Just Cats It’s an older Barbie movie. It has a similar storyline to this movie actually, it’s about a princess who meets a pauper in the village, they look a lot alike apart from hair colour and a birth mark. Throughout the movie Anneliese the princess disappears by being abducted, Erika the pauper takes her place in the castle till they find her. This is an extremely basic description so if you want more you can go to the Wikipedia page about it. Basically princess and the pop star is the more modern version of this storyline!
I actually find both versions of the song pleasant. Also, this movie has more songs than just this one that reused the meaning of a great song from an older movie. We shouldn't judge the movie just because off a single song. Of course, everyone is entitles to their opinions. If you like the old version better, you can. If you like the new version better, you can. You can even like both versions.
Point of original song: it's hard to be a princess because every present comes with strings. As in, even in her privilege, she is controlled. Point of this song: being a princess is great! Why are you even wanting to be something else when you're already living the dream?
ive always felt that the first one is a more traditional princess- like she really will be inchaege one day. the princess and the popstar by contrast is set in a more modern time, and so not only does the princess have fewer true responsiblities period, she has more wiggle room with behavior. Thats why the song is less about edicte and more about perks.
Because the Princess and the Pauper was set in the medieval era, there were more responsibilities. Princesses these days have less responsibilities, though. So they're just having fun.
This song is so catchy and ya'll don't understand that this is a MODERN remake. It's not about the responsibilities or anything. They're telling each other about their lives.
I'm not here to complain but I feel as if Barbie films are gradually sinking. The messages in former films and the songs inspired a lot of girls (including myself) and whether this song is modernized to pop music I think it's just important that the viewers learn something through the song or the overall film.

ok the fact that i like the original better aside, the "popstar" actually gives good advice. "love every fan no matter how bizarre they are" that's good advice.
They knew Princess and the Pauper was their best movie, so they tried to remake it for the next generation, and they failed. If you like the movie, I'll respect that, cause there are definitely worse, but you know the original is better. The sad thing about this movie existing, is that a lot of kids today haven't seen Princess and the Pauper, but they've seen this. They're being robbed of a good movie. And I know this is true because my friends little sister once asked me what my favorite Barbie movie was, and I of course said Princess and the Pauper, and she tried to freaking correct me. She's like "You mean Princess and the Popstar?" And that is the moment I died inside.
I've seen The Princess and The Pauper, but I like this version MUCH MUCH better. It's actually my #1 favorite Barbie movie. But it actually makes since why because I was born in 2004 and that's when the movie came out, but I'm not used to that stuff. I like the newer modern things. And this movie was just AMAZING in my opinion.

I agree that Princess and the Pauper version of this song is better, but you don't need to insult this version. The reason they put this in the movie was to honor the original movie.
Though I prefer Princess and the Pauper but this modern version tells us something more. You see, this modern version focuses on being who you want to be --princess and a rockstar unlike Princess and the Pauper where they focuses on being free from their responsibilities like just for a day.. So meaning, this modern version is like "oh I want to be this person and then realizes that there is so much to be like that other person after being her."
Everyone's complaining that this one doesn't show the ''true'' struggles of being a princess, but keep in mind that this is a more modern age in this movie. Royalty doesn't really have that much responsibilities anymore. The original was about when royalty ruled the land and there were no ''Presidents"'' or anything like that.
I've always thought, that in these version both girls are trying to show the most attractive parts of their lives, so that the other one would not be scared of the perspective to live like a princess or a popstar. In the same movie Tory is having troubles with writing a speech about her country and Keira had no idea how to write new songs. So, in the end, there were difficulties in both of their lives, but they just didn't tell each other about them. Or probably I got to deep into it and the writers decided to simplify the original song for younger audience. P.S Sorry for my bad English

While I am a sucker for the good ol' Barbie classics, I don't mind this version at all. I thinks its cute, like a nice little remix. Its also very fun and obviously a modern version, nothing wrong with that! Its a lovely tribute to a great Barbie movie!💙❤

I have no regrets listening to Barbie music. It's better than a lot of recent music. And also are we going to sit here and argue about which version of a Barbie song is better. Are we really.
The original will always be the best because it showed how hard it is to be a princess aside from the glam, but even I admit this is insanely catchy and that switching vocals at the end was so exciting for me.
You guys might prefer the old version and think "this one has no meaning" but it's super meaningful for the Popstar part, which didn't exist in the Princess and the Pauper which only talked about being a princess.

They actually make it sound way easier to be a popstar than a princess. Celebrities have it hard, royalty has it hard but here they make it sound like it is fun and easy. But I still like the song but I get why people like the original more and Princess and the Pauper have THE BEST soundtrack.

Most of the comments are talking about how they ripped off princess and the pauper but tbh kids these days are more into these kinda things and I think it's amazing how they sorta re-wrote the song to sound a bit modern. Princess and the pauper will always have the best version of this song but im impressed for the movie producers and stuff for re creating it and making it a good song. And if you don't like it don't listen to the song or watch the movie. And if it bugs you that much you write another song for them to use in the next barbie movie. Yes but princess and the pauper was a big part of many children's childhood and most of them do prefer the original more. Maybe it's just a movie for you but an emotion for many others.
What's really wrong here? We all knew today's generation, new different taste from different people and most importantly, how the people function nowadays. I'm not a fan of this movie nor defending to pinpoint out but I'm here stand up for respect only. With all these comparisons between The Princess and the Pauper is better than this movie is completely dismaying. What would you think that the ones who created this movie would think? For me I like this version because when I was young I remember watching this movie on tv for FREE. I enjoyed it that's why it is stuck in my head. So I guess all of us have different stories and emotions in both film, that's why for me, we don't need to compare it. If someone likes the original version then they like it, if someone likes the modern version then they like it, when someone likes the both films then that is great! No need to compare.
The thing that really bothers me about this song, other than it being an obvious copy from the original story, is that it trivializes and downplays the great amount of work that goes into being a princess. Being a princess is a job, it's not some free excuse to "stretch on a golden yoga mat" or "get a foot massage and mani-pedi too". The original Princess and the Pauper understood the concept that you have to give up your freedom for the greater good when it comes to being royalty, and even though Princess Annaleise wanted nothing more than to run away and marry the man whom she loved, she didn't. The only reason why Erica and Annaleise switched was that Annaleise was kidnapped, not because she decided to be selfish. Copying isn't the problem in this situation, so much as ruining the unique opportunity which the Barbie Corporation has of influencing children for the better. All that Barbie's Princess and the Popstar accomplishes is pointing children away from being loyal and understanding the difference between a need and a want, and towards "popstar icons" like Miley Cyrus.

This one is so much better than the original. The original is a bit formal and shows that a princess doesn't have a lot of fun and they can't do nothing interesting and funny.
The old one was the one with substance. The actual point of the song was to show how being a princess was difficult and not only fun, just like Anneleise complains about the whole movie. Being a princess is more about responsibility than being rich and glamorous
I think this one is like trash compared to the original. the song wasnt meant to be a duet, its supposed to literally be a lecture. it talks of how, sure princesses have lots of dresses and shoes but its mostly about how they have so much responsibility. like "never show a thing you feel inside"? that line wouldnt make the standards for the barbie movies anymore. you says its formal because thats how its meant to be. being a princess IS formal. And a big part of the movie in general is that annalise (dont know how to spell her name) doesnt like all the restrictions that come with being a princess. And, if im not mistaken, thats a big part of the ACTUAL story the Prince and the Pauper. This version takes the actual meaning of the song and twists and contorts it into something completely different.
I think there’s an obvious divide between likers of the original and the newest version - I reckon to be honest a lot of it is bias towards whichever you grew up with. Everybody knows the more you hear a song when you grow up, the more likely that you’ll enjoy it when you’re older purely for the nostalgia factor. For example, personally I like this version better because as a 2005 baby - that’s just simply the perfect era. I watched barbie films to death as a kid but I only rly ever watched a select few, it baffles me how many I actually missed out. The only classic I think I saw was the nutcracker one and that’s about it and then all the others I watched were around the barbie mermaid tale era. So to sum it up, the only true way to judge which version is better is from either someone who has seen neither before or someone who is a professional musical analyser 🤷♀️ but at the end of the day - whichever one you like the best will always be the best for you :) there is no superior really

According to the modernized movie, yes. I don’t really know if this movie showed any struggles in the dat to day lives. I think they just wanted to know how the other side lived or something. Princess and Pauper showed the struggles of royalty in this song while showing the struggles of the pauper earlier on. So you had a reason for both of them wanting to change up their lives for at least a day.

The original was deep and well-thought. Julian talked about the hard parts and responsibilities of being a princess. I love the original but honestly I really like this one, it has its own charm and reflects a more modern time (one thing i liked about the original better though is that it’s not a montage and edits(?) it’s just Erica being trained)
So like many others I think the original is a lot better. I understand that this is set in the modern age, so of course expectations for the princess are different than they would have been in medieval times. I guess what bugs me about this new version is that previously the song had a message that was important for young girls watching these movies to hear: no matter who you are and what position in society you fill there are privileges and responsibilities, and the princess and the pauper both have to learn this and understand that everyone has responsibilities they must attend to, but that they can still follow their heart while doing so. This one just teaches girls to live in a world where everything is superficial and shiny and easy and being a princess or Popstar is just a fun life of wearing pretty shoes and having expensive things, and I think it does a disservice to the girls watching it. I learned a lot from the original, I don’t think I would have learned much from this version if I were a kid now.
I don’t really like remakes at all, but I think I could’ve got behind this movie if it at least showed somewhat the premise as the original. I don’t mean by taking a song and changing up some lyrics, I meant showing the struggles from both sides. Like the responsibility of a celebrity and a Royal in modern age. Sure they have profound luxury, but they also have very little privacy. Like I think they could’ve done more. And this was a great song to expand on that thought because it’s literally a song on behaving as if you’re something else.

(This is his sister Bethany age 15)My whole family uses to watch the barbie movies and my mom's favorite was always the Princess and The Pauper. Barbie used to teach great lessons and be an inspiration to young girls everywhere and was an amazing roll model. Then starting two years ago the movies started getting kinda iffy. Now they keep doing stories that are cheesy, make barbie and her friends incredibly fake, AND have absolutely no moral or good lessons for young girls. I love the original version of this song and seeing where Barbie is headed with the newest movie Princess Power, it breaks my heart that my 5 year old sister won't get to know the same Barbie that I did growing up.

Lmao stop complaining! This movie never intended to teach "responsibilities" and "sacrifices" and this song never intended to teach "duties and hardships of a princess". It is not a medieval period and they gotta fit it according to today's kids taste (though it came out when I was a kid lol) This song seems to be telling usual activities done by both girl in a simple way. Popstar needs to rest for a while so that she could catch her breath. Princess need to be free of her world for sometime to try new things before coming back to her place realising her mistake and continuing her duties. The movie did a nice job doing it though I would say it was kind of sloppy and dry. But it is a good and catchy remake and I believe it is also a good song (actually prefer this to listen to) but I understand the original version and appreciate (actually love) that movie. But let's just not make a mess. This is still decent than the movies that came after this.

They knew Princess and the Pauper was their best movie, so they tried to remake it for the next generation, and they failed. If you like the movie, I'll respect that, cause there are definitely worse, but you know the original is better. The sad thing about this movie existing, is that a lot of kids today haven't seen Princess and the Pauper, but they've seen this. They're being robbed of a good movie. And I know this is true because my friends little sister once asked me what my favorite Barbie movie was, and I of course said Princess and the Pauper, and she tried to freaking correct me. She's like "You mean Princess and the Popstar?" And that is the moment I died inside.

I've seen The Princess and The Pauper, but I like this version MUCH MUCH better. It's actually my #1 favorite Barbie movie. But it actually makes since why because I was born in 2004 and that's when the movie came out, but I'm not used to that stuff. I like the newer modern things. Though I prefer Princess and the Pauper but this modern version tells us something more. You see, this modern version focuses on being who you want to be --princess and a rockstar unlike Princess and the Pauper where they focuses on being free from their responsibilities like just for a day.. So meaning, this modern version is like "oh I want to be this person and then realizes that there is so much to be like that other person after being her."
Everyone's complaining that this one doesn't show the ''true'' struggles of being a princess, but keep in mind that this is a more modern age in this movie. Royalty doesn't really have that much responsibilities anymore. The original was about when royalty ruled the land and there were no ''Presidents"'' or anything like that.
I've always thought, that in these version both girls are trying to show the most attractive parts of their lives, so that the other one would not be scared of the perspective to live like a princess or a popstar. In the same movie Tory is having troubles with writing a speech about her country and Keira had no idea how to write new songs. So, in the end, there were difficulties in both of their lives, but they just didn't tell each other about them. Or probably I got to deep into it and the writers decided to simplify the original song for younger audience.

For me I like this version because when I was young I remember watching this movie on tv for FREE. I enjoyed it that's why it is stuck in my head. So I guess all of us have different stories and emotions in both film, that's why for me, we don't need to compare it. If someone likes the original version then they like it, if someone likes the modern version then they like it, when someone likes the both films then that is great! No need to compare.
The thing that really bothers me about this song, other than it being an obvious copy from the original story, is that it trivializes and downplays the great amount of work that goes into being a princess. Being a princess is a job, it's not some free excuse to "stretch on a golden yoga mat" or "get a foot massage and mani-pedi too". The original Princess and the Pauper understood the concept that you have to give up your freedom for the greater good when it comes to being royalty, and even though Princess Annaleise wanted nothing more than to run away and marry the man whom she loved, she didn't. The only reason why Erica and Annaleise switched was that Annaleise was kidnapped, not because she decided to be selfish. Copying isn't the problem in this situation, so much as ruining the unique opportunity which the Barbie Corporation has of influencing children for the better. All that Barbie's Princess and the Popstar accomplishes is pointing children away from being loyal and understanding the difference between a need and a want, and towards "popstar icons" like Miley Cyrus.

I think this one is like trash compared to the original. the song wasnt meant to be a duet, its supposed to literally be a lecture. it talks of how, sure princesses have lots of dresses and shoes but its mostly about how they have so much responsibility. like "never show a thing you feel inside"? that line wouldnt make the standards for the barbie movies anymore. you says its formal because thats how its meant to be. being a princess IS formal. And a big part of the movie in general is that annalise (dont know how to spell her name) doesnt like all the restrictions that come with being a princess. And, if im not mistaken, thats a big part of the ACTUAL story the Prince and the Pauper. This version takes the actual meaning of the song and twists and contorts it into something completely different.
I think there’s an obvious divide between likers of the original and the newest version - I reckon to be honest a lot of it is bias towards whichever you grew up with. Everybody knows the more you hear a song when you grow up, the more likely that you’ll enjoy it when you’re older purely for the nostalgia factor. For example, personally I like this version better because as a 2005 baby - that’s just simply the perfect era. I watched barbie films to death as a kid but I only rly ever watched a select few, it baffles me how many I actually missed out. The only classic I think I saw was the nutcracker one and that’s about it and then all the others I watched were around the barbie mermaid tale era. So to sum it up, the only true way to judge which version is better is from either someone who has seen neither before or someone who is a professional musical analyser 🤷♀️ but at the end of the day - whichever one you like the best will always be the best for you :) there is no superior really

So like many others I think the original is a lot better. I understand that this is set in the modern age, so of course expectations for the princess are different than they would have been in medieval times. I guess what bugs me about this new version is that previously the song had a message that was important for young girls watching these movies to hear: no matter who you are and what position in society you fill there are privileges and responsibilities, and the princess and the pauper both have to learn this and understand that everyone has responsibilities they must attend to, but that they can still follow their heart while doing so. This one just teaches girls to live in a world where everything is superficial and shiny and easy and being a princess or Popstar is just a fun life of wearing pretty shoes and having expensive things, and I think it does a disservice to the girls watching it. I learned a lot from the original, I don’t think I would have learned much from this version if I were a kid now.
I don’t really like remakes at all, but I think I could’ve got behind this movie if it at least showed somewhat the premise as the original. I don’t mean by taking a song and changing up some lyrics, I meant showing the struggles from both sides. Like the responsibility of a celebrity and a Royal in modern age. Sure they have profound luxury, but they also have very little privacy. Like I think they could’ve done more. And this was a great song to expand on that thought because it’s literally a song on behaving as if you’re something else.

(This is his sister Bethany age 15)My whole family uses to watch the barbie movies and my mom's favorite was always the Princess and The Pauper. Barbie used to teach great lessons and be an inspiration to young girls everywhere and was an amazing roll model. Then starting two years ago the movies started getting kinda iffy. Now they keep doing stories that are cheesy, make barbie and her friends incredibly fake, AND have absolutely no moral or good lessons for young girls. I love the original version of this song and seeing where Barbie is headed with the newest movie Princess Power, it breaks my heart that my 5 year old sister won't get to know the same Barbie that I did growing up.

This movie never intended to teach "responsibilities" and "sacrifices" and this song never intended to teach "duties and hardships of a princess". It is not a medieval period and they gotta fit it according to today's kids taste (though it came out when I was a kid lol)
This song seems to be telling usual activities done by both girl in a simple way.
Popstar needs to rest for a while so that she could catch her breath. Princess need to be free of her world for sometime to try new things before coming back to her place realising her mistake and continuing her duties.
The movie did a nice job doing it though I would say it was kind of sloppy and dry.
But it is a good and catchy remake and I believe it is also a good song (actually prefer this to listen to) but I understand the original version and appreciate (actually love) that movie.
But let's just not make a mess. This is still decent than the movies that came after this.
why was i today years old when i found out they remade the song from princess and the pauper??? i LOVED watching both of these films as a kid BUT I ONLY REALIZED NOW AFTER I SAW THE COMMENTS IN THE PRINCESS AND THE PAUPER VERSION SO I CAME HERE TO CHECK.
