I've been an Uber driver over the last 8 yrs except during COVID. I agree w your comment. Most drivers don't know what Net Income is. When I tell riders I only 'net' $3-4/hr, they are shocked. The exception to that are ex-Uber or ex-Lyft drivers. You are a business and you need to account for all costs for that businees :
laptop, phone, maintenance ( brakes, tires, washes, anything Jiffy Lube suggests, etc.), insurance (rates go up from all those extra miles), bottled water and more. Only after that, you can derive 'profit'. The loss of equity in your car's value pays you a lot more than Uber does. Technically, you are PAYING YOURSELF !!

@@apexakThat happened to me in one week. Seemed like every rider I got was on the rag and very, very MOODY!!
And those riders thought they were entitled to talk to me like I'm shit beneath their shoes. My rating went from 4.95 to 4.83 very quickly, and I got all kinds of reports that riders didn't appreciate my conversation or that I was NOT wearing a mask, as Uber was mandating drivers to do, including sharing a link to the CDC in the scolding, yet Uber support techs would not even read the info on the CDC website, for themselves. If they had, and also had real brains, they would not have threatened or harassed one single driver, or rider, with such a scare tactic. The CDC, in the link sent to drivers, specifically stated that masks do not work. It was all a scam. They just used it and worded the mandate to create more FEAR with all the drivers and riders, for profit.
I reminded every single rider that masks restricted oxygen to their brain, and that trees need humans' carbon dioxide expelled when they talk so the trees can keep producing oxygen for our planet. Children in first grade understand how trees grow. The masks created a lot of fear in people and made their identities even more hard to confirm. Drivers have more faith and courage than any of these CEOS and attorneys that write contracts so ambiguous that new drivers really have no idea how to be an independent contractor on their apps. They have to break the contract and advise their riders how ripped off they are being. But some still don't get it. They'll figure it out when the algorithm starts sending them low paying fares. It's programmed to get the drivers to settle for less, and less, and less, until the algorithm wins the game, which is created by the support techs, in conjunction with the CEOS and directors, who care nothing about their own neighbors.
All the tattle-telling in the app, based on all the options to either take a ride or cancel a rider or report either the rider or driver's behavior is creating animosity in communities where once everyone knew everyone, and people actually helped one another and hard problems got solved quickly and easily when the community came together and figured out how much deception had been placed upon them.
Can't wait to read Uberland! It just came in the mail today! SCOTUS might need to read that book, as well, prior to making their decision in the MOODY CASE! I love a play on words! 😂
How many other people know EXACTLY what I'm talking about? 🤔

Even as a new driver I never chased a surge.
My rule for accepting rides is no more than a 10 minute drive for a pick up.
As far as talking to passengers, I work in a medium sized market where I see a lot of the same people pretty often I’m 1 of maybe 6 other Uber drivers in my area most people are very chatty with me without me having to initiate it. I guess I’m one of the lucky ones.

i tested how long the surge lasts and its about 6-7 minutes before it refreshes so i figure its about 2-3 miles if your on the highway if its really good to chase. take the 10 minutes down to 7 unless its above a x ride like xl or comfort that pays well. i allow people to chat with me unless they dont at all or they dont after i talk once and they dont bite. but if you dont talk to people that want to talk to you you wont get as much tips same with people that dont want to talk. 9.4 12k rides

I have been an Uber driver for 5 1/2 years now, nearly 6700 rides, 2300 on lyft (lyft is such a damn rip off, I quit) I am a Diamond driver, 95% of my riders tip me. I always ask how are they doing and wish them a Great Evening. If they start to talk after I ask how they are doing then it continues on. If they are quiet I am also. Some of them are going home from work and have been dealing with people for 8 hours, they want some decompression time and quiet.. I allow that. I learned about "over talking" and still may do this on occasion, I catch myself tho. Chasing surge, after all these years and rides I still do it. hahaha.. and sometimes I get it, sometimes I dont. the area may surge again, so if it pops, then I hang out for a bit to see if it will come back..

I send the text, "Ive arrived" and when it gets close to cancelation I text a question mark.. I keep my doors locked until I verify the name AND attitude. Most of my riders appreciate that I do that. I ask them how they are doing. If they dont talk much after that, I keep quiet and allow them their peace. I always wish them a good afternoon or evening. I am a very educated person, worldly. So I can discuss a wide variety of topics. I also find that if I can get people to laugh, it lightens their mood. I am basically a happy person.. and that will rub off onto them. I am friendly and kind. I do all I can to provide them with a safe ride. If I make a mistake like bumping into a curb, I apologize. If someone needs extra time to get out of the car, I tell them no rush, take your time. If someone has a low score I bring their awareness to it. Some riders dont even know they have a score and are shocked to find out theirs is low. I tell them I am going to give them 5 stars and make suggestions on how they can improve. Like being there waiting for the driver, not trying to put more people in the car than is allowed legally.. I love animals, so pets are welcome! .I dont hand out water bottles or candy. I cant afford it and I dont want spills in the car. I am personable and interested in being the best I can. • @jasonswingle1880
      @jasonswingle1880 Před 2 měsíci

@@MM-ng5wc there's a catch 22 here. You won't make 100 bucks in an 8 hr time frame if you take every single shit run they'll throw at you. Chasing gold will only wear you and your car out. It's not worth it to me. They'll offer you a run that picks up 10 miles aways just to backtrack you past where you started and then they won't give you a Nicole for those deadhead miles and if you're lucky you'll get paid what the loaded miles are. So you tell me if it's worth it or not to chase gold. And where I'm from, you have to take time into consideration for every trip. Backup and traffic lights will eat your time. I'll read some of the times off of my screens hits for you. Pays 12.71 pickup is 20 minutes away, 11.6 miles. 20 trip, 9.i miles. Another example with a big assed stack that I refused. $10.18 8 mins with 4.2 mile deadhead, 24mins 12.9 mile trip. I've given you 2 examples. Tell me how much you made per hr if you didn't get anything else? Was it worth it to you? And then if you have to run back to a better area if one of those runs takes you out to bfe, then that's more of a loss. So take every little dick run including the 3 and 5 dollar bullshit and ask yourself if it's worth it. There's my 2 cents. Their lowering the rates. And if you say no and hold out and then they have to add a little more for the same run. And if you have to backtrack, they can shove that one in their asses. I understand that there's someone waiting on a ride. Well if they made it worth your while in the first place then they'd have a ride. If you want me to do it for nothing, then I'm going home. That's what I do.

Always read the passenger. Some passengers like to talk, some don't. Respect that. Don't ignore them, always be polite and helpful, focus on driving correctly. I've had passengers complain that some drivers don't say a word to them once they get in the car, no matter how much the passenger tries to engage in conversation. Remember that part of your job is customer service. Never argue with the customer, regardless of how you personally feel about whatever it may be you two are talking about.

Mistake #1 not understanding how much of a liability you create for yourself while driving for Uber. Even with Rideshare insurance in most instances once you are on the way to a passenger or completing a ride you will have to use Ubers insurance and as such pay the $2500 deductible to fix your ride. And when people say, “just don’t cause an accident” they are not understanding that if someone does a hit and run you will be liable for that deductible. All this doesn’t include the fact that your insurance is about to skyrocket. And for those that drive without letting the insurance know good luck with that.

In many countries Uber does show all information about the ride in the ping including the exact pick up address , drop down address , the milage and ETA as well how much money the driver will be paid. IN Western Australia it only shows how far in kms and minutes the rider is . When you move to gold tier having 85 or Higher % AR , 3 or less % CR and 400 points ( back in days it was 1000) you will see as well where is the rider ( North , North West ) the duration of the trip ( so you need to calculate on spot whether there is traffic or not ) to estimate roughly how much you will be paid , and the direction from the pick up point ( south west ) . It's very hard to cherry pick when you have 30 secs to keep an eye on road and do your calculations. If you drops your CR or AR bellow level mentioned above , then again you won't see anything other then John is 5 minutes away. And how on heck i should know how far John is travelling, unless its 35 km and plus ...

Consequently i take every ride (unless pick-up is much longer than ride) - here we have Didi and Uber, I am platform agnostic - whoever has a customer for me at any given time, that's who im driving for. I won't chase surge, but I won't wait around and refuse rides hoping for a big fish. Similarly i dont do airport pick-ups. The Uber priority rebook system is broken and waiting in the pig pen is just wasted time.
I do drive an EV, so my marginal costs are about 1.5c/km so im more flexible on how far ill drive for a pick-up 😊
