    What is SEL? Social-emotional learning (SEL) is the process of developing the self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills that are vital for school, work, and life success. The creators of Second Step® programs show what social-emotional skills are and the important role they play throughout our lives.

    What’s strange about this, is they are finding that’s children who aren’t learning this at home aren’t allowing the information to sink in while at school. Parents seems to be a bigger factor in the behavior of their children than our schools would have hoped.

    I believe that schools should incorporate this more often, I’m no expert but I’m quite sure that mental health is greatly important in order to prevent suicides and school shootings from happening. It is something many people look over and often ignore.

    Hi, I want to ask for your opinion. So I had just finished senior high school. Before that, I didn't mind socializing at all, all I did is studying so I can be the best of the best. Since senior high school, I started to mind about social, and I started social interactions. A lot of people bullied me then, because I spoke to people like shit, and I did not even know how to answer them. Because of that, I was depressed like fuck. Because of that, I started learning to socialize, and finally I felt good. However, my grades were lower due to depression, and now I feel broke. I cannot achieve being the best student at school, and I am still striving to get a good university. How can learning socializing become hard and make grades don't go well, since it is not that hard for others to maintain balance?

    • @committeeforchildren
      @committeeforchildren  Před 5 lety +2

      Thank you for reaching out Jeremy, we know it takes a lot of courage to ask for help. Socializing can be very hard in high school, and bullying is a difficult issue. We’re sorry to hear that you were bullied. It sounds like you’ve done a lot of work to get better at socializing. That shows maturity and we’re glad you’re feeling good now. It might feel like you’re the only person who struggles with socializing, but you’re not alone. Many high school students deal with this. It is a normal part of growing up. Please consider talking with a counselor or another adult at school you trust about your feelings. They can help you learn to socialize and make a plan to help you with your grades.

    Well I have to say that in such a case Social Emotional Learning is Fabulous and very much needed. With the world of people going through this pandemic it is very hard to get by by being isolated as we were. But at the same time to teach empathy is By far not easy. The mess of not understanding others goes deep there is the attitude of being bullies! And this has deep roots from even before the Pandemic.

    I’m trying to make sense of this from a Cognitive Science perspective… Sweller says biologically primary skills cannot be taught (these get picked up automatically by the student) while biologically secondary skills (like math, reading and writing) need to be taught explicitly. Aren’t SEL skills biologically primary? If they are secondary, is there an SEL curriculum? In the video I heard that students who have strong SEL skills do better in school and life in general but that doesn’t mean it can be taught - just that there is a relationship between being “well adjusted” and life skills that are valued in society. Help me see how SEL is teachable, please. Thank you.
