      and guy that is closest in looks to "normal" Superman is Captain Atom x Dr Manhattan (who was THE Superman and also literally the Big Blue of Watchmen) and also a legacy hero of this universe
      Really like how Jurgens and others pushed the concepts to the break and played on their names.
      Worth mentioing that in 1936 our "normal" Superman was supposed to be an "alien" (because of note on some strange language) from future Earth sent back in time, Kents also were Sam and Molly before Unnamed Pa and Mary (in Superman #1, last time origin was written by creator).

      When DC created the Tangent Universe they were intentionally doing the same thing they did in the late 1950s where they created new heroes with the same name as the Golden Age Heroes (such The Flash, Green Lantern, and The Atom). In most cases the new heroes were similar powers wise, but not in every case such as with The Atom.
      With The Tangent Universe they created a lot of characters/items/organizations with familiar names but made them very different. As examples, The Batman was inspired by the nickname of Batman, the Dark Night, Impulse is a brand of soda pop, and Imra Ardeen (the name of Saturn Girl in The Legion of Super-Heroes) is a woman who meets The Batman (she resembles a woman he loved in the past).
      The Tangent Universe hasn't been forgotten. In the story "The Legion of Three Worlds", set 1,000 years in the future, Superboy-Prime goes to the Superman Museum and one of the displays is a picture of the Superman of the Tangent Universe.

    I also liked the versions of Stan. It could be better, I can concede that, but Stan still got juice enough to in one chapter of the character put some interesting seed than can be used by other writers.
    For example, his version of Superman, is a stranded cop from a advanced civilization. Here he have superpowers, is the strongest guy of the world, but still have a huge inferiority complex inside him. And that I found it an interesting twist.

    Tangent easily for me.
    It does it's own thing with the characters while still maintaining a flair of individuality and shades of grey that very much resonate with the DC style. It's very true to a lot of the DC tropes whether it's legacy or presenting different ideals through a prism while still remaining true to a lot of core elements. Superman for example still has a lot in common with Siegel and Shuster's while completely remixing the fundamentals on a more superficial level.
    Stan Lee's universe was too much a Marvelization of the brand for my tastes. I don't really like marvelized writing all that much with DC heroes. It's probably a key reason I always liked pre-crisis Superman despite growing up in the era where post-crisis Superman was the guy on the newsstands every week back in the late 80's and early 90's.

    The Amalgam Magneto and the Magnetic Men issue inspired some of my childhood superhero creations. And in rereading it I think it's still fun. Not sure I liked much else but that's still one issue up on the others. The Just Imagine issues I read felt stale and were a little boring, though there was some decent Bachalo art in the Catwoman one if I'm remembering correctly. Tangent I read a couple of and was quickly disintered, though I remember liking some of the character designs. So, due to the enjoyment of a single issue, Amalgam wins! Plus at least it was a kind of fun seeing how they'd merge creations from the Big Two. And this is more time spent writing about these books than I ever thought I'd do, haha.

      I agree that it is likely that copyright issues prevent wider use of the Tangent Universe characters. It is similar to what happened with Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew.
      It was originally going to be the JLA (Justa Lotta Animals) and featuring funny animal versions of the Justice League members, such as Super Squirrel, Wonder Wabbit, The Crash, and The Martian Anteater. Unfortunately, if it became popular copyright issues would have prevented it from being more widely used.
      So instead, Scott Shaw! created Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew which was set on Earth-C. Later the JLA (Justa Lotta Animals) made an appearance and were put on Earth-C Minus.
      Later, the animals of Earth-C had to evacuate their Earth. They came to the main DC Universe, but were transformed into regular animals but with human-level intelligence. I remember reading that Captain Carrot ended up being Zatanna's pet rabbit.
      Still later, the Zoo Crew was reborn and placed on Earth-26. It is an earth which operates under logic of cartoon physics.

    Thank you for taking the time and doing these videos in relation to the DC Alternate Earths. Unfortunately, as a person who grew up during the latter part of the Silver and the Bronze Age Comics' storylines, I can understand why DC and Marvel Comic Sales are terrible. These writers are either completely incompetent and have no clue on how to develop storylines or they're lazy and put anything in these comics. To me, the last twenty years of Comics have been awful. I know the kids who watched Justice League/Justice League Unlimited (JL/JLU) love that series and it reminds them of their childhood, but to me that animated series was dreadful. I never watch that series. Kind of reminds me of the horrible ending to Samurai Jack's Season 5 series finale. I can't watch that animated series anymore either. Season 1 through 4 was good, but Season 5's ending ruined the series. It retconned everything and voided all his adventures from Seasons 1 through 5. What an appalling ending. That's why I can't follow DC or Marvel anymore because who knows what horrible ending the writers will do to a character at the end of their story arc. Consequently, I don't waste my time anymore. It's a shame really.

    • @chantalmac5857
      @chantalmac5857 Před 2 lety

      So what’s your favourite story arc during the Silver or Bronze Age of comics?

    • @edg4441
      @edg4441 Před 2 lety +2

      @@chantalmac5857 Thank you for your question. This may sound somewhat unusual, but my favorite arc is from Marvel and it's the Spider-man - The Black Cat arc from 1979 until around 1985, the end of the bronze era. As much as I like Spider-man with MJ, this was a departure from the usual storylines in the Spider-man Comic. I thought they would stay together and get married.. That should've happened.
      Yes, Marvel's Secret Wars and DC Crisis on Infinite Earths were great, but these storylines ended the Bronze Age of Comics. I don't think Comics ever recovered, in my opinion. I also think the wedding of MJ and Peter Parker/Spider-man starts the slow decline of comics as a whole for DC and Marvel. The decline accelerated through the 1990s and 2000s. It'll never come back, unfortunately.
      I liked one and two-part stories In the 1970s. Then in the 1980s. it became 3, 4, or more part storylines over multiple comic books. For example, The Amazing Spider-man (TASM), running concurrently with Peter Parker's The Spectacular Spider-man. and then Web of Spider-man. By the 1990s, there were too many books, and the market became saturated. Now a story arc has 15 to 20-part stories over multiple titles. It's absurd. I stopped collecting and reading comics in 1993. If I want to catch up on a character, no matter what company produces the character including Marvel or DC, I go to Read Comics online. It's free. Here's the link: readcomiconline.li/.
      Lastly, I'll list my favorite characters from Both Marvel and DC:
      Marvel
      1 Spider-man (Peter Parker)
      2. Captain America (Steve Rogers)
      3. Iron Man (Tony Stark)

    Doesn’t feel like DC at all. This is more like Stan Lee’s DCU. I like changing things up, but sometimes it fails. This fails for me.

    You always incorrectly refer to Earth 1 as the main earth. That’s incorrect. Earth prime is designated as Earth 0. Earth 1 on the other hand is the earth where all the heroes are young, just starting out and have never met each other. It is it’s own imprint and is very different from earth prime.

      Thanks for the feedback. However, I don't think I mentioned on this video that Earth 1 as the main earth.

      @@DCnez Around 54 seconds in you refer to Earth 9 as being far different from Earth 1 which you also referred to as New Earth. “New Earth” is the old name for the main DC universe. Post New 52 Earth 1 and “New Earth” are not the same thing anymore. However you may have simply been referring to the Earth 1 that existed during the events in Earth 9 that this video is about. I don’t really know enough about Earth 9 to say what the state of the multiverse was when stories from there were being written. Maybe I’m misunderstanding that, idk.
