  • Famous graves in Manchester's Southern Cemetery.
    The Tour concludes with five significant names of national and even international importance.
    We start off by hunting down the grave of Len Johnson, the boxing champ who was denied honours because of his ethnicity, who later became one of the most prominent civil rights campaigners in the UK.
    Next is Philip Baybutt, a working class man who travelled to the US in the mid-19th century and got caught up in the Civil War. Fighting for the Union forces, he came home the first English recipient of the Medal of Honor.
    Then we find the notorious Conservative Transport Minister, Ernest Marples, whose corruption led to the demise of British railways, and who avoided thirty years of tax by fleeing to Monaco never to return.
    Finally we see one of the victims of the Munich Air Crash of 1958, William Satinoff, who was the only fan onboard the plane and sadly did not survive. He was very good friends with our final stop, which is that of Sir Matt Busby, the Man United manager and former Man City player, who did survive Munich and went on to become a legend of the game.
    Thus concludes six videos and twenty famous graves. A visit to the cemetery in person is highly recommended, if only to find a handful of these graves.

    Once again, thanks for this latest instalment Ollie, shame it's the last, but in Manchester and its surrounds you've got more interesting material than you can cover in a lifetime. Nice music too! I'm looking forward to your next video. Between you and Martin Zero it's like getting postcards from home! Cheers mate!

    Hi Mister Bee! My huband and I have just watched all six videos and enjoyed them so much. Manchester history is very interesting. I was particularly moved by the modern music ones as my brother, who was involvedi n that scene, tragically died young in 1997. It's amazing how many innovators were involved in the City's development and culture and how Manchester influenced the world. Fascinating! Keep 'em coming.

    I used to see Matt Busby when i drove passed his home on the way to work. He lived in a modest semi detached home opposite hough end, a stones throw from southern cemetary. A lad i knew is buried beside him called Lee Jackson. He died aged 18 while out celebrating uniteds uefa cup win around 1990.

    It always annoys me that people criticise Beeching for closing all the railway lines despite the fact he had no authority to do that - he just wrote the report. Nobody ever mentions people like Marples and Castle who did actually close stations.

    You stuck the knife into Ernest Marples just as he deserved. But without drawing any blood, or leaving a wound ;-)

    Really enjoyed your tour of southern cemetery, in fact all of your videos are very enjoyable to watch, keep it up Ollie 👍 Was wondering did you happen to see a number on Len Johnson's Head stone by any chance because he was the godfather to a friend of mine who lost contact with Len, after seeing this video i got in touch with my friend and told her about you finding Lens resting place, any information would be much appreciated.

    • @BeeHereNowuk
      @BeeHereNowuk  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi. Sorry I didn't notice a number but it wasn't too hard to find really. It was directly opposite the Baby Garden section, not far from the gate entrance off Nell Lane. I think it was the first or second row of graves from the path. There wasn't much info on the grave online which is why i wasn't sure that it was actually Len's, so there's not much else I can tell you about it really. Hope this helps though 😊

    There is so much of Manchester's social history that has been ignored by historians for example Phillip Baybutt is one of the thousands of textile workers who supported the emancipation of slaves and supported Lincoln, by refusing to process Confederate cotton. I remember as a kid jumping the fences of those allotments only to have the coppers come around our house. My Dad put stripes across my arse with his belt while telling the police "Don't you go bothering yaselves I'll deal with this" All for a pocket full of Brussel sprouts LOL.

      Bee Here Now Jean Jordan who The Yorkshire Ripper murdered is buried in the next plot of the left of number 14 on your list.. her murder site is if you go straight up the path on the right of your 13/14 graves to the bottom towards the allotments there’s a metal gate.. just 5 metres before the gates and 5 metres to the left in overgrown bushes is her murder site.. Vera Millward Sutcliffe’s other Manchester murder victim is buried in the section between 7 and 15 in an unmarked grave.
