With their sixth full-length, "Über den Sternen", an allegorical German rendering of their band name meaning "Above the Stars", EMPYRIUM continue to draw from the magic and spirits of wild places, nature's beauty, and human relics of ages long past. "Über den Sternen" echoes this reconciliation of the old with the new on a musical level as well. The Franconian duo has brought the power of electric guitars and even those harsh vocals back, which marked their early works and stood strong upon the band's melodic black metal foundations. Yet EMPYRIUM also keep the dark folk style, which the Germans had progressively leaned towards with their later albums.
What used to appear as a fork in their musical development has now merged into one breath-taking sound. The combined force of mastermind, multi-instrumentalist, clean and extreme vocalist as well as producer Markus "Schwadorf" Stock and classical singer Thomas Helm, who lends his amazing voice also to the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, is painting a radiant sonic picture. It comes with the melancholic grounding of the sophomore album "Songs of Moors & Misty Fields” (1997), adds brushstrokes of the fairy-tale tempera colours of "Where at Night the Wood Grouse Plays" (1999), yet also uses hues from the selection on the DEAD CAN DANCE infused folk-palette that EMPYRIUM previously employed on "The Turn of the Tides" (2014). The crowning varnish is diligently crafted from rougher elements that reach all the way back to the Germans' legendary debut " A Wintersunset…" (1996). “We have found a new balance", Markus Stock emphasises. "We have finally reconciled our vintage sound from the early days with the acoustic expression of the later EMPYRIUM."
Staying true to the Romantic tradition, EMPYRIUM continue to take inspiration for their lyrical flights of fantasy from the local myths, ancient places, and natural wonders of the Rhön Mountains and their Lower Franconian homeland in the West of Germany. A circle is closing, and with EMPYRIUM's label Prophecy Productions, which were originally founded with the mission to release the band's debut album, celebrating their 25th anniversary in 2021, it happens in more than one way.

Some twenty years ago, time flies, a friend of mine introduced me to Empyrium and gothic/melancholic music in general. 'Ode To Melancholy' was the Empyrium's very first song that I listened to. The girl's long time gone, I really don't know what she's up to but I'm still in love with Empyrium after all these years. I remember when they came back and announced The Turn Of The Tides, I couldn't belive it, it was one of the happiest days of my life. Now I feel the same again... Mr Schwadorf, Mr Helm, thank you for your MUSIC.

How upset I was when Weiland later announced that Empyrium was not releasing an album. Der Weiher has been a hope, Into the Pantheon, new commentary and new album news, it is a great pleasure to see today while talking about concerts. You didn't look like bands that lost their line and soul. The dark atmosphere gave direction to my life. Great musician Schwadorf, you are amazing Thomas. Although the drums and transitions of the track are the continuation of the last album, the keyboards feel the A Wintersunset breeze. You are in a very different place, Empyrium. Thanks for producing the best quality music in the world and we are a very privileged generation for witnessing this history. Darkness and gloom are always with us.

Wie habe ich auf einen Song wie diesen gewartet...zerbrechlich, Melodien die packen, dazu die Vocals. Dazu gehört ein schöner Wein oder ein guter Malt Whisky und geschlossene Augen damit man die Gedanken wandern lassen kann. Danke Empyrium :)

Empyrium have been a part of my life since I first purchased WHERE AT NIGHT THE WOOD GROUSE PLAYS. I felt enticed by the title and I was spelled by the music. Music of the woods, a perfect match for one in love with the woods, as I am. It was 1999 and I have been a faithful fan ever since.

The whole album is simply a masterpiece. They really outdid themselves which was hard to begin with. I would love to see them live, especially in Colombia. Make a girl's dream come true guys. I love you.
Truly one of the best German bands! Have been listening to them since Songs of moors and misty fields and that album is still among my favorites. This song is very interesting, glad to see they still know how to enchant.
If there is anything amazing about 2019 and 2020, it was discovering this band. I'm in love with the music and cannot stop listening! I wished there was some way to see them in the USA!

Wie man sieht, weiss ich nicht, was ich sagen soll! Es ist ein wundervolles Stück geworden. Der Aufbau, der Text - alles ist stimmig und passt perfekt zusammen!
Wenn deine Lieblingsband einen neues Song verlffentlicht, dann geht man ja mit einer gewissen Erwartung heran und Empyrium hat noch nie enttäuscht! Dadurch, dass sich die Beiden Zeit nehmen, merkt man wie ausgereift jedes einzelne Stück ist! Es klingt wirklich wie eine perfekte Symbiose aus früher ubd jetzt!
Ich ziehe meinen Hut wie gewohnt vor dieser mehr als genialen Truppe und hoffe, dass sie noch ganz viele Veröffentlichungen heraus bringen werden! Empyrium ist einfach mehr als nur Musik - Sie sind einfsch der Soundtrack für 2 komplette Jahreszeiten. Jedes Jahr, wenn es Herbst und Winter wird läuft diese Band rauf und runter, weil es einfach passt!

I don't know why I am drawn to all things German but I am adding these to my list as of now. My husband is German, fave band is Rammstein and I used to be a big fan of Schelmisch who are early no more.
