- Most tourists walk away from London with at least one exterior shot of the famous clock tower. But during our April 2012 visit to England, Channel 13 did something few Americans ever get to do. Photographer Steve Rhodes went on a behind-the-scenes tour usually only given to British citizens to get a close look at the chimes.

From top to the foundation The Clock Tower is a "Work Of Art"
Bugger me. Why wasn't I born in England? That clock mechanism is something I'll never get to see :(. Shame really because it's a very fascinating piece of engineering. Supposedly it's only stopped a half dozen times or so. The worst was when a governor failed and caused the whole mechanism to destroy itself. What we're seeing in this video is actually an accurately rebuilt replica.
Not quite, actually -- it was mostly the chime train that got destroyed, plus the cast iron frame cracked -- you can google up some pictures taken of the damage. They had a spare escapement in the Parliament cellar which has been sitting there since the days the original clock maker was experimenting with it so eventually the clock was ticking again. It did take a long time to repair -- yes, but it's still the same mechanism.
EDIT: I did mean to say escapement, not governor.

@@amywarren4309 One of those things, you don't know what you have until you lost it. I wish with all my heart to see the inside of the clock, but I can't because I'm not a UK resident. Yet you are a resident and probably have never been inside.
There are more or less two mechanisms - the main clock, and the one that does the quarter chimes (and possibly the hour bongs, I'm not sure). It was the latter that failed (I think causing weights to plummet, and thus the drum that held the cables to spin fast and eventually leave its mountings and crash into the rest). The basic timepiece frame mostly survived.

Doesnt adding a coin slow it down (because it becomes heavier) and removing it speed it up?
The speed of a pendulum depends on its length (pivot-point to centre of mass), not it's weight. If the penny is added above the centre of mass then it would effectivly shorten the pendulem, speeding it up.

It can, it makes a sound of 120 decibels. A human ear can't take that sound. The vibrations are so big that your ear drums can't take it, so it causes them to break. Besides, it's loud enough as it is outside. Ive been in there a couple weeks ago.

I´d like to know why the process of the coins is necessary ?
The clock doesn't keep perfect time, so as needed they add or remove weight from the pendulum to adjust it back to the correct time. For example, if they find it is a few seconds fast they'll remove a coin and slow it down until it's back to the correct time.

Yep, the bell is the 2nd one cast as the first one cracked beyond repair while it was being tested before it was hung in the tower as the tower was still being built
