  • Andahuaylillas; The Sistine Chapel of America
Perhaps the most beautiful example of Andean religious art - the temple of St. Peter of Andahuaylillas, best known as "the Sistine Chapel of America" is located just 39 kilometers south of the city of Cusco.
Andahuaylillas is a small village found in the southern valley of Cusco at 10,239ft above sea level, blessed with rich culture and history, nestled among fertile lands and a peaceful population of friendly locals
Its large main square is surrounded by colonial houses and adorned with aged Pisonay and palm trees. Here in the heart of the village stands the Andahuaylillas chapel. To the side of its atrium we find three crosses sculpted in andesite stone representing the Holy Trinity of Catholicism,
This beautiful chapel began its construction in the late sixteenth century and culminated in the early seventeenth century on the site of a smaller chapel that had been built previously above a primitive Inca temple, a common practice that was repeated throughout the time of colonization.
The Chapel of Saint Peter of Andahuaylillas is a fascinating sample of Andean religious art that leaves any visitor amazed. Its invaluable pieces of art, canvases, ornaments, and most importantly its beautiful murals make it an outstanding part of the Cultural Heritage of the Nation as a Historical Artistic Monument.
