  • In this lesson/tutorial, I show you how gongs are typically played and give you some tips on getting all kinds of sounds. I show four different types of gongs: Symphonic, Chau, Wind, and Javanese/Bali. There are also FOUR SEPARATE videos for each of these gongs.

I play a 22" wind gong in my drum circle. I like because I can choke, or mute it to various degrees. I place it between my legs, standing or sitting, and can control the amount of ring, muffle, and mute. This allows me to play it like a real instrument, and not just for making noise. No other gong can give you that much control.
It's also very good for meditation, with a very subtle, gentle sound.

Hello Maestro. I preferably like the more oriental asian gongs.. not because I'm asian but because the harmonic from the asian gong is much more compare to the symphonic. It's like if you hit it once and let it ring... it produce a nice harmonic "dialogue" within the gong.

The javanese instrument here is a kempul, not a gong. To be called a gong it would need to be about twice as big and at least an octave lower. And that instrument is really not in tune; it should have a very clear pitch and almost no clanging in the high end.
