Welcome to a new build. One that is going to put up a huge fight and test my patience.
One of Scott’s earliest mountain bikes, this one has come equipped with the MT60 groupset. Surprisingly, at this time, the MT60 was the lower groupset as the only other available happened to be the M730 (XT) variant. Progress through the years and the MT60 keeps its second place in the hierarchy eventually turning in to the DX group. Not a bad find then! This well equipped bike only needed the wheels and the crankset to make it complete again and they were supplied by Marcin @ www.ebay.co.uk/usr/msccycling...
This particular bike has had a hard life. Bought by its previous owner in the early 90s, it had been ridden continuously and it showed. The stem and headset had rusted to the fork steerer from the years of Peak District weather. The seat post, not needing to be adjusted, had welded itself to the frame. The bottom bracket had been replaced but the “new” version came with weakened plastic cups that would need a special touch to remove. Finally, the paintwork... the one deep, bright pink had faded to almost white after years of riding and the black had countless chips to its once gloss finish.
This bike will get restored back to its former glory and I’m looking forward to it. Subscribe to see the finished bike in the near future. - Zábava
I started messing about with bikes because of you 😀👍 and now I love it
Awesome! Always good to hear! Tell your bank account I'm sorry though ;)
I had a Scott Sawtooth and it was a great bike. I bought used on craigslist, cleaned it up and eventually gave it to a friend's grandson.
Something about these old Scott mtbs. There was a ton of thought that went into the design and build of those bikes. Such a gorgeous era of cycling
I've still got this to do! It was such a nightmare but I've since found out it might be a "special edition" of some sort. It has a 001 serial number!
Huge respect for heading into such a project!
Always a pleasure to watch, thanks.
Awesome video 👍! Cool bike. Lots of work. Looking forward to the next video.
Really enjoyed this detail level, and appreciated how much work is involved.
But most of all I respect the knowledge imparted on the walk around in the beginning.
Thank you! I know this was a very word heavy episode rather than working montages.
And in at Number 4 pop pickers...... Nice to see lovely Torvy the Cat.
Looking forward to the finished Bicycle when it is done.
Not half.....
Back in the day this was a very very cool bike, only rich kids had these! Sad to see it in this state!
goodwork cant wait for the next video!
I found a old Dawes Galaxy at the local scrapyard and now I’m turning into a bicycle similar to your Dawes Impulse build
Fun to watch
Cool bike, enjoyed the synthwave.
Quality vid as always . Look forward to seeing the pink
Awesome 👏 I remember those spoke holder things. I look forward to seeing the final restore. I hope you can get that seatpost out. I’ve got a few old bikes in my restoration cue also.
It'll be out soon. It's just slowly bubbling away.
Great music on your channel, besides the bikes!
You have a nice diy project there! one like for the bike and for the friendly cat
wow lot of work, glad i came across your sight, do you no if i can fit a deore 7 speed thumb shifter, to a lx 7 speed bracket, i was thinking of undoing the deore and fitting it to my brake lever bracket, but i notice they have pins in the bottom, thank you.
Great video. I’m particularly interested in how you are dissolving the seat post with caustic soda as I have a couple of mid 90s bike with the same problem. How long do you leave it in until you refresh the solution? What’s the acid water ratio?
Cheers
O man, you're making me seem officially old when a bike from '87 is a vintage rebuild.
Robb Chastain ...You noticed that too?
(I'm starting to not like this guy 😂).
@@blipco5 Yeah, I'm getting pretty steamed about this cat :)
Robb Chastain ...When I saw the title I'm like '87 ???. WTF.
(Over 30 years ago. WTF indeed 😥
@@blipco5 lol, at least now I'm not feeling so alone. I was thinking maybe I should be staring out the window and listening to some vintage Madonna. And I grin, but this rebuild does bring to light a forgotten bit about that decade, the popular use of colors like pink and yellow and teal. And neon, lots of neon.
Haha sorry guys! I've been corrected before on the whole vintage/retro wording. It's a bit of both really.
Good score on the crank and cassette!! Looks in great nick. Bloody hard to find uniglide stuff too 😬
I know right! That's why I was initially thinking of going 7 speed so I could use easy to come by HG gear.
It looked good from afar but it was far from good. This is gonna be interesting. 👍
I have a city bike, maybe from the 90s that has two extra spokes on the chain stay.
Y la segunda parte?
I enjoyed seeing your restoration effort and of course the music! What is the title called?
Hi, has this a 130mm rear end?
I like bikes with U- Brake bosses behind the bottom bracket, because of the clean looks - all cables under the downtube - and the brake functioning really great.
Chainstays seem to be not to very long and it has vertical dropouts, plus the nice chainstay protector - nice find.
'Ride In Style' (Scott USA)
Nice nice nice! :)
Whens part 2?
The latest stuck seatpost I had (91 Wheeler 5500 with 30mm seatpost), was far down in the seat tube, about 25 cm IIRC. What I did, I took a piece of wood, sawed it to fit inside the seat post (as it cracked when I tried to clamp it on a vise and turn the whole frame).
Then I took a hacksaw blade and sawed a groove on to the wood. Then I had another piece of wood to make a handle, that I splitted at the end and screwed the end of the saw blade to it.
I bought a high quality (Sandvik) big toothed hacksaw blade to cut through the aluminium more quickly and easily. The process still took ages but I did just two cuts and managed to cut all the way down on the post.
There was no post sticking out anymore so I didn't have anything to grasp on to pull it out. So I went and drilled a hole on the back where there is a slot on the seat tube. Then I used a punch and a hammer on that hole to get the post moving up. I had to drill at least 4 holes to get the punch to sit right in between the seat stays and eventually got the seatpost punched out.
Also for some weird reason (frozen water or something) the seat tube had dents and bulges on it and I figured the seatpost must be really stuck.
A make-shift saw to get the job done. Nice one.
@@MonkeyShred Also RJ The Bike Guy had a short video of a proper saw blade holder named "Jab Saw" which looked quite vintage.
be nice to see this complete have you filmed it yet ?
Unfortunately not. Life and other bits keep getting in the way. It’s definitely a special one though!
Have you ever heard of an 1:1 aceton-ATF mixture? It is supposed to be the best penetrating fluid. I think you should try that in the future.
Is there a follow-up video? If yes please send the link
And the part 2 amigo ?
just a quick one, do not attempt to unscrew the cap of the thumb shifters, they unscrew from the bottom, and also the nuts are anti clockwise, inside.
melt it out?! Makes sense but I've never heard of anyone doing that.
Last resort. Caustic soda will chew through the alloy and leave the steel tube untouched. :)
Great video as always! looking forward to pt 2.
Tange is pronounced 'Tun-Gay' by the way :)
Hopefully it won't be too long away. I'm waiting on the decals to be drawn and I'm still trying to fight that seat post!
MT-60 doesn't have two zeros in it!
The idea of the chainstay is that the spokes are twin function - they're spare spokes, but they also act as a chainstay protector.
This was interesting, did you finish the job?
Not yet. The seat post was an abolute nightmare to remove. It caused a bit of damage I need to tidy up.
Dear Monkey Shred: Great videos and explainations!
Did the seatpost finally disappear/come out? How does the new paint job and the decals look like? Will part 2 come soon?
Please can you tell me the name of the song? thanks.
what happened to this bike?
Where is the second part? Can't find it
Still in the making. That seatpost was extremely stuck and caused a bit of damage that I need to rectify
@@MonkeyShred I wish you a good luck.
Don't add a seatpost clamp. Just ride it around and aim for speed bumps. That'll knock it loose!
11:45 make America great again :)
yo, where you from man? i hear about 5 different accents lol
I'll buy those shifter from you , let me know .
