- In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by my new friend Phillip Campbell, a Catholic convert from charismatic, evangelical Christianity, to talk about his truly remarkable faith journey.
Raised nominally Catholic Phillip never went to Mass or received any of the sacraments but found Jesus through the evangelization of some close friends and their incredible examples of faith. After spending time in a number of charismatic communities - and a number of impactful religious experiences - Phillip shares what finally drew him into the fullness of the Catholic faith and why the sum total of his experiences in Christianity serve as a kind of trajectory toward Catholicism.
He has a great perspective on it all, and some incredibly wild experiences along the way!
There's so much in this story.

I'm a Pentecostal revert, I still get emotional in mass. I still watch the priest do the prayers of consecration, and say to myself there he is, there's Jesus!
I'm a cradle Catholic from Central Europe but I experienced a rather dramatic conversion at 17yrs old and St. Francis of Assisi was the saint that immediately found me and accompanied me. I literally found a medal with him and St. Anthony of Padua on the sidewalk and since then they got me. They have an incredible power about them. Especially for a 17yr a bit lost girl who loved the Beatles and the most and was attracted to the hippie side of them 😂 (back in 2001)
As a convert myself 52 yers ago, church fathers, magesteriial documents, life of the saints, family friends, the humility of most Catholics, awareness of eternity, etc. thanks for your pod casts, your gentle, generous and sincere approach, Doug
Thanks; Great testimony! My path went from Jewish atheism thru messianic evangelicalism to Catholisism. We Catholics have much to glean from charismatic evangelicals 😊🙏
Catholics have *absolutely nothing* to learn from Protestants. My goodness!! There is so much confusion. They don't have The Mass....they do not worship The One True God. They do not obey God. They do not give God the humility He is asking for. So no, Catholics do not have anything whatsoever to learn from Protestants! Stop, please. This confusion has to end. Like, right now.....
Yes, in a guarded fashion ... Research the speaking in tongues thing. The ONLY valid situation is where the one speaking in tongues understands what he is saying ... it is NOT babbling with nonsense syllables or like a baby gurgling in a repeating fashion. I understand it happens 1. When one speaks and another hears it in their different language. or 2. When one is given the gift of understanding a foreign language on the spot and then speaks in that language to those around him. Any other manifestation is some sort of personal projection / mass crowd participation 'hysteria', or can actually be demonic in origin [the person opens themselves to the spiritual realm without safeguards]. A far better one is at the top of the list [bible arranges them in order] i.e. Prophecy. What a gift for you to come from the Jewish background. You have the entire package ... we who are adopted into God's completed Jewish family will rarely be able to CLOSELY identify with the amazing Jewish history.
That last few minutes was great! I have many Protestant friends who i love. I so appreciate the beliefs and traditions we have in common in our churches. After all those common aspects all came from the Catholic Church. I hope and pray they find themselves drawn to the FULLNESS OF FAITH which can only be found in Catholism. It makes it hard for us who've embraced it all because we have this great treasure and want to share it. That's what those last few minutes reminded me of.
Thanks to you both for sharing your journeys. God's blessings to you both and all who listen in. ❤️🔥
My friend, that was your “Speaking-in-tongues” moment and when you said it to the Priest, he understood what you were saying. Brother, you are the “ultimate” revert/convert!!! I am like jumping with joy! I love your story. Please, everybody, let us pray for our “long lost” brothers and sisters-in Christ Catholics. I continue to pray for my daughter and son who turned to Protestantism. The NEGATIVES that they heard about Catholicism were so strong that their hearts and minds are still hardened as I tried to explain our Catholic Faith to them. It’s true what they say, it is harder “to preach” within your town/city or in your own family. Even our Lord Jesus experienced the same in Jerusalem that is why He did not do too many signs and preachings/teachings in Jerusalem, as the Bible says.
Oftentimes we are not the correct channel for change. But prayer, fasting, and suffering offered to our Lady on their behalf can motivate the Lord to act on our concerns. I suggest you start doing the 15 prayers of St. Bridget [daily done for 1 year] and found in the Pieta Prayer Book as one source. Also add the 7 prayers of St Bridget [A daily for 12 years program] . I note that the promises connected to these prayers have not been divinely authenticated through the church ... but with those promises as hopes ... I am convinced the Lord is highly motivated to grant them. I did the 15 prayer series for 7 years. The 7 prayer program have 1 & 1/2year left. Nice thing ... is the ongoing prayer commitment facilitates growth and service in other areas as well.
What a wonderful conversion story! It really made my day!
Just a fun FYI...
Jimmy Akin was also into New Age before he became Catholic!
What gives it away more: his beard or his love of aliens & scifi? 😂
This has been one of the BEST interviews EVER and has been blessing to listen to this incredible conversion.
Wow. Thank you for your kind words!
God bless and thank you both for ministering to EVERYONE!!!
Wonderful testimony! I'm considering conversion to Catholicism and exploring.
Nevertheless this testimony also shows, that Jesus is working mightily through Evangelical/Pentecostal/Protestant believers or churches.
Yes, God will work with us where we are ... Our job is to keep learning and orienting to the truth He shows us. Check out the documents referred to as 'Fathers of the Church' and also the short[ish] record and orientation in the Didache document. You will see the original church and what they were doing at the time. The 'Apostolic' Fathers are those who were the original apostles or learned directly from them. The general Fathers of the Church include the Apostolic but also go on with witness and context displays over the 1st 1000 years. Good hunting.
@@michaelpcooksey5096 Thank you. I had my first Holy Communion 3 weeks ago. The Didache and much of the Church Father's writings I was acquainted with. Blessings!
Amazing interview! Phillip is so talented and this is our first year going through Story of Civilization. God is definitely working through him. What a blessing!!
What a great laugh Phillip has!
This was a great episode. Thank you for sharing.
I watched this a little late, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you.
This is extraordinary. Thank you so much. Marcus Grodi is also very accepting of people on the journey.
And, if this is the short version, have him back.
The St. Francis of Assisi section was great!
Thank you so much for your testimony, Philip, it was wonderful! I have, and have read, your book on the Church in the Middle Ages. Keep up the great work!
What a thoroughly inspiring conversion story! New subscriber here, Godbless, Simon 🙏
Great interview!
Awesome as usual
🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏
Wow! That was beautiful❤
Thank you for watching!
Glory to Jesus Christ! What a beautiful testimony. I love this channel. It keeps reminding me of the beauty of our faith. Also it reminds me of my own conversion which sometimes I might stupidly take for granted. I could relate to a lot that was said about Pentecostalism, both good and bad.
No disrespect Cordial C but your intro reminded me of being on a plane listening to the airline pilot announcing the height speed and weather after take off
The professional approach surely takes practice to develop. I appreciate your impression and share some of it ... but love covers all right? And what Cordial is doing is nothing I've been called to do. I note the series Journey Home has a very polished style and avoids long introductions ... But the circumstances of Cordial getting this interview is certainly significant to my student mind.
When my daughter mentioned about “speaking in tongues” I told her that a true “speaking-in-tongue” activity is when a person speaks in a language different from the common language that is understood by a person or persons who know/s that language. I believe, the speaking-in-tongues (SIT) that these people say they do is NOT legitimate SIT, because I am certain, nobody among them understood what was coming our of their mouths. My daughter, unfortunately, has turned her back on her Catholic Faith and claims, she SITs. She did not say anything about my understanding of SIT. I am Filipino in heritage. I wanted to tell her then that I’d believe she has that gift if she SITs in Tagalog the Philippine national language, or in Ilokano, our regional dialect or Spanish, our “second language” which I’d lost but can still understand some. But, I did not tell her that. I continue to pray for her reversion🙏🙏🙏
There is a video out now that completely verifies your understanding. Valid SIT = 1. speaking in your common tongue but having someone else hear your words in their different tongue. 2. Being given an on the spot ability to speak in a different language and doing so. In both cases the individual speaking fully understands what they are saying. Any child babbling noise or repeating syllables is NOT legitimate SIT. It can range anywhere from demonic [person opening themselves to the spiritual realm without safeguards], to something personally induced from themselves ... and/or influenced by a group experience where others are mumbling about and one is motivated to join them in the misconception. Check out the 'Surrender Prayer Novena'. My wife and I have been doing it for some time now and it really helps us orient properly in this increasingly secular culture. God bless you and yours.
it neat how most of our conversions/ reversions are so similar to one another.
I think that's because I think in our shared humanity we are all more similar than we may think..💖
🙏❤️
Always do a good job Keith. How do you store your recordings?
He did not answer? Maybe he uploads to his website and leaves it there? I like the idea of safeguards and having a personal backup.
Duuuuude....your story is so much Luke mine, and I'm not even 15 minutes in!!!
Sola scriptura is neither historical nor biblical nor even practical, right from the beginning it always ended up with sola Martin sola sola Calvin sola Smyth sola Zwingli sola White on and on and on and on upto sola fifty thousand heretic churches by now all contradicting each other all the time rendering Christianity itself into chaotic anarchism
Yup ... but it sure can help one memorize parts of the bible ... and that can be a great thing in the long term if ongoing conversion and study becomes mainstream personal agenda.
