In this video, we're breaking down the good, the bad, and the downright frustrating when it comes to modern car gadgets.
First up, let's talk about the annoyances. Ever found yourself wrestling with a touchscreen just to adjust the climate controls? Or felt like you needed a tech degree to navigate through a mess of apps while you're supposed to be focusing on the road? Yeah, it's a struggle. We'll dig into why some tech can feel like more of a hindrance than a help.
But fear not! There's plenty to love about today's driving tech, especially for your everyday commute. From customizable screens that turn your dashboard into a command center to easy access to all the info you need right at your fingertips, it's like having a personal assistant in the driver's seat.
And for those adrenaline junkies who live for speed, we've got some serious game-changers to talk about. Think automatic rev-matching, adaptive suspension systems, and electronically adjustable brake pedals - these features aren't just cool, they're essential when you're tearing up the track. And keeping an eye on vital stats like tire temperature? That could be the difference between victory and defeat.

I think the worst part is manufacturers placing the climate control system in the screens instead of physical buttons. This becomes a night mare especially if your infotainment starts to lag or stutter and then you have to switch off and restart the car in order to refresh the system .

Yeah for example I had a courtesy car which was a new plate Citroën, while using it I had a call come up on the screen via android auto but my ac was on max so a lot of fan noise. I answered the call, but then had to navigate off my maps to the climate screen which lagged for a second and turn the fan speed down. In this time I couldn't hear what my caller was saying

One other thing I absolutely hate about modern cars is the lack of a physical handbrake lever. I've had a couple of incidents where it helped correcting understeer (was driving a civic with shitty tires on snow/rain, skidding into oncoming traffic and very little time to react. I instinctively gave the handbrake a gentle tap, enough to point the car back to the direction I want it to go.)

said it for years.. as a comparison. the aviation industry spent millions, or probably more likely billions, on researching how pilots interface witht he aircraft. and ultimiatly decided is was better, less stres full and less distracting to have certain things remain button or switch operated. the car industry however, spent 10 mins to decide it was cheaper to slap the cheapest tablet they could find in the car and call it a day... than actually bother with designing a dashboard with buttons and wiring looms. litteraly stoped bothering with any buttons at all. then they went even further and took away the instrument cluster too, just went with rediculous panoramic screen. did they bother to properly learn how to do software (you know since they have functionally 0 experience here) nope.. did they bother with developing a resonable UI that could be easily used while driving..... NOPE (at least not on VAG cars). did they bother to make the tablet at least stable.... nope...
am sure they are a bit better on newer cars..... but its just a fact some tasks were better physical buttons you could slap without looking at them

i drive a 2017 f22 220d manual. i know people say the f gen was dated towards the end of its life but personally i find it to be exactly what i like in terms of tech. analogue gauges, bluetooth audio but also a usb port to connect and charge. normal cruise control, not adaptive. if there was 2 things i wished it had it would be a touch screen head unit and apple carplay. but other than that, i dont need anything else really, its all al basically unnecessary for 99% of driving. i like auto lights as it means i cant forget to turn them on, but auto main beam is horrific. everything is still a physical button - heated seats and steering wheel, infotainment controls etc. g87 m2 will be my next car though in a few years time though, i love them, and tbh i definitely could get used to the digital stuff quite quickly, but it's just nice being able to not need to see everything to be able to change something

What's going to happen in 10-20 years time when loads of used cars in the market have touchscreens that need replacing?
Not really a complaint... but it seems like a future problem with the used car market is that new cars have so many features, it's just more stuff that needs replacing to keep a car capable of passing the MOT. My 2002 car has ABS which wasn't standard at the time, many cars didn't have it yet. But to pass an MOT, if my ABS is having issues (with a warning light on the dash), that's a failed MOT - not an issue with a TVR Tuscan which didn't have any of that stuff...

It's modern enough to be easy to drive, comfortable, and reliable, but old enough that it doesn't have any over complicated things to go wrong.
Infact, about all it has got is a drivers airbag and seatbelt pretensioners, which caused me a problem with the SRS light coming on, but was sorted by cleaning the contacts.
There's no planned obselesence, and I can work on it myself. There's not really anything that could go wrong that would cause me to scrap it.
Modern cars can be scrapped because of a single faulty sensor!
