They were close ,and infact Zayn loved all the boys and he genuinely cared for them ,he had a special friendship with each one of them. They were put together and given no free will from the start so maybe they have had conflict from the beginning and separating is what helped them become real friends. When Zayn said he didn't speak much with Harry, i think he was talking about the "FOUR" era, cos if you look at the clips, all these are from pre four times. They were close ,and infact Zayn loved all the boys and he genuinely cared for them ,he had a special friendship with each one of them. Since Four,he wasn't at his best and he started to grow apart from the rest of the boys,i still don't get if the boys didn't notice the drift. When he couldn't handle it anymore he left. They could have handled it better. The boys were immature too, you can't really take sides here because both Zayn and the boys acted immature and messed up. I honestly think Zayn said those things because for him it was easier for the members to hate him than for him to know he broke their heart by leaving and cutting contact. So he purposely started a Twitter fight with Louis; and said he didn't have a relationship with Harry because again in his mind it was possibly better for them to hate him so he didn't have to think about them being upset or heartbroken.

We all saw what the camera's wanted us to see. They were put together and given no free will from the start so maybe they have had conflict from the beginning and separating is what helped them become real friends. I think Zayn is either afraid to try and reach out to them or he just simply wants to forget that time in his life. Either way as long as he has a long happy life it's no big deal.

I think Zayn nd Harry have different coping methods, Zayn likes to make it seem like it doesn't matter, Harry jokes about it. It's how they cope so no hate on either of them.

Zayn most likely has a coping mechanism of denying their friendship. Whenever leaving the band was brought up Zayn acted like it doesn’t matter and denied their friendship and quickly changed the subject.
Part of the reason why might be because if he talked about the good old times with his best friends, who were like brothers to him he’d cry. Even while acting like it doesn’t matter and denying their friendship he looks and sounds incredibly hurt but is trying not to show it, denying it instead of crying.
