"Obscured By Clouds" is my favorite Pink Floyd album, VERY underrated.
Piper at the Gates of Dawn or Meddle are my personal favorites, but objectively dark side and the wall are their best and absolutely deserve all the mainstream credit they have
This song captured a very dark time in my life, and the lyrics made me aware of my sadness.
It pushed me to make positive changes in my life, and save myself.
Amen to that....i know exactly what you mean i also was in a very bad way and pink floyd helped me get through it believe it or not.
This seemed to be a very personal story of my life. It still is all these years later.

I’m 46, my husband is 47, we’ve been together since I was 14, he was and still is majorly into Pink Floyd, yes he smoked the stuff, I never did so didn’t listen to this music. I’m just recovering from a hysterectomy and I can tell you this wonderful music is easing my recovery, it’s wonderful

"The child has grown, the dream is gone". Every time I hear those lyrics my chest tightens and tears run down my cheeks. Gilmore's guitar solos are so emotional they transport me back to the origins of the most extreme emotions in my childhood. I could tell from your face they were very powerful for you too. 1979...My brother in law invited me over to hear "The Wall" just released, my sister was working.I can see us clear as day sitting in the living room with a few beers (and some other stuff) listening to the magnificent Comfortably numb! We just sat there staring into space..there were no words to indicate we had just hear something timeless! Flash forward to March of this year.....My brother in law ...passed from cancer ....I always think of him when I hear this song! RIP Steve ...and thanks for taking good care of my sister all these years! We'll throw on some PF when I see you next !!!

One thing that makes Comfortably Numb so powerful is that it contrasts extremely sad sections with the extremely happy chorus sections. And then outros into aggressive blues. It forces you to feel all emotions in one song.
My new wife bought this album for me because I was so exciting about Pink Floyd. I was grateful and listened to it repeatedly for two weeks. But, it had a strange affect on me. It captures the sense of isolation, sadness, and hopelessness so well, that I became depressed. I had to stop listening to it for a period.
The album follows the rock star, Pink's, descent into a mental breakdown. I could relate to all the hardships of my teen years: rejection, bullying, fights that sent me to the emergency room. It was all there in the album: being alone. I think that is what makes the album so amazing: it means something unique to everyone who hears it, but it is always something about struggle and isolation. Truly great art touches something inside you, something uniquely you.

We think back on the dream of our childhood and the promise of our lives and sometimes feel unfulfilled and disappointed in ourselves. The absolutely explosive guitar solos are the struggle against that darkness, refusing to go meekly. Roger Waters and David Gilmour were speaking for a lot of us.
and the way the verses are like "who gives a shit about your trauma, you need to start moving" only for the scattered thoughts of the chorus to imply "how? how am I supposed to move? just because you told me to? I don't even know what I'm trying to deal with here."
Remember reading where someone posted that every guitar should get a David Gilmour for Christmas. Love that line! Probably the highest praise one could give any musician.

Watching a person just listening to a song on CZcams would be quite boring. However watching a beautiful person experience awesome music and feeling it completely, is a truly rewarding moment. Having watched since her beginning in this journey of learning new music has made the crazy and depressing times I've (and many of us) been forced to go thru in the last year somewhat bearable. I was introduced to Pink Floyd around 1984, In the living room of a good friend. For me, My friend passed away recently and this took me back to that day. Imagining what it was like for him to watch me hear Pink Floyd for the first time.

I am much, more older than you, and remember when we'd listen to this back in the 70s. We basically imagined a star (singer or musician...but a big star) in his/her dressing room just before a concert is to begin. He/She has probably overdosed on something, and there is a frantic effort to not only revive him/her...but get them ready to go on stage. Listening to some songs from that era...sans the context of the times...it's often difficult to appreciate what was intended for the listener.
That's how it was in the movie.
I'm 62 now and I have lived loved to PF since I was 14 its great to see younger people appreciate the brilliance of this music.

Washing my car and listening to Floyd when my elderly (recently widowed) mom came out to join me. The look on her face was priceless. At the end of a song she said "I love The Blues, Who is this?" "Pink Floyd." I replied. I then put my 6 disk player on Random Play and she sat (sometimes softly swaying) listening for an hour. BTW... Morenikeji Taiwo, You are very beautiful.
the album "the wall" is a whole storyline. It is a kid growing up who becomes a musician. The musician becomes a drug addict and detached from his audience. Hence, he is "comfortably numb". The line "can you hear me" shows he is "out of it" and he gets an injection ("just another pinprick") in order to keep going ("can you stand up / that will get you through the show"). In order the understand the lyrics, you need to place it in the context of the whole album. The song "Mother" shows how he grew up with the fears of his mother instilled in him ("mother put all of her fears into you"). The album starts with an airplane coming down (representing his father being killed and growing up with a single mother) and the baby crying representing his birth. The whole album is the life story of Roger Waters (basist and song writer).

70s and 80s was a great time growing up to this music...She gives me hope in the younger generation
All Pink Floyd albums tell a story, The wall is a story of growing up in the aftermath of WW2, an overprotective mother who lost a husband clinging to her child, that childs experience in the education system of the day, their rise to fame, falling into drug use, mental health issues and final escape from that past...
If you like this song you should listen to their song "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" from their 1975 album Wish you were here, a song written in honour of Syd Barrett, a founding member of the band who sadly fell into heavy drug use and serious mental health issues resulting in him being removed from the band, the guilt the band felt resulted in them immortalizing him in their their tribute to him, it's truly heartbraking when you know the story behind it....
Especially as he showed up at the studio during the recording of the song about him....

"One day during recording, Barrett (now heavyset, with a completely shaved head and eyebrows) wandered into the studio (although Mason has since stated that he is not entirely certain whether "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" was the particular work being recorded when Barrett was there). Because of his drastically changed appearance, the band did not recognize him for some time. When they eventually realised that the withdrawn man in the corner was Barrett, Roger Waters became so distressed about Barrett's appearance that he was reduced to tears. Someone asked to play the suite again for Barrett and he said a second playback was not needed when they had just heard it. When asked what he thought of the song, Barrett said it sounded a "bit old". He subsequently slipped away during celebrations for Gilmour's wedding to Ginger Hasenbein, which took place later that day. Gilmour confirmed this story, although he could not recall which composition they were working on when Barrett showed up.

"Roger was there, and he was sitting at the desk, and I came in and I saw this guy sitting behind him - huge, bald, fat guy. I thought, "He looks a bit... strange..." Anyway, so I sat down with Roger at the desk and we worked for about ten minutes, and this guy kept on getting up and brushing his teeth and then sitting - doing really weird things, but keeping quiet. And I said to Roger, "Who is he?" and Roger said "I don't know." And I said "Well, I assumed he was a friend of yours," and he said "No, I don't know who he is." Anyway, it took me a long time, and then suddenly I realised it was Syd, after maybe 45 minutes. He came in as we were doing the vocals for "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", which was basically about Syd. He just, for some incredible reason picked the very day that we were doing a song which was about him. And we hadn't seen him, I don't think, for two years before. That's what's so incredibly... weird about this guy. And a bit disturbing, as well, I mean, particularly when you see a guy, that you don't, you couldn't recognize him. And then, for him to pick the very day we want to start putting vocals on, which is a song about him. Very strange."

This song is almost 50 years old, and yet it seems more relevant than ever in these trying times! David Gilmore is one of the most emotionally expressive guitarists in Rock music. His guitar strings literally set your heartstrings vibrating in sympathetic modulation. This is a song about isolation and addiction, especially as experienced by a burned out artist. This is yet another reference to their founder, Syd Barrett, who suffered a total mental collapse early in their career.
This is what was called album rock. This is an excellent song by itself for sure. But the entire album comes together. You have to turn off the lights lay down and enjoy from start to end

Ahhhh... The unmistakable "Pink Floyd Look" flowed across your stunning face! You will NEVER be the same, this is music to set your soul free to soar, intertwined in it's ethereal waves. Sincerely, this music is life changing for all of us! I saw their 2nd to last tour in Seattle. Then their final tour up in Vancouver BC. As good as the former was, that final was truly epic, mythic even in scope. Do yourself a favor and rent the Pulse DVD, you'll be glad you did! Pink Floyd is simply the greatest band ever and Dark Side of the Moon is a masterpiece. I've been fortunate enough to have seen them live three times. I also saw Roger solo three times and Dave solo four times! I'll never forget being 10th row at the LA sports arena and Dave was standing on top of "The Wall" playing the Comfortably numb solo!!
To listen to Pink Floyd properly I recommend a spare hour lying on the settee with headphones and playing the whole album (The Wall) on a quiet afternoon. Picking individual tracks loses some of the intended experience.

The song is an almost Shakespearean/Nietzschean celebration of the tragic view of life. Sad and yet life affirming. The look on your face said it all. There are live versions that you will enjoy.

Um...no. it may make one feel that way because it is composed so well, however there is no "deep meaning" to this tune...it is a lyrically straightforward retelling of an incident Roger had during a gig in Philadelphia around 1977.
Some of the best guitar ever from these guys.

This was a song that Pink Floyd wrote with the understanding that a member of the band was on a bad drug trip in the dressing room before a show. His bandmates get "medicine" of some sort to revive him so he can play in the show. His vision and hearing are blurred, he is in a very surreal place as he goes on stage. The guitar and instrumental occur to give emotion to his surreal state. Don't take the emotions to heart or seriously, the whole song is a ode to the drug life of the 1960's. We live in a different world now.
On your own watch the Pulse live version of this. The light show is gorgeous and the guitar solo is much longer. You’ll love it. 👍❤️

You're on a roll, Mo!... I know you're going to get fans of bands and performers to plead that you do the live version (concert footage) of songs, but from a purely musical standpoint, the studio recording is nearly 100% of the time the best version of a song from any band or performer. If you want to react to VIDEOS of bands and performers, then live (concert footage) is the way to go. If you want to react to MUSIC from bands and performers, then the studio recording is the way to go.
I agree! No discredit to the performances or musicians themselves, but it's a unfortunate truth that for most of these iconic shows, the quality of the recordings and mixing are of no comparison to studio tracks.
The Pulse concert show by Floyd is well worth watching any song from. Quite professional.
