Mike Brown thought it was a game of touch! Apparently when he went to bed after the game he got his mum to look under his bed to check that Alex Cuthbert wasn't there.

I remember it too. The memory is VIVID. I sat on the sofa with my English girlfriend and her public school educated
son. It was hard not to smile, but I simple said " pride comes before a fall". Interestingly, or maybe its not so interesting, but in the bias anglocentric British " This Week" magazine, there was a headline " England throw away Grandslam". I'm not sure what part of the 27 point advantage constituted " throwing it away". Wales were in their own stadium and won the championship, yet the saes headline wore its lack of magnanimity with abject pride.

Cracking atmosphere, raising the roof literally, and then Wales tear England apart, again. A more communal and inspired people than most English, apart from the old mining villages in Yorkshire, and some of the shipbuilding areas in Liverpool and Newcastle. Tough jobs, tough lives, and shared communally in tough neighbourhoods, but remarkable how they were able to stick together in the grimiest and most dangerous of conditions, and come out singing and winning, oft in the most poetical of style. Those days are about done now with the death of so many from that really earnest generation, including the Queen, who saw out two world wars, and if they didn't sacrifice their lives there, they did so 1000 feet under the ground, under some pile of rocks, or when their pits blew off their lids, and took hundreds with it, including women and children. Amazing how poverty, hard work, discipline, community and family spirit, austerity, and staring death in the eyes on a regular basis, all help to forge a society of on one hand hardened warriors, and on the other, big softies, who would give you their last penny out of compassion!

    • @nialloneill5097

And throw them some kind of ball, and they become experts in no time, able to integrate the prodigious individuals within a tight-knit family spirit on the field of play, just think, rugby, football and cricket. Almost all of the best from mining areas!

I remember in the build up to this game, Wales needed a minimum of 8 points margin of victory to retain the title. I feel if that margin wasn't necessary and we only had to beat them by a point; we would have lost the game. Simply because the boys didn't take their foot off the gas knowing they had to maintain a lead of 8 points plus to keep the title in Wales. It pumped them up to play with more intensity!

Wales could arguably be described as England's ultimate bogey team, considering that Wales, compared to England (a) is a lot smaller (b) is somewhat poorer (and this is reflected in their rugby budgets as much as anything else) and (c) has a much worse record against the Southern Hemisphere teams. The fact that England's winning ratio in this fixture is only 51% (including draws) is pretty extraordinary.

+Robyn Gordon Thank you but I can assure you we wish we were as good at rugby as NZ. You show your pride on the pitch. We do share a tradition as rugby loving nations, but you've been the best, we just among the other top half dozen countries. I enjoyed meeting some New Zealanders in Wales during the world cup. I think we lack a little belief when playing the top 3 Southern hemisphere teams, so often in recent years we have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory v Australia in particular, but also SA. We were unlucky in the 70s to play NZ in 2 of our weaker seasons, and have close controversial defeats, which certainly haven't helped our mentality since.

Let's be honest, compared to the money and pool of players England has compared to Wales they should be dominant. Either Wales(and other small nations e.g Ireland, nz) are phenomenal or England think they are better than they actually are. I'd say it's the later. NZ are a level above, but I do wish Wales had beaten France in that semi and faced a weaker(If there is such a thing) NZ team in the final. I really believe Wales would of had a real good chance of winning that game.

I'm English but i was brought up in Wales. I always get confused over which team to support, sometimes it makes me feel a bit sad. I hate how both teams obsess over beating each other, but it takes both teams to create that! Neither is to blame!

+April Phillips Those with power are always more to blame since they have greater ability to make improvements and not oppress or cause ill feeling in the first place. Power corrupts; that has been proven over and over again. It dehumanises the powerful and exploited alike. And those who wish to have or retain power over others are already corrupted.

Why are people still saying England aren't a challenge to Wales? Did they watch the previous six nations? England beat Wales in Cardiff to a very unsportsmanship crowd which would probably be the hardest position to put England in.
Maybe cause the roof was open
