- In the land of the Rising Sun, love and relationships are in danger. A quarter of all Japanese aged 30 to 40 are virgins and 50% of the population admits to not having sex regularly. Unsurprisingly, this has led to birth rates plummeting. 30% of Japan’s population could disappear by 2060. But what are the reasons for this detachment from the world of love and sex? Tough jobs, stress, money problems… not exactly an ideal environment for finding love.
The country has developed a unique industry from this phenomenon, with the trend of ‘solo weddings’ emerging: young women in wedding dresses pose in front of the camera for their big day… except, they’re not actually marrying anyone. Paradoxically, Japan is also one of the largest producers of porn movies in the world, with many men seeming to prefer manga heroines to women their age. As Japanese men and women slowly lose the skill of connecting, courses are flourishing teaching the art of seduction.
This documentary was first released in 2016.

I lived in Japan for 10 years, I was married to a Japanese man and have 2 half Japanese kids.
The main reason people aren’t getting married is because Japanese companies aren’t providing lifetime employment like they used to. They pay low wages. A single person struggles to survive on a university graduate office workers wage.
When you get married you have kids and when you have kids the wife doesn’t work. You have to rely on the men’s income.. but today, the men’s income isn’t enough to support a family.

the problem you mention is just one of many. It's a combination of factors that lead to a cyclical downward spiral. Bad economy leads to low pay wages leads to less spending, less marriages, less children, which leads to a worse economy and the cycle repeats.
Japan is a rich country, but you say they cannot afford a family. Third world countries with most of population in poverty are breeding like rabbits.
Also, don't forget that many governments actually desire a decline in population growth. Secretly they consider this a "necessary evil" in order to allow for another round of "population growth" which then starts a new cycle of prosperity. This is why after e.g. a war the governments pay huge "child benefits" to parents in order to get the population replenished. However, when the society is considered large enough or too large, the child benefits are kept unchanged, so that they are eaten by inflation. Sometimes the child benefits are even reduced blatantly.
Many people pretend governments would never reduce their own population size, even though this would be irrational for them to NOT do. As governments need to lay the ground work for a prosperous society, a few years of hardship are no problem for them - as they are always payed handsomely while the rest of the population goes through the recessions.
I guess they would have to leave the kid with the grandparents.
Here in Quebec, a lot of people leave them at daycare and it is government subsidized. It costs the parent 7$/day.

I would say another problem is the sexual revolution of the 60s. I think that creates unstable relationships. Even when a couple gets married, it doesn’t last long. 50% end up in a divorce in 8 y.
It looks like Japan doesn’t have that problem but they don’t date much. Maybe people copy each other. If your friends sleep around, you tend to do the same. When your friends don’t date, you don’t date?

My ex sister inlaw was Japanese, her brother got married to a very modern girl in Japan, but here's the kicker- she (the brothers fiance) ONLY wanted an "American wedding" so her family went full-out with a giant fancy dress, expensive reception, etc....only for that girl to divorce him 3 MONTHS LATER!!! She only wanted the wedding. Sad.

@@eatplastic9133If you hyperfixate on just the wedding, nobody will be able to make you happy. You have to take time and actually be aware of who you choose as your partner. Most behaviours and signs can be picked up if you stay alert. Things like big wedding and constant honeymoon phase don’t strengthen a marriage. Love, companionship and comprimise is what seperates lifelong marriages from divorce.
Don’t bother marrying if you can have those three things, you’ll just end divorcing, losing time and money.
There was a study that said the more expensive the wedding the more likely it is for the mariage to fail. Anway, if he hit her or cheated on her then she was right to divorce him.

It's not that. It's the Post-Industrial world that Western economies are currently based on. Both men and women go to school, work, and build wealth before getting married. Most couples in the U.S. don't get married until their mid-to-late 30s. Germany is currently at a -1% population growth. It has nothing to do with "human contact."
Absolutely! Western social trends are also resulting in the loss of meaningful relationships in the west. Men aren't having kids in the west like in many countries around the world. and it's a worrying trend that needs to be adressed.

In the global south it's really different and I feel like it has to do with many different aspects, in my country having a child is hard because of the economical situation

The goal is to have plenty of stuff, go out, go on long vacations, which means fewer kids.
Nobody wants to live in a single room with 20 kids anymore.

@@Becky_Cal Starting? People have been opting out of relationships and dating for years and years and decades already in the west. We're already well past the point of no return. Only reason mainstream still haven't caught on all these years, is that these people, new and older generations have become so accustomed to loneliness and suffering in silence and solitude with no one to reach out to. They're invisible, like ghosts and they're everywhere. Only now that the problem has become so severe that it affects 40 (soon to be 50 and 60)% of the population, are we starting to talk about it, in half whispers only.

It’s honestly better that way. Humanity’s greed and power of money have done well in destroying every inch of our lives and we should collectively reap what we’ve sowed. Tragic, yes, but better than anything else that people have done.
This makes the case in support of the fact that the wedding day glamour has never been about the marriage. It's a concept sold by wedding industry and appeals to women. It's not about the husband or commitment to marriage.

Sensationalism with a poor explanation of the problem.
Higher aging population, lower available younger dating pools, long work hours and public unwillingness to socialize and date/marry outside of familiar circles (schoolmates, co-workers, colleagues) is why relationships are in decline in Japanese CITIES. Take a bunch of strangers from across the country and dump them into four metropolitan cities by themselves and tell them to find a wife while studying and working 12 hours a day... now you see the real problem. Same thing that afflicts Korea.
And too much suppression of masculinity by extreme punishments for masculine behavior. Men have too much to lose by approaching women while women have 0 accountability for misbehavior. There's even documented abused men by japanese fem coworkers and if revealed, the victims get punished lol

@burgertim7878 the drinks are often mandatory in their culture as well. I have no problem telling someone I don't want to get drinks in the us, but in Japan it that can get you fired

Ofc I understand it. The children have become the NO.1 priority. If the couple agrees to that its fine I guess. But as a man I would adress this issue and work on it. There are ways of improving quality-time and sex-life as a couple. Make some sport together, consume healthier food, boost your testosterone with medication. If all that aint enough, there are pills to take. On the other hand if both are fine with that, I guess thats also okay. If you dont feel your lacking something, why work to achieve it?
I’m a mixed Japanese, but I’m not from Japan or anything, however… the government is mostly to blame for the decrease in marriages and population. They need to stop overworking their people… or pay them more. Working people barely get holidays or days off in Japan.
Actually couples that turn into parents and stopping having sex is not a thing only in Japan, it's all around the world. What happens is that most people turn the blind eye to this situation cause it's avoiding reality is easier.

Very true, my experience is that most woman if not all give up on sex after few children, after this life just becomes " go and buy this and that, bring grocery, wash cloths" many married couples dont even have sex months, and that all over the world.

Hentai doesn't mean what you think it does, depending on context can mean strange or pervert. Erotic manga in Japan is actually called ero manga "ero" being short for "erotic". And porn is often referred to as "AV" which is short for "adult video", because yes Japan does use some English words.
Several factors at play here:
1) Japanese women have only just recently (about 2-3 decades ago) joined the labor force. With their newfound array of possibilities, many are postponing marriages or skipping it altogether.
2) As mentioned by many, long work hours since WWII, but thats not the only thing. High housing and cost of living and low wages are also at play here.
3) The party in control of the government is a conservative party, that looks down on immigration, and has kept itself in power because it focuses on expanding social services programs for the elderly, that being the largest population group. So the aging population keeps them in power by virtue of being the majority, but the high cost associated with these program expansions increases the cost for everyone else. Most young Japanese don't vote.
4) Married couples simply cannot afford having kids. They both have to work full time jobs, sometimes more than one job to support themselves. Young people don't have as much interest in marriage as they used to, same as everywhere else in the world.
Very little to do with shut-ins and "virgins". They exist (everywhere, not just Japan) but they are not the root of the problem.
if japan ever opens their borders to uncontrolled immigration, they're doomed.
Importing a bunch of free / cheap labor isn't and never has fixed anything.
Opening the flood gates to imagination is only going to hurt the native people of what ever land.

Marriage doesn't guarantee happiness. Many married people are extremely unhappy. I came across one study that showed that people who are generally cheerful and happy, are also happy in marriage or single. People who are generally negative and prone to saddness, are more likely unhappy in a marriage.

One very big problem for families is there are almost no daycares. Even in a big metropole like Tokyo I have been to nearly all places and the programs seem very limited in comparison to schools which have a comprehensive syllabus and good staff... I found many unqualified people looking after small kids in daycares, meanwhile the prices and waiting lists are unbelievable absurd. There seems to be a great disconnect between early child education or activities and school content. To be honest all the facilities felt like little prisons and the kids were mostly looked down upon, almost like orphans. I know it's much more common for a parent to stay home at least until 1-2. grade.but still I was shocked to see that the most expensive facilities were not one bit better staff and content wise. This seems to me like the most obvious fix for the government to tackle. Families get very little support and being forced to quit careers is not a great incentive.
Sex is a minor aspect of a deep and committed relationship between two individuals. Sex has become seen as essential to the healthy perpetuation of the relationship, though there are far more critical aspects that get overlooked, such as communication, listening, assisting one another in understanding one’s place in a complicated world. The sex industry has trivialised sex into a commodity, something to earn a living from. There is tremendous pressure to be in a relationship, and have sex…. All this is not to say that sex isn’t a natural human urge to perform.
I blame MTV, and then the social media companies, mainstream media, music labels, and the general populace that watches trash like the kardashians, in Japan the general populace that buys into lolicon anime.

I agree. In the West, sex is presented as some sort of cool and naughty adult pleasure not so different to substances. It's a natural human urge, but with it being featured so heavily and shown as something that's simply hedonistic and not the intimacy it has, it's doing its role in a committed relationship as something cheaper. Just anecdotally, it seems a couple that's madly in love with each other have it a lot more of it than someone who has one night stands or is known to be promiscuous.

I see the red pill movement and their complaints about western women. It's a shyer culture there, but the distance between the sexes is far vaster. Perhaps the grass isn't greener on the other side after all. I think many of the passport bros that think Japan is much better might be in for a rude shock.

Petting is considered an affectionate sort of touching between couples in the culture. It's interesting how we differ between cultires just like how we find uncles and aunties kissing your cheeks weird in Europe.

In the Phillipines, you can't get unmarried by law, which I think is actually bad, but one good side effect is that when a woman marries she is ready to devote 1000% towards it, and would never dream or even culturally have the thought of future alimony or benefiting from divorce. So, a marriage is seen as incredibly sacred, and that's really how I think marriage should be.

With how closed Japanese society is towards foreigners and as this documentary points out there is a growing gulf between people coming together let alone finding intimacy I wonder if them opening up and potentially finding mates outside of their culture or race would help bridge the gap and potentially give people other options than just what is available inside Japan. Interfaith, intercultural marriages, dating and just being friends with others from different backgrounds could widen the possibilities.

I had no idea about the lost generation and difficulties young people are facing in society! I always thought that Japan was the perfect country and had no idea there was a darker side to it! After some decades studying and admiring Japanese culture, I'd now say they have so many problems as virtues. I also had a time considering it perfect and the best possible place to live, but only because I was so enamoured of their creative and daring arts. The average Japanese person is very unhappy as their lives are plagued by the constant pressure to erase their individuality and still succeed. People don't ask for help, they don't ask for favors, they don't communicate to a personal level, making friendships is hard, you're expected to impress everyone and make your family proud in being able to reproduce harmful expectations. They know about mental health concepts but there's few to no mental health services because people refuse to use them.

This is heartbreaking. I was with my woman for 32 years, happily married, three boys. I can’t imagine, living life like this. In my time, my girl and I used to double date with hook up our friends with each other. Most boys would match up with most girls. The boys had similar rights of passage that strengthens their character, and made them confident and attractive to women. Nobody knew how to pick up girls, and nobody had to learn, either. It just happened. Sure, every guy fantasize about being able to pick up hot chicks by snapping your fingers and sleeping with him that night, but our expectation was not outcome oriented. We had a great time together, we ran, played games, fought, had fun and round and round it went. My wife always came to me for sex and always climaxed. Then we all had our families and our children grew up in freedom.
Cancer took my wife last year and I learned about the dating disaster. We need to stop worrying, forget about politics and get our Japanese brethren and all our virgin bros laid.

Kamazawa did well. If he only knew how well… He hit it off with his girl, they had fun, and he boldly got her number. Then the best thing happened. He got rejected. Do you know why? Hold that thought. Imagine if he went on a date with this girl, held her hand, gave her a hug goodnight and topped it off with… “I love you”. Not holding eye contact he would be ghosted and never know what happened, that those 3 words are not just words, they can be kryptonite.
He will watch this video, see her cringe and learn keep his intentions ambiguous, a lesson that usually costs a lot more. Kamazawa is a stud. Now he just has to rinse and repeat,… and keep his intentions to himself so that when he does say those 3 words- they are more than words.

The reality is that even with two working parents the salaries are not enough for a child to be brought up properly in the west nowadays. The education housing and health care are astronomically expensive don’t mention the water and electricity bills and food. It’s a hunger games in which even the fittest won’t survive.
You can survive on 1 meal a day. Food is overwhelming the planet. Its more than ever before. You really dont need a nice flat to live in. You can get a camper-can or whatever. Issue is most people dont think about that stuff and blame others like society for their issues. In the west we have all possibilities most people on earth want. You dont even need a car. There is cheap transportation in most countries. You can even get help from the state if your unemployed and use your working-force to find jobs where you can earn money where you get paid directly like in dog-care, house-work and so on... . If you struggle to survive and your a healthy human being your just making up poor excuses for yourself.
Both of my grandfathers worked 2 jobs their entire lives to provide. Men don’t do that anymore. They expect their wife to work both inside and outside the home, and many married men with only one job go out dating after work leaving their wives to pull the second shift of work at home alone.

@@Ghost007-yu2jm I'm not sure if that's fixable. I think these are the natural results of religional decline, internet era and economical independence of women. Married couples had many obligations to stay married and tolerate eachother for a lifetime. Now the reasons are few.

I can't imagine paying big money to spend a day as a bride alone. They even offered those girls a man to take pictures and enhance the fantasy of a wedding day, and they were declining it. Seemed all about the the wedding dress, and some American glam experience.

I guess I'm more basic and only care about marrying someone I love, that will love me deeply and be faithful and loyal. That would be my ultimate goal in a wedding. What I wear is well behind that. But women really love to look their best too, and that's very important.

I know it’s very tempting , I’ve been married for 50 years and if I could do it all over again I would not even though I love my children and grand children to death! The stark reality is that when there are no more children entering the workforce and pay taxes there eventually won’t be an old age pension anymore. I wonder what the future holds for coming generations, would be interesting to see how this problem is handled!

it's not economic or social pressure. It's a governance balance challenge - how to make the population productive (incl. sexually), but also obedient and farmable. Japan is a very firmly structured, traditional society that has advanced in the "obedient and farmable" departments. These (un)fortunate people live in such advanced, safe but stagnant society which offers no meaningful existential challenges or social mobility - 2 natural baby-making boosters, in the absence of which you can only try more weird, unnatural solutions.

In the past the practice of arrange marriages also added to Japan’s population. Now with their modern society, Japan will hopefully embrace more childcare and financial benefits for the younger generation. In doing so I believe Japan will find a balance.
Yup. Years ago, I studied Japanese in uni (here in Europe) and one of the teachers was from Japan. She was 25 and very concerned that she wasn't married yet and that she had no boyfriend. She said "Well, I guess I have to let my parents arrange a marriage for me". We, students, gave each other a wtf-did-she-just-say look, but the teacher herself was dead serious. Luckily, she found a Japanese boyfriend, who had also moved here from Japan and I think, over time, she didn't feel so pressured to actually get married so quickly anymore. So it worked out well for her.

From what I am able to understand about Japanese culture, plastic dolls are more acceptable than non-Japanese as both sexual partners and spouses. Abstinence is also preferred over foreigners, no matter where they come from. I find it hard to believe but even Japanese who emigrated for a generation or two then went back are apparently no longer ok. Maybe cultures come and go, and that's ok?
So how come in places like the states Asian women frequently choose white men as partners? It's a real problem for Asian men.
That is the root of the problem. Even in other Asian cultures there is a continuation of that bloodline regardless of place of birth of their partner. While Japan is closed off and frown upon that for the most part.
Why then are foreign women prized as bar "hostesses?" And in the West, Asian women are marrying Non-Asian men at a rate that hinders Asian men's chances at getting a partner at all?

This is a real crisis, they need some serious help
The crisis is that 99% of everyone uses the internet at this point, and social interaction and meeting people in that way is a whole other ball game that most aren't adapted to.
It also raises problems of how groups of women get together and will 'cancel' a guy they don't like, often breakups will happen in a sort of cancel culture way now, I've seen this phenomenon like 50 times now online.
I've seen guys actually swear off of women because when they went through a breakup, that added element of online harassment and bullying drove them to depression, near suicide, and now they prefer to be completely alone.
Other guys, this one guy my friend knew, actually kept joining groups of girls online and kept getting cancelled by them over and over again.
By 'cancel', I mean, the group of girls start trying to dig up dirt on their past, and then posting that publicly online. When he goes into some other group, they go after that group too, because their goal is to try to permanently destroy his reputation. They'll even stalk him years afterwards sometimes. Usually the easiest way for a group of girls to go after a guy these days, is to try to tell everyone they know, including just the internet publicly the common 'He talked with a minor' lie, this is a common thread between many cancellations I've seen.
At that point, it then becomes a hazard to talk to ANY women at all, because even if a guy is to meet one offline, they'll still text each other, and texting itself becomes dangerous and becomes a recorded documentation of their conversations, which can be used against them later, as it works as evidence, 'evidence' that can often be misconstrued and taken out of context later.

This is what free country is all about, this is not allowed in some countries or people dare to do that due to the pressure from either family or society.
I think marriage is still there, it just getting pushed back later in life. Example people are buying house and settling down later in life compared to how life was 10, 20 + years ago. Factors such as financial stability, debt, cost of living, inflation does affect people ability to settle down.
Although I love my career it is not enough to hide away. I adore my husband and kiddos. I can’t imagine life like this. It’s different times

This is also the future in the West. I could've been japanese as far the documentary is concerned just until a few years ago. Took about 3 years of hard labor on myself to get to the point of being able to do anything dating related, and then another two years to find a girl. She also hadn't dated before. I was surprised at that as well. But I don't think the men would have been able to handle it if the women were using there hands in the interaction as part of the service. From what I gathered from video it seems that service is not meant to be sexualized. And given that hugging and holding hands are big steps in intimacy in the culture in general I can see how they wouldn't find it strange and find value in just being in the person's presence and talking and having whatever contact is allowed. Sex used to be one of the easiest available fun times people could have. Nowadays there are so many alternative ways to feel good (like playing games for example) and also the whole lack of physical interaction coupled with less time, higher prices etc, makes real relationships harder to start and maintain
