- Hi, in this 'trying to fix' video I attempt to repair a Nintendo Switch that I purchased from eBay. It was sold as not able to power on.
Will it be fixable?

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince. - Jak na to + styl
Well done @My Mate VINCE, It`s not an easy connector to replace, You just needed a bit more solder on the pads ( like a nice puffy pillow on the whole pad) I use the edge of my table so I don`t have to deal with working in the air and my roll of solder to hold the board down on the far edge of the board, Thank you again for the mention. You're soldering skills are way better now, You can really call you`re self a pro now, Like I say anyone can do this just needs the basic understanding of electronics, "No one is born with knowledge it acquired and gained through experience
"
@10:50 Vince said that 20 Ohms normally doesn't short, even though the meter was beeping.
Question is how many Ohms is considered a short?
Someone tried to mod the Switch. The moment I saw the eBay listing and it said "UNPATCHED", I knew straight away. It looks like the previous owner tried to mod it with RCM. The fact it also had a 256gb memory card inside also gives it away.
Just as a side note... I've seen those exact memory cards on Wish and Aliexpress. Its most likely counterfeit and not 256gb. Its possible the previous owner didn't know this when trying to push a payload and it could have corrupted the SYSNAND.
@Raymakht05 Thats how fake cards work. They are flashed to trick the device into thinking they have more storage than they do.
@@jkarakizi so then how would the games work that makes no sense? it cant cap out cus then it wouldnt be able to show that its full. or would it stop at a certain storage space?
@@alexig1025 It overwrites the old data when new data comes in. If you try to write 32 GB of data to a card that's actually 16GB, it'll only have the last 16GB (definately corrupted) of data there.
I love how you went from being the repair guy that breaks the screen connectors to being an expert at fixing and replacing them. I think this video really shows how far you've come 😊
When it dries up and stops floating add more flux so it snaps into place. Also just poke one of the fingers out not holding the tweezers touch the board and pivot round it for stability.
Mate, your soldering skills have improved so much! I remember the first ribbon connector you've burned to hell trying to desolder it from the board..
Always a pleasure watching your wheels spinning trying to figure things out!
Also, dig the beard.
awww - I was looking forward to the "YES!" moment!
Already looking forward to the revisit where Vince fixes it.
This error is usually indicative of the internal memory being faulty. It is the chips to the right of the APU and are connected via solder balls. There are some vids on CZcams that show this.
I'd try to discard software issues before
I wondered about RAM! Maybe you are right!
This.
Vince, you've really improved a lot with soldering !
I love these switch videos. They are always so entertaining and informative!
That was very good thanks, seeing you improving along the way is the best part of watching your videos
Awesome vid Vince. It’s nice to see a repair being successful. You seem to be getting better at this fixing lark 😉
Never saw something before too. Very interesting. I'd love to see a revisit on that.
The previous switch killer is now the switch Archangel in the Nintendo world, well done bud GREAT VLOG.
Hope you can get this up and running it seems so close! Can't wait to see if there's a revisit video. GOOD LUCK MATE!
Love the fixing videos there always relaxing.
Best videos to fall asleep to. Also great to watch. His voice is so relaxing.
I have seen this error before. It, for me, was storage related. First of all, I echo the sentiments about that SD card: it could be fake. Try a known working one. I don’t think this will solve your issue, however. I believe that you need to get in contact with the seller.
Unlike those commenting, I can ASSURE you 100% that this Switch is NOT banned. You showed as much when you checked if the Switch was up to date. On a banned Switch, you can’t access Nintendo servers at all. Not even to check if your system is up to date. I know this because I have a banned Switch.
The eMMC module (internal storage) of the Switch is married to its motherboard. I was working on my nephews Switch using parts from my working one to diagnose the issue and I got mine and his internal storage modules mismatched. In this configuration, I got an error just like the one you’re seeing. Switching the internal eMMC modules allowed the Switch to opperate properly.
If the seller took apart the two Switches, it’s possible the two eMMC modules got mixed up. Providing the seller was ignorant of the fact that the parts aren’t interchangeable, it is very possible that it was a simple, non-malicious, mistake.
The seller may be able to facilitate the swapping of the eMMC modules between you and the other buyer if it proves correct that this is the issue.
Or, if you get in contact with the other buyer, and highly dependant upon the generation of the Switches in question, the other seller and you could use Hekate to pull a backup copy of the nand and send it via email and then use that selfsame program to overwrite the nand on your respective eMMC modules.
Or, this error may be caused by a faulty conntection of the storage mediums in question. Or it maybe be something else entirely. All I really know is that when I got this error (same exact issues-even the white screen) it was due to my putting the wrong eMMC module into the wrong Switch.
No matter the issue, I hope you see success with a solution.
Cheers.
This is why I love CZcams vids lll. This one should help me thanks
Accidentally swapping two eMMC's is possible, but remember in intro: Vince saw that this guy was selling two faulty Switches, not sure if the same issue. If this error is genuinely caused by using the wrong internal storage. then there's no way Vince can track down the customer of the seller's second Switch to rectify this, nor do I believe the seller has backed up the NAND backup of this specific Switch.
If the EMMC modules got switched up the console would black screen.
@@FennecTECH Except it wouldn't. Like I said in my first post: I literally have done this before. It operates just like in the video.
@@multifacetedabnormal4951 thats not possible each consoles bis keys are different it would be unable to even decrypt the contents of the nand. I come from he hacking scene and have a very deep understanding of the boot process
I'm a PC guy, not so much Switches, but everything about that last issue just screams RAM issue to me. I look forward to a follow-up video :)
It's fun to watch people fix things I normally don't, variety is the spice of life.
I know I am way behind the times Vince, and I always forget to bloody comment because I normally watch you on the TV. But you really do give people hope that they can do this stuff and get better!
Great repair Mr. Mate-Vince!
Hey Vince,
I really appreciate the time you give us! I have learned so much! Also just a tip to try on some old stuff before you go trying it on a real repair. I found that using a long strip of kapton tape on stuck to a connector with a tail to pull on usually 4-5” to keep your fingers away from the heat gets connectors off easily without damaging them, same goes for reinstalling them you can line them up and put pressure with the tweezers and use hot air to heat the board and solder joints. Just a thought anyways. I hope it helps you in the future! I used to take good connectors from iPhone, iPad, iPod boards with kapton tape and just stick them right on where there used to be a damaged lego style connector. Thanks again! From North Carolina.
Just wanna say I love your content 😂🙂😁
That was edge-of-seat/breath taking. I think I need a hot air gun. Never seen soldering from behind the board. I think this is your best ever repair, particularly given your history on those terrible connectors
my mate Vince keep up the good work. I have no idea how to work a switch.
another excellent and entertaining video vince! 🙂
Please revisit this switch. Someone messed with the software. The previous comments explain the fix better than I can. I do like it that they sent a free hair
Love to see a follow up on this one
Outstanding repair Sir!
Wonderful fix it video. Sorry to see you couldn't get revived to a game playable console. Hopefully the next video you can solve the problem
well done dude, amazing wee fix. especially after all the switch fails :) lets hope you can figure out the non playing games
Finally another Switch 🙌🔥
I’m thinking of getting into fixing electronics as a hobby as I love to watch these videos. I’ve never done soldering or anything like that but seen some kits an how to kits on Amazon so I’m thinking of starting their. Any ideas of where to start an what electronics might be good for beginners? Great job by the way! Can’t wait for a update on this switch
Great fix vince although it isn't fully working it's not your fault you successfully changed the fpc connector which is a win as that is a really complex fix that requires a lot of skill and patience which you definitely have a lot of I'm a huge fan of your channel and you really inspire me congratulations again on the repair I really hope to see a revisit of this switch as its a really unusual glitch and will be very interesting to see a revisit you never know it could be something as simple as the charge chip causing a short keep up the great work vince
What a shame . I even cheered when the screen came on undocked.
Would love to this revisted in the future.
Cheers vince
woah new camera?? looks great man, nice video!!
Hope it’s not a stolen Switch? Another great video Vince, thank you.
Well done!I think it’s your optimism that sees you though to a fix. Most of us, including me, would have given up well before getting to it at least displaying. Be great if you can fix that “software error”.
keep us to date about this switch, hope it ll work 100%.
Hmmm, that's proper strange about that last fault. If you have the kit to stick it in RCM mode ( hacking it ) see if it will boot up Linux, it could be something to do with the main NAND.
As for your work with that screen connector, good effort indeed, I managed to do that tiny Apple one I was telling you about in exactly the same way, 36 pins of hell, I don't recommend it, but thanks to watching your videos, I knew how to remove it with a heat gun from underneath ;)
Yea I think it was a hacked switch that was either banned or had some type of corruption issue when they hacked or not updated properly if running CFW specially since It had 256 GB SD card, with that big of an SD card coupled with what's wrong with it I have a feeling it was a hacked switch gone wrong, might be able to reinstall the firmware through CFW, not an expert myself just a hobbyist theory.
Great vid vince, tip, when applying solder for the LCD connector, ball the solder up on your tip and lot's of flux on the pads, you don't want the tip touching the pads, you'll get lovely pillows this way, if the tip touches you'll wipe them away. Minor criticism..... your quite rough with the wick, i only metion it because I've seen so many with pulled pads for people doing it like this, should be no resistance otherwise it's effectively sandpaper. Game-cart issues: check resistance to ground on a donor, i don't think it should be that low from memoy think it should be in the K's, remove chip and check again etc.
First class! Was holding my breath when you turned it on, after soldering it..
Completely agree, the price of faulty electronics has gone up massively,
Idk why but these videos of you repairing things are like asmr for me
Great video vince, watched this on patreon, did you manage to save that file I sent you :) I've done 7 switches in the past 24 hours (6 successful) on live stream lol
Fantastic video👍
How frustrating. Definitely sounds like it has been previously hacked, and the fact that you've connected it to your account and updated the firmware has alerted the Nintendo police and the console has been banned. The 256GB card would also point to someone having alot of games (that they probably don't own)
I think the only way to fix it would be to "update" it again, but with the latest custom firmware.
Having said all of that, I'm obviously not an expert, but that would be my uneducated guess 😁
Cheers Steve, what you said about the Micro SD card does make sense. I think you are spot on mate :-)
I have a 256GB SD card in my unhacked Switch, try again sweety.
@@Puremindgames thanks sweety 🥰
Nice work, fixed an iPhone 7 plus screen camera and home button (camera and home button because i busted them taking it taking it apart) but its working now. Used to fix anything but my eyes are not as good as they were. Just fixed a hover board internal power lead .Big stuff i can see.
this looks like a not sucessfull jailbreak tentative, and now system is bricked
I also wondered about this! I don't know how the OS works in the Switch, but I do know on the Wii they used iOS libraries and the versions could end up incorrect when soft modded incorrectly which would result in lots of stuff just not loading or crashing etc. Maybe they carried forward a similar kind of OS and it is perhaps half updated for homebrew, breaking compatibility with lots of stuff?!?
There is no jailbreak for switch, RCM payload injection is done on a boot by boot basis, so once it's off it's no longer booted into that rcm payload and needs to be sent again, it's not permanent without a hardware device installed inside of it
System bricking or bricked would mean no power on at all too
There's also no softmod as many people keep claiming, it's a hardware injected payload, either via pc, phone or another device, it cannot be done without a hardware device on each boot
@@AnotherDud3 Thanks for the info! That means the problem is almost certainly RAM!
@@GadgetUK164 That or the APU is my bet
@@AnotherDud3 i think na lot of people here in Brazil don't agree with you...
There are a loooootttttt of switch unlocked here....one of my closest friends has one ...he download any kind of game and plays. The only thing that he can't do is online matchs.
Because here switch has totally price... $500 the console and $60,$70 the game..that here in Brazil If you convert almost 3 minimum wage for the console and 1/3 for the games.
despite the final result, the fixes you did were great. You have come a long way over the years. Pretty sure your other viewers will have the solution and I look forward to a revisit.
Are you growing your santa face fuzz?
I think it has been softmodded in the past due to the big memory Card.I would install the softmod again, Im pretty sure it Will fix the issue when doing a downgrade. I know i was reading something about upgrading the softmod to a newer update would put the gameslot inactive.
Yes, "Unpatched" in the item listing is not there for nothing
There is no such thing as a softmod, RCM payloads are injected on a one time basis, unless you have a modchip installed it has to be sent at every turn on from off with some form of hardware, whether that be a sam86 or phone or pc or some other device, Atmosphere is having issues with 11.0 and gamecarts, but this isn't running atmosphere nor is it running 11.0 software.
That happens with iPhones when trying to swap parts
I wouldn’t doubt these would be bricked when swapping parts and doing an update to
Vince, I saw a video where a guy grabbed a length of solder wick with his soldering pliers. It heated up the wick enough that he could just drag it across the pads and it would absorb the solder. Just thought I'd leave that tip in case you wanted to try it.
Nice job!
Another great job happy days
You can try and change the nand flash memory if you have spare switch boards ... But they are probably all differently programmed , but you could try, i dont know much about these switches. Nothing to lose here , or maybe there is a way to unbrick the system in some way. search around.Anyways excelent work with the connector , proud of you xD
It looks like this switch was previously hacked and running a softmod, hence the reason it appeared like the switch had been factory reset when you first switched it on, as the last owner was maybe booting with those hardware jig things to start the tegra chip in service mode.
It looks like the softmod has caused corruption or something very wrong with the software side, and now isn't starting games.
Maybe if you can re-mod it you can get around the problem with softmods and such and get the switch to play games again
Excellent work on fixing the switch physically though!! Great vid
Hi, great video, did you check the region settings?
Cool. Good work
Handy little video
Oh i spoke to soon.............but a great teaching vlog matey
Hi dear Vince ... try to put in other emmc module if you have it ... best regards and stay safe.
Amazing video!!!!
It has been modded before and the game cart hasn't been updated I believe
mod it again and you should be able to fix the issue
Great video
A new "My Mate Vince" video - wohoo . Just wondering if it's better to disconnect the battery
to get a more meaningful measurement of current going in - detecting short circuit etc. - watching
too much Rossmann maybe.
Hi vince, nice video as usual. I've been doing a lot of ebay switch refurbs to raise capital for a repair shop. In 30 or so repairs I've had this issue once, I managed to get it working but only by downloading all the ID keys and rebuilding the firmware on a brand new chip. I couldn't get it to work by rebuilding on the existing chip, I'm assuming there's some sort of artifact sector that remains even with a full wipe, but I'm not super versed in the nuisances of software. Hope this helps :)
As i mentioned about half year ago, with that soldering method you MUST unplug NAND it's creates tension on the NAND-connector and when you heat it from the other side it can get loose, check it, mb that the reason why it can't play games. Look from PC what is on the SD card that will give you an idea if console was Jailbroken.
Hi, been watching you trying to fix the switch did you try the sd card that came with it?
Buddy be careful from the fumes from solder they are toxic be safe ✌️
That MMV Massive Tube tune sound almost exactly like Tree Dude in-game music :D
So Vince I have a question. Is your personal switch named "my mate switch"
no it's marmite :D
😂😂
@@Boogie_the_cat huh? wtf you on about... "vince" (and pretty much any brit) would know exactly the reference.
It's cool watching people with the passion to repair these electronics
Also, I recently broke the 'L' button for the joy-cons and I don't have the skill to solder it so I was wondering where to buy it?
If you go on Google and search the part you want, strangely enough it will find the part and let you buy them! It's like magic.
This guy is amazing
I missed this type of videos lol
Me to!
The Switch killer is back.
Nice, love the 25% discount with purchase of SD card
Hi vince,
I would look and see if the console is unpatched with the serial number.
If it is unpatched then use one of those recovery mode clips that slot down the right hand side joycon rail.
Look up using Hekate and follow the instructions with the recovery mode clip.
You will be able to identify what is wrong with Hekate.
Either read up or use CZcams theres plenty of information.
I strongly recommend backup the entire memory card, just in case the information is contained on there.
Otherwise you might have a switch that you can not unbrick.
If you have accidentally formatted sd card then use one of those sd recovery programs to try and find the files.
Also gbatemp or maxconsole forum members may be able to help you.
Best of Luck ....hopefully this is going to be interesting on the revisit.
Holy moly
Recently tried soldering and it's collosal blob of solder compared to that
Also my gc joycon is still going crazy
I haven't finished watching the video but I think I already know what the problem is. It's possible they enabled something called "AutoRCM", which makes it more convenient to boot into hack payloads, but effectively bricks the Switch as far as normal booting is concerned. This would explain why it was drawing power as if it were turned on even though it doesn't appear to be; a Switch in RCM looks the same as a Switch that's turned off.
Try following the instructions on switch.hacks.guide for booting a payload, except when it tells you to use the jig and hold down Volume+ and Power to boot into RCM, just push Power, no jig required. If I'm correct, it'll work, and you should be able to boot into a payload to disable AutoRCM. Or to boot CFW.
*EDIT:* Actually now that I see it works in docked mode; this wouldn't be the problem.
That may not actually be at 256 gig SD most the time people buy really cheap SD cards that say they’re this huge amount but really they’re only a small amount they’ve been tricked on the control to read something that they’re not actually now that I think about it it is technically I don’t know for sure possible that that could’ve caused the problem that we have on the switch.
YES. You normally encounter unbranded ones like that with such trickery enabled on it.
maybe should of pressed down on the connector while it was hot to get them pins seated properly, but great fix and great ebay find this one, could of been bricked jailbroken or something
Unrelated to the switch issue, but that micro SD card is likely fake. Lots of those are being sold on ebay marketed with high capacities, but in reality they're only somewhere between 8-32gb and their firmware hacked to show the high capacity. One way to test this is with a tool called "h2testw", which will write to the whole thing, try to read it, and then figure out how much data the sd card could actually hold.
Nice video Vince. Great to see you get back to switches. What are the brushes you use to clean boards with IPA called? I've been looking to get some but can't find any that look like the one's you use.
A flux brush Eric 😉 there’s loads on eBay www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1311&_nkw=flux+brush&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_sop=7&_osacat=0&_odkw=faulty+tv&_oac=1
@@wisher21uk Ah thank you very much.
@@FunnyThingsWeekly you’re welcome and if you need them a little stiffer cut the bristles
Then again you can use a tooth brush too
Vince you should have removed the emmc that can be unpluged without unsoldering anything and its vga if that breaks down the switch becames useless couse its paired to the board, you could try to unplug everything except of what you need to dock it even the screen couse that ribbon didnt look very good, switch can only be banned from online play it also can be a problem with the gpu and when it tries to display a game it gives the error and also the charge chip i dont know it might not be ok, anyway amazing video as always and pretty interesting, and i am very amazed on how you soldered that screen conector, keep it up vince :) i would like to see a revisit video, if you do it i hope you are lucky and fix the switch entirelly
You shouldve tried to play games the first time you saw it was docking because the seller said it was unpatched so maybe he tried some sort of jailbreaking and wasnt succesfull and it was playing games fine and when you updated it , you bricked it or something, if you are not succesfull with fixing it with official software ,i suggest to you , maybe you can try jailbreaking it idk , there is no loss if it doesnt work properly with official software.Hope you see this comment great fix btw you are awesome
@My Mate VINCE I know that behavior, it happens when a Switch board has been de-modded but one forgot to run the clean-up utility before removing the modchip from the Switch board. I think it's safe to say this Switch will be useless, unless you wanna reinstall the mod only to run the cleanup utility, then remove it again and see how it goes.
I like when you fix nintendo things such as the ds 3ds and switch
@25:55 with the lighting change I honestly thought that was some sort of flash back clip haha
As others have said this almost looks like dodgy ram. The switch doesn't have any memory to use for caching information.
That microsd card might be a counterfeit try using h2testw to check the real capacity (might take a long time tho)
On the eBay listing at the end it did say unpatched so it could of been soft modded and that could be causing your issue
Its the internal mem storage, it can be replaced
I have the same Idea!
Its either one of two things, the internal memory chip is damaged or someone has hacked the OS before. I ended up with one that was bricked and used software from the homebrew community to reflash the official software. When I initially reflashed the software it was an older version than what it originally had installed so I could only boot it with the rcm jig and it gave a similar error and and refused to play games of any kind till I made it update to the newest OS version. It quite honestly could be an error with the fuse check.
7:40 i Thoght he was making noise by screwing it
Have you tried booting the switch in safe mode?
Also I've had a few with blue screen on death, now I haven't been able to reball them, but I have got them working in testing perfectly by using a quick grip on the GPU.
maybe games will run if the solder balls under the GPU are making a better contact.
That being said, I agree with the guy you said it sounds like bad memory somewhere.
but double check the fan is working, as I've had lites with strange behaviour with the fan, after water damage.
Time to follow Northbridge Fix
Did you get a new video camera? The video looks better than your older videos and it's in 50 fps.
If you decide to explore the fault any further, you can probably append the extra footage to the end of this video instead of making a separate revisit video (since it’s unlisted).
Thanks Operational, I don't think I will be getting this fixed before it goes fully live. The fault is even stranger than the video suggests....I have been buying up very cheap games on the Nintendo eShop (some only 8p!!!) and out of about 6 of the new games 3 of them work perfectly. The other 3 new games exhibit the same faulty behaviour. I have made the Switch my primary console and it makes no difference. I don't think I will be getting to the bottom of this one unfortunately.
@@Mymatevince This sounds like a problem with the firmware, as the same thing happens when you modded a Switch with a custom firmware and don't update the "sigpatches" for the newest firmware. Some games will work, some won't as they need new keys.
If this Switch was modded, then maybe the previous owner installed a newer firmware via homebrew and it failed. Maybe that's also why it was reset to factory settings, as the previous owner tried to fix the broken firmware.
If you can, check if the Switch is one of the earlier models that can be modded. This can be done via the serial number, if you still have that. The maybe try reflashing the firmware.
Oh, and this Switch isn't banned in any way. If it was, you wouldn't be able to access the eShop at all. Even if it was, you would still be able to launch games that you already installed or physical own.
Hope that helps and thanks for another great video!
@@_Offline This helps a lot! Thanks Offline😀👍
@@_Offline i can agree with you, ive run an emummc on my switch and once sigpatches was outdated, most games wouldnt launch and games would crash on startup, the white screen is odd tho, ive never seen that so its possible it is a firmware issue
@@_Offline That's interesting, but Vince bought this off eBay without any knowledge that it was modded, if it even is. Usually when homebrewing devices, one would have a backup of the firmware before writing a custom firmware to the Switch, but what if you don't have it? I'm not sure if you can use any other Switch's backed up firmware to restore it.
In a simple scenario, from eBay Vince did get plenty of working hardware with a faulty NAND/motherboard.
Salut Vince je te suis de France et j'apprécie énormément ton travail
Pourrais tu me dire quel fer à souder tu utilises
Merci
You need to either reflash the entire stock firmware or reinstall a softmod. If it was modded and the system was updated it'll clock down the game slot so no type of game will work.
I pre tin the bottom on the connector then align the connector and heat bottom. Had almost 100% success rate soldering on those connector. That LCD connector for some reason is problematic overall I noticed.
Another trick i can do is boost the low battery issue by using 3.7v charger and the dmm probes with the wires attached to the charger and that way i can monitor the charge rate once it get to 4.2v it good to go again
Hi Vince. Looks like the internal storage is corupted. Maybe you can try insert a known good sdcard and try install the game on it. I'm just guessing, but I don't think it's difficult to try
I dont think 250gb sd cards are made
@@iainwilson7671 Then thinking is not your strong point.
