So whos a 4*TOWN fan now? Also I forgot to mention, I actually really appreciate Pixar covering topics like this and real life experiences. It's a very clever (but weird) movie that I actually would watch again now surprisingly because I think I'd like it better, so it's a 7.1!
I'm not sure how I felt about it honestly. I liked the message, the music was good, I didn't love the art style and the story felt a little draggy at times. They did nail the teen girls, and I liked that they had the girl with the insulin pump on her arm. I do have my own 12 year old ticking time bomb and I'm dreading this whole thing so maybe that's it.

So, we watched it yesterday! Previous comment said we were going to see it in our local movie theater... but as it turned out after I posted that comment, I found out it was ONLY on Disney+! It WAS supposed to be in the theater, but I guess Disney pulled it at the last minute. 🤷♀ We watched it on D+ and it was enjoyable. I also like the fact it talked about some important topics... like growing up, teen crushes, accepting yourself, trusting your friends (honestly, I wish I had had friends like Meimei's when I was that age. I know my daughter does too...), overprotective/overburdening parents (mother). Was it a perfect film? No, it did have its flaws... but overall it was a fun! Still liked Encanto better tho... 😉
I don't mind that the characters acted cringe; let's be honest most teens (especially early teens) are pretty cringey. It's ok, because they're just kids. I think a lot of shows have teens as being so cool and grown up we forget that they really are still children mostly.

@@idontknowhowtochangemyusername Dude I was SO scared of anyone looking through my sketchbook at 12-14 lol. I drew a lot of bloody edgy stuff, anime, Warrior Cats, and especially MLP fanart at the time and thought it was so embarrassing lmao.
It is nice to see a movie where "cringe" is normalized so younger audiences and even older audiences can have something to relate too. This felt so much more real than the glorified beauty standards of today..

I love how they essentially made a “cringe” into a character building tool. They aren’t trying to pander, or be hip. They are just making them Young awkward kids

I actually didnt interpret the friends as using her. It was almost weirdly refreashing that when she was scared about using the panda they all just immediately said "ok, we'll just change our plans". I feel like so often plots like this make moments like this into a fight. And even when abby says she should stay a panda it was more because this was the only time mei lived for herself than her mother. this hits harder for me because my own friends have only ever been pushy to me to get me to open up, so these scenes hit a different way.
It’s bloody amazing how loving and supportive her friends were! Their instant acceptance, the effort they put in with Meilin’s plan, their comforting words, their willingness to NOT GO THROUGH with going to the concert? ETC!
I cannot BELIEVE our dude thought they were using her! Where the hell does one find friends like this????
@@niyaodom1944 so many plots go that way its super easy to just expect the friends to be selfish. But even when merium said keep the panda, she dint even fight mei when she said she cant, she just explained how much she likes actually being able to spend time with her friend

The part where Miriam asks "What if you kept the Panda?" wasn't about using her......it was asking her to keep her new-found confidence and independence of thought; that there was more to her life than just her Mom's ambitions for her.
Guys never really realize how thirsty teenage girls are. I am very grateful that I had no art skills at 13 because I shudder at what I might have created. And I'm not sure the boy band worship ever really leaves, I think it just evolves. Look at your own comment sections for proof 🤣
As someone who had mediocre art skills back then, I once got grounded bc my mom found inappropriate lesbians in my backpack.

@@naolucillerandom5280 same but my drawings are from a BL comics lol i was 12 turning 13 and my mom saw them and i told her it was my older cousins drawing she got yelled at and we both got our phones taken away i had to pay her some money because she took the blame for me lol i got grounded because the drawings are taped in my room

I think drawing a perfect chalk circle on that uneven ground was the most unrealistic part of this movie 😂

its just his "50 years of experience" showing off. there are school professors who do that on white boards. nothing snaps your focus back to the lesson like a random perfect circle. clearly its some sort of jedi mind trick. ;D

"she did all this because of a concert though" nah it's what the concert represents! doing what her family wants represents the expectation to be "perfect", a stifling environment where she can't be her most joyful self and things & people she likes are looked down on. going to the concert (& keeping the panda) represents freeing that side of her and being able to express herself and be with the most important people to her.
Thank you! This seems to be a thing with some reactors! They either don't get or simply misinterpret what the movie is saying completely. It seems to be what us Brits call a "marmite" movie...you either like it or you don't. For me, the message is spelled out pretty clearly. I sometimes wonder if some reactors don't get this on purpose. (I'm not saying Welchy is one of those though).
As a 21 year old with a tween for a sister I feel like I’ve gained a new superpower, I have become immune to the cringe in this movie, the only two times I cringed were at the mom humiliating her daughter and when the 4 town guy started crying.
I like to imagine he cried because a giant red panda just ruined their concert and the other singers all decided they should go back to sing when he thought they should run for it.
Damn what a flex I had to skip parts of the movie the first time cause of the cringe 😬

As a woman who grew up in the early-mid 2000s and around 90s culture and music and as someone who has strict parents that at one point made me feel like I wasn’t good enough even though my grades were perfect, I related heavily to this. Around when I was 13 or 14 that’s when it rlly clicked for me that even though I grew up doing everything my parents asked of me that they still didn’t trust me or give me room to be myself. And it was even worse bc my parents didn’t ever explain anything puberty related. Everything I learned, I learned at school, but bc I’m from Texas, even that was minimal. I related to basically every aspect of this movie including the embarrassing moment of the mom finding my embarrassing art in a journal. I’m also a poc so I rlly relate to the idea that respecting your parents comes first. So for me this movie was genuinely amazing. I get a lot of guys can’t relate to this but I feel like you don’t need to have grown up as a little girl to relate to the themes of growing up.
I really related to this being a person of colour, trying to lease your parents does come first but while doing this we don’t understand how to understand our own emotions. Went through that growing up 😅
To add on to that, I think this "I have to relate to the characters" is just a flimsy veiled excuse. There's plenty of characters envolved movies that no one can completely relate to. Look at the aliens movies , or terminator or any other action movie. Movies like Star Wars. Look at horror movies where everyone is killed off one by one until there's a sole survivor. Zombie movies or the like. Look at other children's movies like Finding Nemo, or The My Little Pony movies. or any of the pokemon movies. There's a ton of movies that people find enjoyable and I doubt they can relate to every single one.
I still thought this movie was amazing even if there are aspects I can't relate to. Like what it's like to have an ancestral power handed down that turns you into a red panda. That's never happened to me, but it doesn't need to for me to love this movie.
I appreciate he doesn't seem uncomfortable of the fact of the mentions of puberty, the fact that Mei is and her friend are a little boy thirsty and girls having periods it's refreshing.

This movie was very very relatable to me and I love that it shows a nice loving friendship between girls. And I thought it was very clever in what was showing and portraying. Teen years are hard for any girl and their moms.
Every scene where I though "wtf, why are the characters acting like this", I later realized were EXACTLY how the characters would have acted in real life. I use to take photos at high school proms (with a backdrop and props and staged stuff) and I always had to set up my stuff so I wasn't looking towards the dance floor. Nothing but cringe over there.
This movie nailed that perfectly and didn't shy away from it. For that Pixar deserves credit. Too many films shy away from how real teenagers act so they can avoid cringe. This film is unapologetically "real" in terms of how kids act.
Momma, buzz in to the front office. Leave Mei Mei's pads there, and have someone call for Mei Mei to go to the office. Then she can discreetly be given the pads, stuff them in her bag, and hit up the bathroom on her way back to class. That's how you give your girl what she needs, without mortifying her for life.
I'm happy than my own mother didn't do that.
I remember being alone at home in the toilets when I discovered I had my first periods. I was 12
I have to admit that I really enjoyed the movie. It was weird and really out there, and that's what I liked about it. I really enjoy when animated projects that don't shy away from family problems, teenage drama or social issues. The characters, animation and voice acting were all done very well. They did a good job of showing how scary changing and growing up can be, but it happens for a reason.
But like any other Disney movie, the problem is mostly resolved to quickly. Forgiving and moving on is important, but its not easy (like they make it seem in their movies). Ming did the exact same thing to Mei that her mother did to her - and she didn't see that? If nothing is ever going to be good enough, you shouldn't push a child to be perfect. Healing can happen...but it takes time.
(Ming shouldn't need to apologize. She may have given her mother that scar, but it was Wu's controlling and overbearing nature that caused such an act.)
People may call the portrayal of Chinese culture in this movie racist or stereotypical; but it isn't if its all fact. Most families of Asian cultures are very controlling and pass that toxic quirk to their children. Parents shouldn't push their desires onto their children, because than the children never get to live their own lives. If your kids rebel, its most likely because you're refusing to listen to them.
If there's a sequel, I seriously hope that Disney doesn't tone down the problems and issues of growing up.

This movie made me holler with laughter with the way it portrayed tween girls, so raunchy and so funny i loved it. Everything from beginning to end was so ridiculous and over the top, i was hooked from her cringey monologue strut down the street 😍 perfection

Her friends weren't using her just encouraging her to be herself and be happy since they observed how happy she is with the panda.
I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when I was 6 years old (I’m 21 now.) and I’ve never seen T1D representation in a movie, so I was really happy to see it in this one. There are two students with insulin pump sites at the school. You can best see the site on the girl with the butterfly clips at 13:07.
Watching this again I need to stress this, they did not use her. Not once did they try to push her to do what they wanted, they tried to encourage her to be her, the reason the wanted her to keep the panda was because she only ever left her bubble with it. It was all her idea in the end

I just watched this last night. The movie has a very interesting mix of early 00's and current cultures. For instance, "sus" was definitely not a slang term yet, but tomagatchis were all the rage and every teacher hated them. XD
Regarding the movie itself: 4*Town gave me such nostalgia vibes for N*Sync and Backstreet Boys, lol. I didn't have this type of pressure growing up, though, so it was a little hard to relate, but I enjoyed the characters and appreciated the cartoony Luca-ish style they went with.
Overall would be happy to watch again!
They did completely replicate the late 90s/early 00s boy bands. If you were there, you know these dudes would have fit right in!
I related a lot. especially as a budding artist in the early 00s, realizing I was sexual, discovering music (I grew up in a strict house where I wasn't allowed to listen to music cuz it's "of the devil"), all that. even had a tamagatchi. didn't really mind that it wasn't 100% accurate to the time period

I watched it with my family and we were all like "YEAHHH!" When Mei came down off the roof and tackled him. Of course I didn't want Mei to actually hurt him, but Tyler was being such a buttmunch to Mei and her friends on top of blackmailing her.

I’m not a fan of the idea a certain gender can’t comprehend something related to the other but i really think this film can’t totally be understood by a man. I know we both hit puberty but we have a very different experience with it and this movie portrays it perfectly! Also for the mother daughter relationship, the “it’s too soon”, etc… I feel like it would be hard to get a relate to if you haven’t gone through theses experiences

There is like at least 2 China towns, and entire north Markham Asian community in Toronto. Also other Asian communities
OK did not know that. in fairness I don't know to much about the City, But hey you learn something new everyday. We also have a Chinatown where I'm from, theirs one in London which is part of the West end and one in Manchester which are more like streets then towns.
Its funny cos "would I watch it again? Probably not" is basically what I said to myself about encanto after the first time I watched it (I have watched it a lot now) as well as this film. (Which is also growing on me.)
I think I was just a bit too critical on my first viewing, not giving myself the chance to properly accept the characters or meanings, and taking it at more of a personal surface level thing instead.
I just saw Turning Red last night. This is a feel good film. It is a breath of fresh air. The scenes can be cringey but in a good way
as it makes the film relatable. It is nice to see a character who is quirky but not in a "I am like other girls" approach. I like how her friends are supportive of her. I am glad they didn't take advantage of it. Seeing Mei simping over crushes reminds me of my teenage years except they are anime crushes. I did attend my first concert at 14 except it was Michele Buble (I went to see it with my family but it was enjoyable).
Although I am not a straight A student, I do want to do well in my studies and not let my parents down. The dynamic between Mei and mom reminds me of my relationship with my mom. It sometimes can be lonely when you think you are only going through this. The fear of having part of your individuality being taken away from you is real. If anything, the portrayal of mother-daughter dynamic, conflict and generational trauma in the film feels real. Although the climax feels rushed, it made me cry. Sure we have our own disagreements but I am glad that she is supportive of me going to art school.
As a Chinese I can confirm that the "you lose/ gain weight" remarks, asking you to eat more or what you are doing happens during family gatherings. And yes, they even ask you if are currently in a relationship. The vibe her aunts give reminds me of the typical Singaporean aunties I see in public. I am sure that everyone (regardless of culture) have their fair share of "auntie" moments.
You should check out The Joy Luck Club. Like Turning Red and Encanto, it deals with generational trauma, Asian culture and mother-daughter relationship.
My favorite ridiculous criticism of this film was that it was somehow "woke" which just goes to show how that word has basically lost any real meaning outside of "something that's different that I don't like."

@@ARCtheCartoonMaster I don't know, when I was growing up I kinda just...knew what my cycle meant? My cousin tried to explain it to me when I started but all I could think was shut up I know this already just go get me a pad and leave me alooone. Granted we also went into the subject in junior high but I was already like a year into it.
As for the geography thing (or education in general), it can sometimes be a two-way street. My teachers taught it I just hated it, therefore, didn't pay attention. Thankfully no job I had or wanted, involve me needing to know the world map on an intimate level.

@ARC the Cartoon Master I do agree that the American sex education system sucks ass and is terrible. I'm glad I was homeschooled and got actually real decent sex education from informative books also websites like Plannedparenthood that teaches about sexuality or different birth control methods and so forth.

I JUST watched this movie like right now with my best friend on Disney plus groupwatch and the part where Mei sees teenage Ming crying I got chills because my first thought was that Ming has a wounded inner child she never really moved past hurting her mother so she was stuck like that until Mei showed her compassion and then she was able to heal. Also the scene where Mei is sobbing to her friends and then they just start singing her favorite song to cheer her up like I teared up man

I’ve seen several reactions to this now but I think yours is my favorite. Idk why, but you guessing the mom thinking period before she said it, it’s kinda neat. You also didn’t seem weirded out by it. Most other reactors I watched at least had a moment of being weirded out. Tbh from the personality you put forward on CZcams I wouldn’t have expected such a mature response from you, no offense. You were just immediately chill with it.
I also appreciate you noticing Sun Yee. When she first makes the portal she seems not disappointed but past that, resigned. Her family had abandoned the blessing that had protected their family for generations. Deciding it’s too much of an inconvenience, calling it a beast and uncontrollable. But when Mei decided to keep it Sun Yee was able to express her true self as well, the red panda. I see that forehead boop as like her saying “Thank you.”
I believe he's crying because you gotta sing from the heart lol. I'd also say how the kids behave is pretty much on point for how teen girls are.
Honestly it was when the grandma hugged her daughter that made me cry the most 😭
I just watched this movie with me 4 year old daughter and we LOVED it! She had a meltdown because we couldn't watch it a second time in a row.

I immediately messaged my childhood besties after watching the movie and we were having a blast talking about our cringe pasts 😆

Well I guess it is for some to not understand completely, but like my main message I liked the most was the red panda reflecting the period.
I grew up with a headstrong mum that made sure to not be afraid of what happens to my body. But society doesn't like period, the pain or the things that come with it.
And with the period coming people expect just to stay silent and in the cases of school or work obedient because they do not care or think it is not actually relevant.
I am a person who suffers with shitty pain every time so it's nice to see a movie basicially saying, embrace your period and do not hide it because others don't like it.
Don't flaunt it in everybody's face but also don't hide it because why should you

I wish they made a sequel. Like if there's an enemy ancestor who has beef with sun yee. Imagine if the enemy ancestor comes to Toronto because he heard about Mei and her panda. He stalks her and captures her into like his trap and then no matter how much she tries to break free from his trap it's like red panda proof but her mother her aunties and her friends and family come to save her and mei becomes invincible with all of her friends and family's help and beats the enemy ancestor and she still keeps her panda.
I absolutely loved this movie. It made me cry lol a great reaction, always looking forward to your videos.

Second, I cried my friggin eyes out at how close to home Mei-Mei's storyline is for me after turning eighteen months ago. Like her ending monologe could quoted by me in how much my life has changed, Abby is another side of me that expressed how I am. My entire persona is in the movie through Mei and her gals lmao 😂
The film is a whole lotta fun, hilarious, and enjoyable. Another success in my book for Pixar!! 👏✨
This movie is more of the emotional aspects of puberty and I like it was kinda cringe cause man that's what tweens are like. I certainly remember every single tween was strange in their own way but I admire some who had confidence cause they seem to be happy being that way. People are so sensitive to cheesy things but life is cheesy and ya just have to embrace it. The director did such a good job and I applaud her good work. 👏
I find it bull that people just think of periods with this movie.
As someone who tries so hard to be absolutely perfect this movie really started healing something inside of me. I cried so hard at the moment between Mei Mei and her mom, at the end on the other side of the portal thing. They were words I needed to hear. It felt like everything was being torn apart and sewn back together at the same time. I just watched this movie, I went into it thinking I would hate it, but I cried my heart out at parts and it’s honestly in my top 10 favorite Disney movies, sure it had its points where it was a little cringy but I liked it honestly, it made it more relatable in a way

You should watch boxtrolls. it's a little creepy, but it's such a genuinly good film.
For the slight controversy over this movie is ridiculous. Women have periods people grow up already! The menstrual cycle is the reason why women can give birth anyway so why treat it as a taboo? When its something that's half of the human population deals with daily, how come young boys puberty issues are seen as normal or as no big deal but suddenly if your talking about girls developing sexuality or womanhood then its seen as "disgusting" , really talking about what women and young girls puberty /period issues should be more normalized in society.

Tiger parenting is the key reason why you don't like Mei Mei.. You just confused why Mei Mei lied to her mom, why she threw her friend under the bus without realising how angry the tiger mother would become if you tell the truth.. My mom is a tiger mother, and I would do the same thing as Mei if it happens to me at 13, It's sucks yes, but if you are 13, trust me it's better to do that than fighting an angry tiger at home.. Unless you could get a job,find house or shelter and can life on your own without food or money from your parents..
All tiger parents especially tiger mothers want their kids to fear them so they wouldn't ever gonna betray or even arguing you.. They are stubborn, strict, not a good listeners, and always thought they always right because they have more experience and see more things even before you born..
So if you make a movie blaming "Tiger Parenting" method on the nose straight away, All Tiger Parents would ignore your message and say Pixar exaggerated it or Pixar didn't know how to properly do Tiger Parenting..
Which is sucks.. They should learn that forcing your kids to lie or the kids would be slapped with tiger paw is not the right thing.. They should learn that over controlling the kids future and give them immense pressure was never a good thing.. And they should learn to not just judge the book by it's cover, don't judge their kid's friends are all the same and they all useless because they wouldn't feed you or give their money for free..

To be honest, the 4*TOWN thing was just nice in a way but the songs though were stuck in my head for months.

The reason Robaire (4town crying boi) was crying was because he sang from the heart in that moment, it wasn't funny or cringey, just very heart-felt, this movie made me cry for many reasons some being the very... odd relationship with my family
