How to use ambient reverb before modulation and delay on your pedalboard

  • Quick pedal order tip that lets you get unique ambient tones by running a long drone reverb into modulation and delay pedals.
    Most of us are probably familiar with the standard way of running your pedalboard signal chain, which is something like this: Tuner-
    Comp - Drives - Modulation - Delay - Reverb.
    But the real fun happens when you stray from the path most travelled. When you make up your own rules, switch things around and see what wonderful textures appear out of nowhere. Hence we intentionally seek to break the rules in this Tonal Teamwork episode, where we move the reverb from the ending of the chain to the very beginning, creating beautiful ambient textures by running the stretchy, droning reverb from the EarthQuaker Afterneath into the Anasounds Phase Lag Phaser, Fairfield Circuitry Meet Maude Analog Delay and EarthQuaker Devices Avalanche Run Delay/Reverb
    Guitars used:
    Fender US Telecaster
    Pedals used:
    Earthquaker Devices Afterneath - thepedalzone.com/afterneath-v3/
    Earthquaker Devices Avalanche Run - thepedalzone.com/avalanche-run/
    Anasounds Phase Lag Phaser
    Fairfield Circuitry meet Maude Analog Delay
    Amps used:
    Fender Deluxe Reverb 65 RI

    My general rule is delay into reverb is a natural style sound, and reverb into delay is dreamy. Also, the modulated delay after the reverb was astounding!

    I have a EHX SuperEgo which is a Freeze/sustain synth engine. The most amazing part is, it has an effects loop

    I found out how amazing reverb into delay was by chance. I by accident had put the delay Before the reverb and I didn’t realize I had done this. I was getting this incredible ambient sound and my role in this musical situation was to be the spacey ambient volume swell with slide guitar guy. Lol...Everyone was commenting on how amazing it sounded and asked what I was running, I looked down at my pedals to begin explaining my signal chain and then I realized my reverb was running into the delay. This was an aha moment for me to say the least... great tutorial, I have many of the pedals you are using here and appreciate you sharing, yet again another great vid.

    Great rundown video. Thanks! I really dig putting the delay before my modulation because it does accentuate the delayed signal as it’s passing through my phaser/flanger/tremolo/chorus. I’ve been doing it that way for a while now. My friend told me about it a few years ago. I do a lot of ambient/reggae delayed sounds so it sounds cool doing it this way. It’s sort of like the modulation is warping the delayed sound and you can manipulate that specific signal. Lots of control there that’s really fun to play with!

    Totally agree on reverb before the delay. Essentially the delay acts as a sustainer of the reverb effect, like a drone. Delay before reverb just makes the room sound bigger. So it depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Another cool trick is to go straight Tame Impala and put a dynacomp after the reverb to super sustain it.

    I think that YT must be listening to me practice. This video came up in my recommendations after I changed my pedal order -- I actually had been putting my MXR M300 reverb before my DOD Rubberneck delay, but this morning decided to switch things up and put the reverb last, per the "usual wisdom," and found better clarity in both the repeats and the shimmer, and better control over self-oscillation. As you say, don't worry about rules or consensus, try things. Perhaps in my case, it's a matter of how my particular reverb and delay interact with each other. But I certainly will be trying my modulation pedals post reverb.

      @louderthangod Před 5 lety

      rocker dave I doubt it would change much of anything since he’s running the amp so clean. Most use the effects loop to put the delays and modulations after the amp distortion. With his set up it would just be about the eq placement which is less impactful.

    I noticed when you clicked on your Afterneath that it started to give off a high frequency hiss. Does that drive you crazy? Mine does that and I have gone back and forth from kicking it off of my board because of this. I did however figure out that if you keep your Drag knob past 12oclock the hiss is not so bad.

    • @thepedalzone
      @thepedalzone  Před 4 lety +1

      No, doesn’t bother me at all. You don’t notice it once the music is playing. On top of that I rarely use super low drag settings. I mainly use Afterneath for smooth long reverb tones, hence Drag is almost always maxed out for me

    • @thepedalzone
      @thepedalzone  Před 5 lety +1

      You usually run delays into reverbs. On top of that I like to run more analog/tape-voiced delays into digital delays. So my preferred routing would probably be Obscura -> DD7 -> Polara. But mess around with it. Nothing's carved in stone ☺

    • @Marta-nl1xe
      @Marta-nl1xe Před 5 lety

      @@thepedalzone I watched also your another episode and decided to put polara-> obscura -> dd7. It gives me interesting texture, although I'm wondering if it's not too dirty for electric or acoustic guitar as week. • @Marta-nl1xe
      @Marta-nl1xe Před 5 lety

      Ach, and after polara I have also chorus. So it's polara -> chorus, obscura -> dd7. It creates nice pads. The only problem I've discovered is low level of signal in boss in case of looping. In a delay it works well. I found messing around with gain and a noise gate improves it, but who has time messing with noise gate when looping, playing clean, using a wah wah and a fuzz... wah wah is loud as hell and I need to turn the knobs of my gate before I use them. Just before my solo. So much potential wasted 🙈
