Those are very interesting especially the poetry on Subway. What strikes me as quirky about Korea is all different types of forced recycling. I'm in Michigan too and last week, I tried to be responsible and call my city to find out how to dispose fluorescent tubes. Because of the mercury. The city clerk told me to wrap them tight with plastic bag and put them out for regular collection. And I see barrels and barrels of garbage in front of every house on collection day. Recycling is one thing US needs to learn from Korea.
The light on the ground is for people who watch the smartphone.
Those people don't watch the light over the street, so they don't know the light has been changed.
If the light is on the ground, they can realize the change.

1:40 Just so you know, in Korea, food cutting scissors are only used for cutting food, not for cutting other things. I hope there's no misunderstanding. Sewing scissors, work scissors, and food scissors are used separately. And to be precise, scissors are not used to eat, but only to prepare. This is probably because Koreans don't use knives at the table.
3:04 Probably around the mid-80s, meat consumption in Korea suddenly increased, and scissors began to be used primarily in Neng-Myon(냉면) restaurants and Sam-Gyp-Sal(grilled pork belly) restaurants.
6:18 As Korea gradually developed from a poor country, people thought and behaved a lot about efficiency. (It seems like everyone became an expert in Operational Research.) Standing in line was efficient after all, and it was socially acceptable, so we stood in line like that.
7:22 As far as I know, there have been no murders in subway stations, and while the main benefit of the "screen doors" is improved safety, they have the added benefit of preventing dust and polluted air from entering the platform, and they have made the platforms so much more pleasant by blocking out all the incredible noise that trains make when they pass through.
10:28 T-money transportation cards are often linked to credit cards, so people can also pay for transportation by touching their credit card. We can also use it to pay tolls at toll gate or use vending machines at highway rest stops.
Korea certainly has come a long way. Dad being in the Korean air force our family lived in the military housing in Suwon. All the kids in the neighborhood would congregate to this one particular house to watch cartoons because there was only 1 tv in the whole neighborhood! Good memories indeed! 🙂

확실히 한국 사람들이 눈치채지 못한 것들을 외국인의 입장에서 보니 신기하군요.
횡단보도 땅에 있는 불빛은 스마트폰을 사용하는 사람들에게 신호를 알리기 위해 고안 된 장치입니다.
많은 사람들이 휴대폰을 보면서 걸어서 교통사고가 생기기 때문에 휴대폰을 보면서 신호를 확인 할 수 있게 만든 것이에요.
아까운 세금으로 돈지랄을 하는 겁니다!
지하철에 안전문이 설치된 배경에는 슬픈현실이 있었지요 교수님도 잘 알고 계시네요 늦게라도 설치를 잘 한 것 같습니다
근데 해외에도 낙하 자살 등 그런 사례는 많지만 안전문을 설치하진 않습니다.
그래도 다행인건 사회적 이슈인 사고가 생기면 빨리 개선된다는거..

감사합니다. 저도 한국인이지만 항상 많은 걸 새롭게 느끼고 한편 배우고 있습니다.
한 가지 보충하자면 버스에 줄 선 건 몇 년이 아니라 꽤 오래 되었습니다. 그리고 예전에도 차를 타기 위해 몰려 들어도 나름 차례대로 차를 탔답니다.
내가 서 있는곳이 단 하나의 노선버스만 서는곳이라면 2명이라도 줄을 서지요 하지만 수없이 많은 노선버스가 한군데 정차하는곳이라면 줄서는건 할수 없지요 아마도 버스정류장에서 줄을서지 않는곳은 후자일 가능성이 큽니다
저만의 생각일 수 있지만, 저의 줄서기에 대한 경험을 말해보겠습니다.
제가 처음으로 줄을 제대로 선다고 생각한 곳은 지하철 2호선 서울대역에서 서울대로 들어가는 버스정류장에서였습니다.
물런 그 전에도 줄서서 버스를 탄 경험이 있긴했으나,
지하철2호선 서울대역 버스정류장에서의 기억이 너무나 강렬했습니다.
당시에 그 줄서는 질서가 너무나 좋다고 생각했습니다.
그러고서 시간이 흐르면서 그 문화가 서서히 퍼저나가는 것 같았습니다.
현재는 많은 곳에서 줄 서고 있습니다.
좋은 방향으로 변화가 생겼다고 생각합니다.

For the pedestrian light, it's intended for people who are using their phones while they walk. You know, people don't usually look up when they are using their phones.
In the subway, yellow dotted solid lines are actually for blind people who use a white cane.

That light on the floor of the crosswalk, it has a function of blinking when there's not much time left. The installation rate of screen doors in the subway in Korea is 99.9%. Thank you for talking about Korea.

Interestingly, many people comment on kitchen scissor BUT many full kitchen knife sets (from all over the world) come with scissors. So maybe Korea's the only country that's really paying attention and read instructions.
한국이 가위 쓰는 게 신기하다고 하는데 해외산 주방 칼 세트 사면 가위가 포함해 있는데....그래서 어쩌면 한국만이 주방 칼 세트를 유일하게 제대로 쓰고 있는 나라 라고 생각이 드네요.
Another interesting about Korea is elevator buttons. Push once to pick the floor then push it again to cancel if you made a mistake. (So in the movie ELF, the guy could have pressed all the button one more time to cancel them...if they were in Korea)
가위보다 더 신기한 건 엘리베이터 버튼. 잘 못 누르면 한 번 더 눌러서 취소가 가능. 미국에서 한 번도 본 적 없어요. 친구들한테 말해주면 무슨 미래도시를 설명하는 거 처럼 진짜 신기해하죠.
이런 시선들도 재미있네요. 이상하지만 애정어린 시선이 고맙기도 하네요.
계절이 바뀌어감을 느낍니다. 건강하시길 빕니다.
80년대에 도시 외곽에 '가든' 이라는 이름으로 냉면과 갈비를 파는 집들이 많았습니다. 보통 갈비가 주요리고 후식으로 냉면을 먹었죠.
특히 냉면은 면이 질겨서 잘 끊어지지 않았기 때문에, 면을 비비기 전에 종업원들이 테이블로 가위를 가져와서 잘라줄지 물어보고는 미리 잘라주곤 했는데,
어느 날 부터 냉면과 함께 가위를 주고가는 집들도 생기면서 테이블 위에 가위가 놓이기 시작했습니다.
그렇게 식탁에 가위가 놓이기 시작하자 가위의 사용이 냉면에서 갈비로, 갈비와 함께 나오는 배추김치, 석박지(깍두기)를 자르는데 점차 쓰이기 시작했고,
지금은 냉면과 갈비가 아니더라도 여러 음식에서도 사용하게 된 것으로 알고 있습니다.
랭면을 제대로 먹기 위해서는 가위를 사용하지 않고 그냥 먹어야 한다는 얘기가 있더군요. 특히 어린이들에겐 면 종류(랭면, 짜짱면 등) 를 쉽게 먹이기 위해 가위로 면을 짧게 잘라내는 경우를 본 적이 잇는데 사실 면을 음미하면서 먹는 것과는 상당한 거리가 있는듯 해요....
어린시절 기억으로 김치는 손이나 젓가락으로 찟어서 먹곤 했으며 깍두기는 크게 썰어 놓으면 입으로 배어 물곤 했었습니다만 시대가 흐르고 빨리빨리 문화 때문인지 언제부터
식당에 대형 가위가 등장하게 된 듯 해요...
2023년 6~7월 필라델피아여행에서 전철을 탔는데 진짜로 티켓에 펀치로 구멍을 뚫어 확인하더군요 ㅋㅋㅋ 1950년 스타일~~~
가위를 식탁에서 사용 한지는 몇십년 않됩니다 저도 지금은 익숙하지만 처음에는 당황스러웠지만 그 편리함에 금방 익숙해 졌지요
나와 똑같네요. 네, 얼마 되었지는 아니지요.

@@TheFrogOutsidetheWell 냉면을 첨쓴것도 있긴한데 한때 음식물 재사용이 사회적 이슈가 되면서 더 확산 됬습니다. 교수님이 말씀하셨든 주방에서 컷을했었는데. 손님에게 보여주고 직접자르게하거나 손님테이블로 와서 잘라주게 되었습니다. 예를 들면 김치찜에 한포기 김치 같이요. 삼겹살도 통으로 나오기 시작했죠.
한국사람이 봐도 흥미넘치고 재미있는 영상이었네요~~~🎉🎉

말라고 했었고 그 편리함에 이상하다는 생각을 하지 않았습니다
Here In Germany traffic lights with countdown timers are nonexistent in most cities. When the traffic light turns red while you cross you are still allowed to finish crossing in normal speed, as the green light for the cars is delayed, to account for crossing time. Though this can still be an issue for disabled or elderly. Therefore a driver should still watch out if the light just turned green. Nobody should die just because of an early red light, that is totally the drivers fault. What matters is proper driver education and speed limits near crossings. I remember that some German cities tried countdowns on the red phase of traffic lights but this was abandoned because it didn't reduce the number of people jaywalking. And btw, striped pedestrian crosswalks here have no traffic lights and drivers are taught to stop when a pedestrian even approaches one. My Korean partner still doesn't share my confidence to just go onto a pedestrian crossing when a car is approaching. Nonetheless, in many regards Korean big cities are just more technologically advanced and forward thinking than we are and many of those technologies are useful, but should not be seen as the only solution to a problem. The subway screen doors ar another example of that, they don't solve suicide and murder. Here in Germany accidents at railway stations are incredibly rare, would be interesting to see some statistics. But normal people don't care about statistics but about "perceived danger", which the screen doors help with, and I see how they increase inner comfort for many and this matters too.

80년대 중반쯤부터 냉면/삼겹살 등의 고기나 면류를 취급하는 대중음식점 주방에서 가위를 쓰기 시작했던 걸로 기억합니다. 1978년에 육류파동으로 대일 수출이 완전히 중단되면서 그 수출 물량이 내수로 풀려 80년대에 본격적으로 삼겹살이 대중화의 길을 걷게 되면서 칼로 잘라서 굽다가 구워서 가위로 자르는 식으로 진화(?)한 게 아닌가 싶네요.

Scissors in the kitchen are quite normal for chefs, even in the western world. Koreans aren't eating with the scissors. We only use it to cut/slice the food. It's no different than slicing steak with a knife.

스마트폰을 보면서 걷는 스몸비(스마트폰과 좀비 합성어)족이 늘며 교통사고를 당하는 일이 빈번하게 일어나자 바닥에 신호등을 설치하여 스마트폰을 보면서도 신호를 알수 있도록 한겁니다.
