With Hawaiis year-round growing seasons it is mind blowing how Hawaii is not self sustainable when it could be. The peoples slogan should apply to the food supply " grown here , not flown here "
Land on the major islands, excluding the Big Island, will run you $2 million per acre. Who can afford to grow crops on land that expensive? It wouldn't make economic sense. The produce you grow couldn't be sold cheap, because of what you had to pay for the land.
Hawaii does not have enough land to support itself and still have people live there. Like most small islands they have to import almost everything.

And white bread at that. I would be buying flour and making my own flatbread at home. Or buy corn flour and make tortillas. This kind of pricing madness only means that no one will buy it, and it will expire, so it will get thrown away. Better to simply go to the food banks and get it after it's been donated.
The flours cost a lot of money too.
@@T.S.000 Yes they do, but not as much as bread. Flour and corn tortillas are pretty cheap if you make them yourself, or some kind of flatbread. CEREAL and RICE, PRICES ARE CRAZY!
Many may not know this, but in the last 4 years 30,000 people have left Hawaii to the Mainland. Home ownership in Hawaii is but a "dream". One excellent example of some price gouging is the Kauai CVS/Longs Drugs store. The prices at their Kukuiuula ( Poipu) location are VASTLY higher from ALL their other locations. Is this ONLY because the Kukuiuula/Poipu location is right in a highly trafficked Tourist area?🤔
You may have a point about the tourism dollars helping to spur cost of living.
Not to be discouraging but home ownership is also but a dream in the mainland. I don’t see an end to this wretched country bleeding us all dry until only the rich can afford while they criminalize homelessness.
People dont care enough to say enough enough is enough! Once we all get together and make this stop . Then they'll get it
Buy a bread maker and make your own. This is messed up
Even the cost of materials is expensive in Hawaii. Flour, yeast, salt, and other ingredients would cost just the same, they all have to be imported onto the island, not to mention running that bread making machine can cost 46¢+ per KWH,wouldn't be surprised it electricity goes to 50¢ per KWH later in the year. So to make your own bread most likely cost just a much or more.
Times has always been expensive. Not surprised their bread is over 10 dollars
LOL…people who live on a small island more than 2,000mi from the nearest mainland with no infrastructure and industry to note are startled that the price of necessities are high.
People living on “paradise”, while wanting to limit others from living there, want to still have all the comforts of a large urban area on the mainland. Fools…
I agree! I'm convinced these people know nothing about economics!
Been awhile since I've bought bread... but it is just wheat, water, salt and yeast right? What is the weight of the loaf of bread? I do know that corn chips are selling for $12 a pound at most stores. And our government subsidizes corn. Glad folks are actually speaking up. Sadly our choice of a free market system is now controlled by a few conglomerates. Free markets and free competition should correct the pricing. But with huge companies controlling pricing there is no chance for new competition.
Nope, you got trucks, teamsters, employees, executive bonuses, shareholder dividends, spoilage, employee shrinkage and strikes. You got the federal government actively working to make productions costs more expensive by "Going Green".
The "huge conglomerate controlling pricing" must be located in Hawaii. Because where I live, you can still get bread for less than $2 a loaf.

I wont deny that there is some greed going on, there is....BUT the current administration ran on the promise of destroying the fossil fuel industy to replace it with "greener" energy.
Fuel and energy costs are up and that trickles down the cost of every single item that is produced and transported.
If it cost more to grow, farm, fertilize, harvest, transport, stock the product on the shelves then it will reflect in the cost. So something like a grain in the field will then change the cost of every item that grain goes into (bread, cereal, baking mixes, etc) and that is just ONE item.
Corporate greed is a thing and it does happen BUT we cannot ignore the Donkey in the room. Corporate greed is a place to be angry and take our attention of the fact that we are under attack in various ways....but hey, at least this administration is doing exactly what they promised to do 👍
And before a person tells me that the president doesnt decide the gas prices, I know this. But their polices do effect it and if they cant change much with the fuel industy then why the mumbo jumbo of promising their voters that they will end it? Leave it alone then if they have no effect on it.
