This was very useful and it worked as stated. Local BMW dealer wanted 255.00$ cdn for a new key and 55.00$ cdn plus tax to resolve the issue. There should be a law against this type of abuse!

Agreed it’s robbery, they quoted me $276.00 plus $50.00 CAD to replace the key and program.

There should be legal ways to compete to drive down the cost. Not a law against taking advantage of the system

Good tip - stick the metal part of the key into a vice to hold it whilst you cut the casing off - saves you cutting your hands...

Thanks Andy, sadly dealer nowadays are fooling lots of their customers whom ending up paying a lot of money for small things like that. If BMW wanted to help their customers, they would easily design after sale fob case that has screws and instead of £130 charge £20. But sadly this is how it works with most of the dealer.
    Thanks for the heart video.

Nice video pal but like u said it’s a dangerous job , it takes ages to separate it and you can loose your fingers in the process, only tip I can give is that I used a pair of mole grips with some paper in the jaws and gripped the blade while I cut it , I slipped a few times so thanks God I had the grips 👌👍

Hi Andrew, How did you align the two battery terminals with the two holes on the PCB? The original battery has these circular connector on each side of the battery - I removed it with the soldiering iron from the PCB but now the new terminals are not aligning with the two holes - which are in 10 & 2 o,clock position ?!! That’s the last thing I cannot resolve. Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

hi Andrew contacted you before ,after making an Arial wideband (scanning only) for my Watson scanner looking at this one but sure with your expertise you could build a far better one or at least show me or tell me how to do it?
Watson WSMA-881 SMA Super Gainer Wideband Handheld Scanner Antenna 25-1900MHz
Our most popular replacement scanner antenna, this antenna will improve the performance on any VHF/UHF scanner compared to the standard antenna supplied with it.
This antenna is a male SMA connector, we also have the same antenna with a BNC connector on it (search for W-811).
This antenna is designed with really long distance reception in mind and that's exactly what it does. The high quality engineering and ergonomic design ensure that it is the natural replacement for those seeking to extend their receiver’s range.
    25 - 1900MHz
    40cm long

Nice tutorial but I would highly recommend wearing gloves in case the blade slips. Start by rocking the blade at the key ring side of it, then rock it back and forth around the perimeter from that point.Carefully pry the circuit board out, then clean the dried glue around the perimeter of the casing with a sharp knife before reinserting the circuit board. After de-soldering and removing the battery, use a solder sucker to clean out the holes. Apply flux (important to ensure a clean tight bond when you re-solder). There are small notches on each side of the circuit board which fit into the case.

are you sure it is the battery?
my 3 series e46 is over 17yo and both keys still work despite it having incredibly low MI (key not in ignition to charge much at all)
one key stops working sometimes but it is because it is not coded to the car
try to re code the key to the car first before you open the key
i almost tried to replace my battery and there was nothing wrong with it for some reason it came un coded to the car

but i am also going to get myself a K+DCAN cable and get int NCS expert
or maybe a BMW scan tool dongle so i can code other things myslef

I got new rechargeable LIR2025 batteries online and after receiving them realized they are 3.6V and the original is 3.0V. Is this a problem? I remember reading somewhere that the facelift E46's have 3.0V and the non-facelifts 3.0. Should I try the 3.6V batteries or can overvoltage damage the key electronics?

    • @lpns

Ok, so hows this for weird - just put new battery in, same as yours (LIR2025), went out to the car and tested it - unlock works, boot unlock works, starts the car, but the key will NOT lock the car.
Everything working except lock function, and from a good distance, so new battery is OK, but it doesnt lock. Tried pressing the button on the circuit board directly - nothing.
    any ideas???

May need to solder a new micro switch onto the board

    • @davedsamhoun
      @davedsamhoun Před 2 lety +3

you need to reprogram your key to the car after changing the battery, to do that 1.insert key into ignition and turn only to the first switch then turn of and pull key out
      2. on the key press and hold the unlock button and press the lock button 3 times while still holding the unlock button, then release it.
if you did it correctly after releasing you will see the car locking and unlocking all 4 doors which is a confirmation that the key is programmed correctly.

You are pretty cheap to run such an old car. It cost me £0 to have 2 original keys still working. I only drive rarely and have no idea where the keys get the charge from. Maybe from atmospheric static electricity.
