Weaning from pumping

  • When weaning from pumping, there are several ways you can slowly drop supply. The goal for any weaning is to leave milk behind in the breast. Milk that is left signals the breast to slow production. Weaning too fast for some can increase their risk of plugged ducts from too much milk sitting. Doing gentle breast gymnastics (moving the breast around, see my other videos) can help reduce milk sitting in any one spot. Using ice when weaning can also help reduce inflammation that can occur.
    Three different ways:
🔑Drop one pump session at a time. Alternate between dropping a morning and evening pump session. Try dropping one pump session every 3-7 days to allow time for your breasts to accommodate and shift your supply
🔑Gradually decrease the amount of time spent pumping for every pump session. Every other day, decrease pumping time by 2-3 minutes for every pump that you normally do. If you get most of your milk at the beginning of your pump session, pump to volume instead of time. So if you normally pump 2-3oz combined between both breasts, try to pump 1.5-2oz combined for a few days.
🔑Gradually increase the length of time between pumping sessions. Space out pump sessions by 30 minute increments every few days (go from 3 hours on Monday to 3.5 hours on Wednesday to 4 hours on Saturday, etc)
Struggling to make the drop yourself or need help figuring out a schedule that will work for you? Consider a private weaning consultation. This may be free for you if you have a qualifying PPO insurance plan. Link in bio to book.
