      How Ian skipped Martha's (always a line) for dessert or failed to mention the Japanese store owners opened a restaurant steps from where they ate is almost as odd as ordering a quesadilla to test quality. Zero mention of subway, LIRR and major highways in proximity nor the NYPD precinct here or the Metropolitan Ave area or any of the commercial business presence which drives people here. A lot has changed here in the last few years. Agree with others that Martha's, Nick's (top ranked), Station House, Banter, Sushi Time and Bangkok Cuisine are top notch must eats along with newer additions (miss some of the others who have closed in the last 6 months).

    • @tips4tourists790
      @tips4tourists790 Před 3 lety +1

      @@Myaarc The reason why I skipped the restaurants you mentioned right now is because of time. We did everything in this video over the course of a single day, and I like fan favorites like Nick's, Martha's, or Station House. Maybe one day on my YT Channel I'll highlight a couple of other restaurants in Forest Hills. Believe me though, just because we didn't go to these other restaurants, doesn't mean we don't like any of them or know how popular and/or famous they are. I lived in the area throughout the majority of my youth, so I know a majority of these places. Btw, we were actually supposed to visit Nick's as our first stop, but the place hasn't even opened up so we decided to make a switch. I figured 5 Burro was a good choice because I loved their salads and tacos.

    Forest Hills Gardens is a very affluent area and you need major bucks to buy a house in there. Also they have certain "rules" about the homes that requires they remain in the tudor style. Jamaica Estates also has many beautiful Tudor homes and tree lined streets, however recently people have moved in building McMansions that have ruined the Estates.

    • @sirich7751
      @sirich7751 Před 2 lety +1

      Rules? The Gardens has full blown Architectural committee and by laws restricting what you can and can not do. But this keeps the look, feel and charm intact. Walking the Gardens in the spring time when the flowering trees are in bloom is spectacular. Grew up there......miss it to this day. Never fully appreciated the architecture as a child.

    Thanks so much for this video tour of my past neighborhood where I lived there 20 years. Left in '97 and I do miss the shops and Forest Hills Gardens. It was modeled after the English concept of "garden cities" and was developed in 1909 of about 175 acres of Tudor style, Arts and Crafts and some ersatz French Chateau homes, popular in the 1920's. I was told it housed many silent screen stars when the Astoria Studios movie lots were in operation. Just a beautiful place to wander the winding streets, jog or drive through of a different time and place. Thanks & thumbs up!

    Forest Hills is a beautiful neighborhood and what you said about the dumplings being some of the best anywhere in NYC is spot on. I once went to a really good restaurant in Forest Hills and was blown away by the dumplings. In terms of comparing Forest Hills to places in London or somewhere in the UK, I feel a lot can be said about NY. For example, parts of Williamsburg and Bushwick remind me of Shoreditch because of the trendy population and architecture, and its art scene. Astoria reminds me a bit of Finsbury Park because there are tons of people in Astoria who are from Eastern Europe, and also parts of Astoria closer to Ditmars Boulevard are very suburban but closer to Broadway, Astoria dazzles with nightlife, bars and restaurants, a mix that is very typical to London. Middle Village reminds me a bit of northern parts of London such as Freirn Barnet, High Barnet and Hampstead because it has a very large Polish population as well as people living from other parts of Eastern Europe and places like Ridgewood, which is also known to have a mix of people from Poland, and also from the states, but mainly people from Eastern Europe, reminds me a lot with Ealing, also being so spread out and suburban. Bryant Park or Midtown is a lot like Russell Square, but with skyscrapers. Oxford Circus and also PIccadilly Circus in London is just like Times Square and Harold Square but without the skyscrapers. Areas of Jackson Heights and Forest Hills kind of remind me of Kilburn in London also because of the large Indian population (in Jackson Heights) and the mix between high rise buildings and suburban areas. Forest Hills can be a bit like Golders Green because of its colonial architecture and a large Eastern European and Jewish population.
