  • 01- Make sure the area around the centre of the wheel is clean and no particles are present.
02 - Line up the two plastic feet with the two notches on the wheel.
03 - Push the Speed Sensor into position.
04 - Keep pressure on the Speed Sensor to keep it in position and slide the wheel back into the forks. The top of the Speed Sensor has to sit into a notch on the inside of the left hand fork to keep it in position. So there is only one way it can be installed. Be careful using front paddock stands here as it can hit off the sensor and damage the cable.
05 - Grease the axle, slide it back through the wheel, threading the opposite end and loosely tighten.
06 - Fit back on both brake callipers and tighten up remaining nuts.
07 - Finally tighten up the axle and tighten the 'pinch bolt' allen screw.
08 - Re-route the Speed Sensor cable using the existing cable clips from the old sensor and follow the route back up to the connection box under the fuel tank.
09 - Unscrew the 8mm nut on the fuel tank and lift up the tank.
10 - Open the lid on the black connection box and plug the new sensor into the 3 pin connector block.
Excuse my poor bolts on the front break discs, the previous owner could do with a good box in the jaw!
Filmed on my phone with one hand so footage isn't the best but it should be enough to get the job done.
The Speedometer on my my Fazer 600 stopped working a few weeks back. The needle wasn't moving at all, the Odometer reading was showing but the distance of the journey wasn't increasing. After investigating online it seems to be a common enough problem with these bikes. The bike is also 20 years old and probably the first time the sensor has needed changing so that's nothing to give out about. I was heading off on a week long trip and the speedo packed it in about 60 miles into the trip and I wasn't turning around and going home.
TIP: If this happens to your Fazer 600, stop somewhere safely and take the front wheel off as soon as possible. Take out the Rotor Sensor and replace the wheel with the Speed Sensor back in place as it is probably still perfect and continue your journey.
The common problem is with the Rotor Sensor. There is a magnetic collar mounted on a plastic base which has two plastic feet. These two feet sit into two notches in the wheel to hold the Rotor Sensor in place while the Speed Sensor counts the revolutions. I kept riding for the week and the magnetic collar melted into the Speed Sensor and then the Speed Sensor was now unusable. Rotor Sensor is only €30 but the Speed Sensor is €140 The Speed Sensor comes complete with the Rotor Sensor which I did not know and therefor cost myself an extra €30. I ordered genuine Yamaha parts from Fowlers UK and because it was coming to Ireland I had to pay an extra €42 customs charges. All in it cost €240 which is an expensive fix but at least it is working again, the parts are new and genuine Yamaha parts.
    Total cost €240
What it should have cost if I took the wheel off earlier.
    Rotor Sensor €30
    Delivery. €18.80
    Customs. €20 appx
    Total €68.80
    Everyday's a School Day.

Thank you. I need to change my front tyre shortly and I'm contemplating on taking the wheel off myself and bringing ir to the garage to get fitted so I can replace the wheel myself. I don't trust the garage even though they do it day in day out. One wrong mistake and the sensor is broken and a new one is costly. Glad you got yours sorted.

@@alxfeathers2287 I sourced my genuine Yamaha parts in ie.fowlersparts.co.uk/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwte-vBhBFEiwAQSv_xabh7MuX-sTvQL6Xi_hXrW8Bxf7h3cidpl20J3ervi-JDgoXo8wWlxoCHFwQAvD_BwE
I am in Ireland so I got caught for customs on them but it was worth it for the genuine parts. There are several different speedometers on Yamaha bikes, the one on my bike is different to the one on the Fazer 1000cc. Check for the part number is the best bet and source the new part then.

Just follow the same route as the old one. Up through the fairings/forks and you can cable tie it to some of the other cables already going that route.
