- I love the rustic charm of the greenhouse on a Friday evening after a busy week in the day job. As the sun dips below the horizon, I’ll walk you through the weekend’s to-do list talking through our "work in progress" self-sufficient vegetable garden. These garden tasks are the honest work that keeps our homestead thriving. Sit back and hopefully gain some inspiration to get in to your garden and join me in celebrating the simple joys of countryside living. Every moment is a step towards self-sufficiency.
I just love your vegetable garden. Getting raised bed, polytunnel and greenhouse envy.😀. I think the best way to watch your vlogs is with a glass a red, so you most certainly have the right idea when giving a tour of the garden, watching what you have done so far. All looks fantastic. Please it up.
How kind of you, thank you. Haha fantastic on the red!
Try Extra Early Wight garlic, I've just lifted mine on Wednesday, planted in October, lovely big bulbs.
Honeysuckle pink and cream varieties also known as Strawberries and Cream Honeysuckle. You can make cordials, syrups and jellies from the flowers. I love the cream and lemon scented ones the best as their perfume is extraordinary. You can also dry the flowers for homemade potpourri, and I believe use them in teas also x
Thanks Tricia! I didn't know that, though the bees seem to firmly own this one. I like to idea of the dried flowers too. xx
It’s all go isn’t it! Everything’s looking great. I suggested a Friday night red wine in the greenhouse to my neighbour so I won’t be sat on my own now 😂
Oooh tell me when and where 😂
Yes, I think that's honeysuckle Tracy 🙂
The consensus has it!
You could take cuttings of the rosemary plant they root easy in water.
I always forget to do this! Thanks for the reminder. I need to see what else I can do this with - even for fun!
Somebody needs to be up very early tomorrow and get stuck in , lot to do there . The big bush over the shed is called Honeysuckle , lovely sweet smell on a summer's evening and it attracts plenty of bees , and we certainly need them don't we ?
Look after those Artichokes or I'll be up there 😂😂😂
The bees love it, thanks for the name too. Pride of place for the artichokes lol
😂😂 I’m allowed to use the push mower but not the ride on 😮 how rude. But it’s great for mounding up spuds too. It was supposed to be June but it’s been insanely cold and wet here. 13:32 grow more wine 🍷 great plan it’s called a vineyard 🍇🍇🍇🤣 the arch above you 16:15 would make a perfect grape arch. Mine too broad beans winter 👎 spring 👍. Honeysuckle is amazing 😻. Fab video as always Tracy have a fantastic week, Ali 🌧️🇨🇦
Haha the ride on is a little "rustic" for the back garden, it takes chunks out when it feels like it. What will you do broad bean wise this year Ali? Thank you :)
Hi, Your garden is looking great 😍 I’ve had some bother with my garlic too and ended up lifting a row. To be fair the bulbs weren’t too bad but the scapes were only just starting to develop on them so have missed a treat by pulling early. My others which are growing in another part of the garden are doing really well. They should be ready around mid July all being well of course. Lol your comment at the end. I’m sure you gain more than you lose and I for one love seeing how your beautiful garden is growing, even the flowers 😂
Thank you Gaynor. I'm going to lift that garlic outside over the next couple of weeks I think - after the dodgy onion bed as I didn't get to that yet. So yes, I'm not sure I'll make it to mod/end July for the garlic. Ahhh thank you lovely! Even the flowers 😂
Hi Tracey , as others have said that is honeysuckle you have growing.. it looks like the serotina variety..
Thank You!
Hey there. Wow with your peppers and chilies! Well done with your shed. Hope you got all your projects successfully sorted this weekend.
Did your French tarragon return this spring?
Atb.
I am so pleased with the peppers etc this year. Outside not so much but all learning. Ready for next weekend but video coming soon to follow this last one. Also a bit of a tour though I feel i was all over the place filming it 😂 Well! There's a story there! Yes it did. And then Steven happened! i'll show you actually on Friday - not all is lost.
Honeysuckle is the climber. great vid. Not sure if I will grow garlic again. None of the amish tomatoes have grown this year :-( No loofah either.
Sorry to hear that - that's sad to hear. Thank you re the climber.
we call them honey suckle😊
Now I've caught up with the videos can i stomp my feet and ask for more 😂😂😂
I'm going to try and "make" a slug collar from old plastic pots... who knows if that's going to work.
It doesn't feel like we've had a summer yet but I'm looking Goats to seeing what you do with the Amish paste tomatoes. My garlic is due to come up any day now... fingers crossed I've got something salvageable. Keep up the good work x
I’d be interested to see how that works out! Good luck. Summer has definitely arrived here which is lovely to see. The Amish paste tomatoes will definitely be for winter preserving. Obviously, I’ll show you this 😂 Have you got your garlic up yet? We’re taking ours up today.
@OurSmallholdingAdventure i took some samples yesterday...elephant look good...rhapsody and carcassone were small but had usable cloves... the wight on the other hand looked like a large spring onion... don't know if its going to be usable? The dilemma now is I'm going on holiday early July and bit sure I'll have time to process them so do i leave until i get back? Any suggestions on long term storage... considering confit the cloves and sore in oil....
I think it's one of those years where we can't base decisions for next year on listening to what a few folk are experiencing, same for us it looks like. I am going to roast some and freeze or you could just freeze if stuck for time? Be good to hear what you decide.
@OurSmallholdingAdventure I've researched confit garlic and it seems to only store for about 3 weeks so will freeze what harvested so far and leave the rest in the ground until i get back from holiday... the rest of this week I'm frantically going to be harvesting the soft fruit...raspberries, strawberries gooseberries and all the currents 😬
My wife is making rhubarb infused gin as we got alot of it from our garden
Ohhh we do this - sooo lovely.
I'm going to be getting a polytunnel in the near future and wondered how big yours is for reference 🤔
Sorry for the late reply! No problem, this poly tunnel was bought cheaply off eBay but has lasted really well and is 6 m x 3 m. Hope that helps!
@@OurSmallholdingAdventure that's brilliant, thanks 😁 i'm hoping to get a 4m x 3m one but i'm currently battling with running bamboo where it will be going!!!😞
@@catpurple7 best of luck!
Hi. Are your carrots OK outside with carrot fly?
Not unless they’re covered so the uncovered ones will be used early and fresh and the covered ones will hopefully last through winter
