Having generated a media firestorm back in the summer when band members Brian May and Roger Taylor first leaked news of a rediscovered Queen song featuring Freddie Mercury being considered for possible release, the highly anticipated ‘lost’ track, ‘Face It Alone’, drops as a simultaneous worldwide single release Thursday 13 October, 11.15am BST.
The track’s existence was first revealed by May and Taylor in a BBC radio interview at their appearance at this year’s Royal Jubilee concert at which they performed the opening with their regular singer Adam Lambert, with Roger Taylor describing it as “a little gem from Freddie that we’d kind of forgotten about”, with Brian May saying “it’s beautiful, it’s touching.”
The track’s arrival as a single leads in a November 18 release of a new revisiting of the band’s 13th album, The Miracle, the band’s penultimate to be released in Freddie Mercury’s lifetime, which now becomes available in a lavish 8-disc Queen The Miracle Collector’s Edition box set format.
Among its contents, the expanded set includes The Miracle Sessions: an hour-plus disc of further previously unreleased recordings, including six unpublished songs. Just as tantalising for fans, the audio includes the band’s candid spoken exchanges on the studio floor in London and Montreux, giving the most revealing window yet into the four members’ creative process and the joy, in-jokes and banter on their return to working together.
‘Face It Alone’ was originally recorded during the band’s historic 1988 sessions for that album, a prolific period which saw the band lay down around 30 tracks, many of which were never released, but remained among those that didn’t make the final album cut. It was rediscovered when the band’s production and archive team returned to those sessions to work on The Miracle box set reissue.
“We’d kind of forgotten about this track,” admits Roger Taylor, “but there it was, this little gem. It’s wonderful, a real discovery. It’s a very passionate piece”.
The single will be the first new song featuring Freddie Mercury released in over 8 years. On 2014’s Queen Forever album the band included three previously unheard tracks with Mercury, including ‘Let Me in Your Heart Again,’ ‘Love Kills’ and ‘There Must Be More to Life Than This.’
Speaking of the rediscovered track, Brian May says: “I’m happy that our team were able to find this track. After all these years, it’s great to hear all four of us … yes, Deacy is there too … working in the studio on a great song idea which never quite got completed … until now!”

I got chills when I heard this song. As one of the biggest Queen fans last 47 years, I feel I know and have heard all their songs. So, about 3-4 months ago, I’m house cleaning and I’ve got Spotify,as always, playing Queen songs - when all of the sudden this jewel starts. I keep cleaning and for the first few seconds after Freddie starts, I feel like “what’s playing now?” Then I recognize “that voice” - OMG - got emotional - mixed feelings of sadness, joy, nostalgia, surprise. Started reading up on the song and, so grateful to our remainder Queen members for putting this song in the spotlight and the hearts and minds of us, diehard Queen fans!! ❤

Knowing what he would've been dealing with all alone at this point in his life just makes the song that much more haunting. (The song was recorded in '88, the year following his diagnosis and several years preceding his telling anyone)

Many have said it already, but for us who were born after Freddie's death it really is quite a special experience to see new material getting released. Personally I like to think that in this moment, I feel the same emotions that my parents did back when they listened to a new Queen record for the first time. This song is amazing and it's so cool to discover it along with everyone else, regardless of our age.

I was born in 91, too late to ever be able to see Freddie live, doing what he did better than anyone. But I was raised with Queen, and their music has always been special to me. This has been an unbelievable gift. I was able to share this with my mom when I went to visit her this morning, and she just cried and laughed and talked about what it was like when Queen truly reigned. It was a special feeling to know that after she introduced me to all of their music, I was able to go full circle and at least introduce her to one more song of theirs, too.
Seeing this comment section, composed of comments in dozens of different languages, really goes to show just how truly special Queen is. There will never be another Freddie Mercury, and there will never be another Queen.

As a person who suffers from chronic mental health issues/disabilities and has lost pretty much all of my blood relatives from them not understanding me and having to let them go to protect myself, this song hits so damn deep. You really do have to face it alone sometimes in order to move on with your life. Freddie is still inspiring decades after his death. We will always love you, Freddie Mercury. Queen forever! ✊

@@DxFat Todo el tema rezuma a ochentero por los cuatro costados, no tiene NADA de noventero:
1. Estructura de la canción muy típica de los Queen de los 80 jugando con la tonalidad en menores y mayores.
2. Batería con una caja y un bombo con reverb monstruosa, ENORME (nada hay más típico de los 80 que este detalle).
3. El tipo de ganancia que usa May en la guitarra era muy propio de los ochenta, un sello inconfundible. Muchísima ganancia y el Marshall a reventar de volumen.

How did Queen hang on to this unreleased gem for so long... And why!? It's the first song in years that's given me chills. Good chills. And maybe a tear, or two. 😥 RIP Freddie. The fans will always love you, and what you're still giving to the world.
They did it because it take time to come up with a good idea to create a song out of practically nothing. Sometimes you also need the right technology to achieve this. And during the time when they firstly recorded it it was basically only an idea and nothing else. Then came Freddie with his coming out and then they rushed over to create Innuendo and then Freddie died. You know the story.
THIS is probably one of the last pieces if not THE last "new" song we will have being released from Queen. Because it shows to me that if they need to "stitch" together a song out of sth that was once almost nothing there is not much more hidden material or songs we could be getting in the future.
That being said, it is a very good job they did. And I am very thankful for that.
Maybe they could remaster Innuendo one more time in the future and give Freddie a fuller deeper voice because it sounds thin - we all know why.
Or they may also release special editions of other albums - in the same way they do with The Miracle.
Because it's not a very good song.
