- Our 3rd EC Survival Series story features Billy Gensmer, a brave esophageal cancer fighter who underwent surgery after being diagnosed with Stage 4 in 2017. He had surgery in 2020 and he is helping others stay hopeful while advocating for fighters to take charge of their health.
Thanks for this interview. I have done the chemoradiation and will have the surgery later this week. It was good to see Billy in a good mental space
There is hope. I was diagnosed in 2006. Fortunately, I had an endoscopy for a stomach problem and they found bad cells in my esophagus at that time, so stage 1. I was offered an esophagectomy which I accepted. It took about 6 months to recover and, like Billy, I sleep elevated. It’s also difficult to lay flat for any length of time, so that could be a problem for some people. It still is for me. But I’m still here after 17 years, eating and drinking normally as long as I’m sensible. My problem was caused by smoking and excessive alcohol consumption most evenings after work, and eating a meal before going to bed. Don’t do it people!!
Thank you for sharing your experience and I’ve heard the same from many survivors about laying down and change of how they rest. Bless you for making it through the surgery! The pet scan I took yesterday will reveal the full picture of my cancer when I see my oncologist in a few days- and type/stage through 2nd endoscopy the previous day
