insane. Then I ran across the Maduro with chrome! It plays exactly like my old Gibson and actually sounds better (I think the pickups are better) and I didn’t need to pay an insane markup for a custom.
I love stories like this. When an instrument has a back story and history, it makes it feel alive. Very cool guitar.
those etid riffs, man... instant headbanging
New black babyyyy
I bought a used Jeep once. I only test drive it at night, and only ever saw it under dealer lot streetlights, and thought it was black. When I woke up the next morning and looked at it in the sun, it looked purple. Like a super dark eggplant. After some digging in the car, I found a Maaco paint shop tag in the back, meaning the Jeep was likely re-painted. So I did some more digging to find places that Maaco wouldn't have painted, and found that it was hot pink underneath. It turns out the Jeep was originally a limited-edition, dealer exclusive hot pink, and it was re-painted with a shitty black paint job. So shitty, that it didn't totally block all of the hot pink, so it looked purple in the sun. Once I put those pieces together, I LOVED that thing. When I traded it in, the dealer asked me the color, and I called it "Satan's Plums", and that's how they listed it in the local AutoTrader print out/magazines. :)
"the new black" I see what you did there.
I love that it's not quite the typical black LP custom.
2012 Customs generally have a Richlite fretboard (not ebony), so you may or may not see that as a win. However, 2012 rosewood fretboards are laminated, and it's not 100% clear how these go with a refret. Time will prove.
And it is always cool to get a limited run Gibson(A model that fell through the cracks being as most people do not know about them). Congrats on the purchase.
I inherited my fathers 1980(?) Les Paul Custom in a Cherry Red finish. I'm a drummer not a guitar player so I have no idea how it sounds in comparison to other les paul guitars or even what it's worth, all I know is that it was my old mans pride and joy and I never want to sell it.
Everybody wants ebony on LP Customs but I like the brown interesting rosewood grains on Epi LP Customs. Ebony sounds spankier in the upper mids i prefer rounder rosewood tones.
No offense but a black beauty custom les Paul is super common on the “bucket list” guitars for a lot of people. This thing, is rare, plays great, looks just as good, and now has an awesome story. You did good.
Hi, I have the same guitar except nickel hardware VOS, it plays good, bought new in 2013. Love the guitar.
Well, you wanted a les paul custom, not sure which direction to go. Purchased one, ended up with the perfect guitar by mistake. And the awesome story to go with it. It's like this one was found its way to you. It was meant to be. Congrats on the awesome new guitar!
I like the colour. I could see it immediately but missed the rosewood. cool. polish it up once for us please.
Lol the first thing I thought, “I thought those particular Les Paul Customs come with an ebony board”. Then you crossed that path. Also appreciate you playing Everytime I Die
I was in guitar center today, and stumbled upon this line 6 spyder, and it had YOUR preset on it and I fell in love with the tone! Not a bad amp for 320!
you got a neat story and rad guitar and free channel content; triple win
Like the oxblood finish, it looks black but is not!
i have a mij charvel like that, looks black, but up close in light ,you can see its a sort of brown burgundy
I like the rosewood.
The light color contrasts nice compared to ebony which is more hidden.
You have a one year, one of a kind LP. Dont matter its not a black beauty. It has history and now you have a story. That too makes for a great a great guitar.
Not sure if you even would have been as happy ending up with a Gibson Black Beauty from 2002, lower frets, chunkier neck and PAF's.
I really like the color on the one you got there, looks more like a dark red/purple (burgundy?) than brown, weird that the previous owner didn't realize that it wasn't black with stage lighting.
Wicked axe! I have a black 1974 Les Paul custom, have had it since 1985. I had a brother add a middle pickup years ago, and the neck has been totally redone. I love this guitar, and I have played many shows with it. Great video!!! I have subscribed!!
Just got the les paul custom ebony. Turns up tomorrow! Very very excited!
I remember when they released the line, I was young and could not afford it. I really wanted it since I say someone play with it and he was so proud. rosewood vs Ebody, it's just a color, really. most of my favourite guitars had the weirdest guitars ever, they modified them and changed them. some of the took really cheap parts and assembled something while putting stickers on them.... It's all about the sound and feel. a great guitar is a great guitar no matter who makes them. I have LP CS R6, best Les Paul ever (underhanded pickups) and I have a LP standard which is the best R9 I ever heard and I tried a lot of them. be happy with your purchase :)
The reason for the rosewood is due to legal obligations with using ebony wood with US laws around the 2010s if I remember correctly
Now the guitar has even more of an endearing story, is more unique than a regular custom, and you love it. Win-win-win
that's a really cool accident. having something rare seems way more interesting. it's an odd piece of history and you get to tell a story. and you like the sound and feel, so it's a win all around.
This. Exactly!
Love guitar stories. We all have them. Awesome guitar Fluff!!
Congratulations! Nice Paul! Yes, Gibson did make some Customs with rosewood fretboards. I learned that a few years ago myself.
I was gonna say ... at the right angle it almost looked like it had a oxblood finish to it.
But glad it turned out good for you !! It does look & sound nice !! :)
Black Beauty has always been one of my dreams, a brown one that looks black is pretty awesome! Enjoy that gorgeous beast man!! Cheers!
I understand your point on great shape old guitars but I have another option as it is true in my case. I own almost 20 6 string guitars but I am a bass player first and drummer second. I SUCK at guitar but still buy them because I love how they look and I consider them artwork. I have a few that sound fantastic when real guitarists friends play them (my Hagstrom Super Swede, my Les Paul Modern, come to mind) but they look nearly pristine because they don't get played enough. So it isn't always that they sound crappy or weren't liked but maybe some of us as a guitarist suck and the guitar is loved just not utilized. It's true, this bass player is a failed guitarist 😁
i agree shiny old guitars are suspect.....
Bro, he knew. Rosewood boards on real Gibson LP Customs are few and far between, it's the first thing I noticed from the first moment I even saw that guitar in the video. The seller definitely knew.
The rosewood fretboard stood out to me straight away, gorgeous guitar.
Baked maple.
This is great!! Love a good guitar story! Fluff, you should for sure do more guitar stories!
Pretty cool backstory. Easy enough to confuse 2012 with 2002, Gibson serial numbers are dumb.
Cool guitar! Love the ETiD Riff!
Holy shit I just purchased a guitar like that one last week only mine wasn't a Maduro it was an ebony Les Paul with a rosewood fretboard and I absolutely love it!
They went for $1899 brand new. I rememberi looking at them back then and liking them very much.
This reminds me of buying my LP Standard last year. I did a ton of research and decided the ebony board was important to me but didn't have the money for a custom. I found a run of weird finishes Gibson did in 2004 with Ebony fingerboards on standards and ended up buying one in in Pacific Burst which is sort of a light teal flame maple top with a very dark teal on the back of the body and neck. I also ended up having a chibson scare because of a small detail I did not notice beforehand and it has an undisclosed finish issue from a nut replacement on the treble side around the nut, but the guitar plays and sounds great otherwise.
Guitar looks great! Better than a black one, im partial to the alpine myself
I think the rosewood board compliments the finish really well. Sounds great too. Jealous of your new purchase!!
The New Black is my favorite riff everrrrr. And perfectly placed in the video ;)
Nice I have a triple pickup with a bigsby custom historic art collection Gibson LPC and love it my pops bought it for me after 3 years of lessons it is a 57 black beauty reissue
very first thing I noticed was the fingerboard....and the ETID riff was nice...such a sick band...love the channel bro...solid content
