This is BY FAR the best shakuhachi instructional video I have seen! I purchased the shakuhachi yuu in October 2019, am 56 years old, and have just recently begun to get reasonable sound from it with practicing a couple days a week. I need to, as you said, practice everyday. Your attention to detail and ability to explain the finer points are much appreciated. I am a Buddhist, and so the concept of playing this lovely instrument like a meditation very much resonates with me. Thank you so much for your wise teaching from 20 years of playing, and much metta.

Great explanation of the breathing. I got a shakuhachi in 1995 and have never even known what to call it until today. But by experimenting I realized you, breath instead of blow. Glad to know I’ve been doing it right. Now that I know what it’s called maybe I can find music to play.☺️. I’ve always just played by ear and don’t know many songs for it.

I made the flute and thought it lost, no I got the note now , this was so helpfull,wow what a note ,this is one interesting instrement ,and I made it my self .
So a lot of shakuhachi playing comes down to blowing in such a way as to alter the tuning? I suppose that explains that note slurring they get. I've always loved that sound. Can't wait to buy one of these.
I'm just got my shakuhachi, I play percussions on my drum kit and I have also learned to play the shamisen. The problem that I have with my shakuhachi is my overbite, does having this effect how I should hold my lips? Also thank you for uploading this video and teaching the shakuhachi to others.
Hi Perry, for some reason, I can only get a tone when I hold my flute almost perpendicular to the floor (nearly 90 degree angle..maybe 75 degrees). When I bring it up closer to my mouth, nothing seems to come out but holding it almost straight up and down, I can produce a nice tone and even play with about 3 holes covered. Do you have any idea what's going on? Thank you!
iam having difficult time with sound, I get only a whistle like sound and cant get a tone as yours, same kind of flute as yours, any additional help, please one week now and no progress , miguel
Without sitting in front of you, my guess is that your embouchure (shape of lips and size of opening) has to be adjusted and placed with the correct position and angle according to the design of your flute, which is different from my flute to some degree. If you try to follow everything I am teaching in this video, you will get the sound sooner or later. Look closer at 4:30 sec. Good luck.
Hi..thanks for this very helpful introduction. As I´m a beginner my bamboo shakuhachi gets pretty wet. Do I have to take Special care especially as this is a new flute like only playing for 5 min a day or anything like that?
I would say be careful of submerging, if the inside is lacquered it might cause damage - might be best to oil just the outside, although always ensure to dry the inside after playing. Olive oil or any other decent oil can be used though, I think, if hazel nut oil too expensive.
What do you think is the best key to play Shakuhachi? I play the DongXiao so I have some knowledge on how to play basically, but I'm thinking about getting a Shakuhachi, which are two different flutes. But I don't know what key to get it.
1.8 standard length if you want to study with a teacher. Outside of that, I personally like long bass flutes. That requires alternate hand and finger positions but might not be an issue for any m usician as we know how to adapt.
@@solacellee Yes, every handmade shakuhachi sounds and feels different. I recommend my refurbished wooden shakuhachi made in Japan. These are the standard for students. Then find a teacher.

Hi, I am new to talking about Shakuhachi, but I researched to try to understand the differences between them, but I still have doubts and if you can help me I will be very happy, I am intending to buy a model without utagushi, if I am correct the name would Hotchiku be right? What is the difference between the shakuhachi (Hotchiku) key in #B to key #D on the pentatonic scale? Does the mouth of a Shakuhachi need to be fully aligned with the cut that is made to make the Hotchiku curve? My intention is for meditation and I would like something for beginners, to practice and in the future to invest in other sizes. There are two questions I have to acquire one. Thank you very much

The difference between the #b and #D is the length. The D is shorter at 54.5cm and the B is 62cm, roughly.The cut is very important. But more important is that the flute is well made. Like all instruments, ones that are well made will work well and inspirit learning while ones that aren't will not be played. Feel free to look at some hotchiku flutes at yungflutes.com. I started trying to play when I was 79. Stopped after a few years . Am restarting again at 92 and find this video an excellent help!

Rachel Gohlman lot of shakuhachi teacher in Japan recommend plastic shakuhachi can do almost everything.
