      It was built all with closed cells, the layout of the cells were quite thought out and there seemed to be no great risk of the terminals shorting out. I wouldn't call it safer than a regular lead-acid battery, but it's fine.
      I am a bit sceptical about it being able to handle the alternators' charging current, though...

      @choppergirl Před 6 měsíci +11

      He made it with 27000 or 18650 Lipo / Liion cells, among other things, so it probably worked much better than a Lead Acid battery. However (!), the car alternator is not designed to charge those... probably over charged them, and ruined them. Lipo and Liion cells prefer to sit at 50% of their max storage voltage, not 100% (like a Lead Acid battery). Also, it was probably an explosion hazzard as again, the Alternator probably did not stop charging them when it needed to.

    • @BlondieSL
      @BlondieSL Před 6 měsíci +2

      @@choppergirl Yes... the alternator can charge a lithium bank... BUT.. the battery bank MUST have the proper charge controller built in.
      When you buy a proper replacement battery that is Lithium and it has the form factor of the usual car battery, it has the controller built in. Nothing has to be done to the alternator. The controller (a good one) would take care of the charging current, charging time and max voltage for the cells being used.
      What this guy had was horrible. He's lucky that the thing didn't burst into flames like some EVs do.
      And those other cells (or super caps) were NOT added correctly to the system.
      And the plastic box.. .OMG.
      If he wanted to do this right, he should have taken his old, original battery, get it drained properly, cut the top off below the rim, remove all the cells inside... super clean and then use that to build his bank.... but build it properly. Then, reattach the top with a rim retainer piece.

    • @choppergirl
      @choppergirl Před 6 měsíci +3

      @@BlondieSL Well, hydrochloric acid is kind of dangerous so I can't suggest gutting a used battery just to reuse the outer plastic casing.
      To have a same form factor battery case he could of bought a battery without the acid installed yet, but then, might as well run with that instead. To disassemble it would be messing with lead. Really, any plastic case would do of the right shape off a Walmart storage container aisle.
      I think he was in a pinch and had already invested in Lipos, knew they had a higher density, and tried to rig up something expedient and experimental in a pencil case box. Some check car jump start units use these lipos with a contained charge controller which is probably where he got the idea.
      Agreed about the charge controller.
      Really, a lot of people do a lot more dangerous things than having them under a car hood... with Lipos and Liions... like wearing them on their head in VR units, or in their pocket in smart phones.

      @BlondieSL Před 6 měsíci +1

      Most people wouldn't know how to properly drain and dispose of acid.
      I didn't even think about buying a battery without the acid in it yet. That's actually brilliant.
      You are also right about some people under the hood of a car. Not just batteries, but many things. There are some videos out there of people who have done things that they should not have done, under the hood and under the car... that... well... are beyond cringe.

    • @choppergirl
      @choppergirl Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@BlondieSL The proper way to dispose of acid is to mix it with high fructose corn syrup and carmel color, then shake it up and carbonate it under pressure in a plastic bottle.

Which is great because, what a lot of people don't realize, is that when the battery on your power tools starts to not charge or charge quickly and only last a few minutes, it's usually a cell or two that are done for. Super easy to replace them.
      I have a bunch of Porter Cable power tools, that I love and a couple of years ago, I bought a used set off of a guy. He sold it with several batteries because some of the batteries were "bad". LOL silly contractor.
      I opened up the 2 bad batteries, found which cells were bad, replaced them with some I had on hand, balanced them and WHALA! They've been working perfectly since then.

A torch would be ridiculous for a few reasons. Unless the vehicle is in the middle of nowhere between the light from the torch and the spark show it would put on would bring unwanted attention to you. And have you ever grabbed a piece of metal that was torched off right after it was? No and neither has anyone else without welding gloves or the equivalent protection. And do you realize how hard it would be to get away quickly with a set of cutting torches? Bro you didn't think this one through before you commented!

Not to mention it'll fail to work in cold temperatures. 10:08 - My mother had one of these before she got her keyless Mercedes.. She though it looked really pretty and bought one, installed it herself and tried to start the car the next day.. didn't work.. I knew it was something with that stupid ring, so I yanked it off.. Car starts.. I put it back on, car doesn't start.. What I think is happening is that it's causing some kind of short. Maybe that's blocking current or something like that.. Heck I think these things even got on the news once telling people not to buy them.

      It's magnetic. The magnets interfere with the RFID signal.

      They just break the connection between the transponder in the key head and the immobiliser sensor in the slip ring. They're just too far apart to talk to each other.

    As a mechanic myself, this is on par with a horror movie compilation.

    The swaybar bushing hack: it's not stupid if it works!
    Might even do this on my own project car while I wait for my new (upgraded) swaybar, bushings and mounts to arrive. It'd at least get rid of the *KA-THUNK* sound the loose bushings cause while decelerating...
