    NOTE: After making this video, I found that PPPoE actually is supported on Packet Tracer, it's just not supported on the router model I used. However, show commands for PPPoE are very limited on Packet Tracer. I'll leave the video as is. Back to Packet Tracer next video!
    If you want to lab PPPoE yourself in Packet Tracer and need to know how to configure the server, here's a useful link: packetlife.net/blog/2009/apr/20/configuring-pppoe/

      Yes, some router use Ethernet standard support PPPoE instead of PPP, and the others use Serial standard which support PPP. This is my opinion, I'm not sure about this

    Thanks J. Will download GNS to have a detailed workout. Much appreciated always

      Hopefully the GNS3 setup went well. It's a great resource for your studies beyond the CCNA.

    Hi, I don't know if this will get seen since it's 3 years after the video was made, but I was wondering as a newb to networking, when configuring PPP and PPPoE like this, is the point-to-point connection to the ISP and we just don't ask too many questions on how the ISP gets the data from R1 to R2, or is the point-to-point connection technically from R1 to R2 and the ISP/SPR is a medium?

    Hello Jeremy correct me if wrong using pppoe on serial link, DSL telephone and cable connection is just one of many applications where pppoe can be used right ? It can also be used over normal ethernet connection like utp or fiber. And in ccna pppoe config over telephone using DSL so I have this question

    • @JeremysITLab
      @JeremysITLab  Před 4 lety

      Yes PPPoE works over UTP and fiber connections, that's correct!

    My understanding is that the static route config can also have the dialer interface itself as the outgoing interface, rather than the ISP's address. Example: "ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 dialer 1". Is there much difference in doing so? I would suppose not, if the IP of the ISP doesn't change...but can that be expected?
    Also, since this is a PPP network, there are no broadcasts, thus no ARP requests for the IP of the ISP. Is this correct? Otherwise, it may be best practice to have the outgoing interface as the destination in a static statement, as it can possibly overload the router if the network has many other routers and hosts (due to the frequent ARP requests)?
    Thanks again for these videos! I'm on track to complete my CCNA this month :)

      Joey Woz Yes you could set set the next hop as the interface, just like with any other static route. I don’t think there is much difference. PPP doesn’t have the concept of a MAC address, so there’s no need to ARP for the Layer 2 address like in a regular Ethernet connection. Being point-to-point, there are only two hosts on the link, so there’s no need to resolve the Layer 3 address to a Layer 2 address.
