The local gentleman is Jerry Snyder from Scott City, retired now from teaching, has researched the history of Battle Canyon extensively, and was instrumental in securing the marker at the site.
“Cheyenne Autumn,”by author Marie Sandoz (mentioned in the video) is a great resource on the Cheyenne exodus. The US troops in Kansas gave up this fight quickly, allowing the Cheyenne to proceed on their journey. The video alludes to the subsequent depredations near Oberlin, but omits any mention of another incident from 1875, where a group of Cheyennes were basically massacred during a siege on Sappa Creek, also near Oberlin. Sandoz writes that the incident inspired the brutal retaliation by a smaller group of the Cheyenne refugees who killed the settlers near Oberlin in 1878. Eventually a trial was held after the Cheyenne had been subdued, but the defendants were acquitted from lack of evidence. Kansas was caught in the middle of a bad situation. The video provides a nice overview of one part of this tragic series of events.
I visited this site two weeks ago. Being from out east. The only sound was the "breeze". That breeze at one point started to push me down. Local said not Kansas spring wihds No cars, trucks, planes.

Great job on the veido but I still can't understand why a group of people in washington gets to decide were people live the government say that they own the land how do they own the land I'm glad we have park's so big companys can't distroy the land but why does the government say it belongs to them they are killing off the mustang horses I'm a half breed my self I think they call it mix blood now I've said enough I guess I think you done a good job on your veido
